Hello Tim Houses in the Philippines get cracks in the cement all the time. These cracks typically due to drying shrinkage because of the weather nothing to do with the workmanship and material. Cracks may be repaired by using a low-pressure injection of an epoxy or polyurethane foam material. or chip to widen the crack half an inch and refill it and this time add epoxy to the cement, it will be completely dry in as little as an hour. The dirty kitchen is an excellent addition, a good thinking. Now you want to spend on adding a strong room too. You have enough space to build a bedroom instead, and it will cost little more, all you have to do is open a new door to it next to your refrigerator. And with that, you will not think of moving to a bigger place after all. Just a friendly idea take or leave it. Good luck and enjoy your life in the Philippines, regards!

Yeah, in the video I said that even the big new convention center had the cracks. At the convention center they covered up the cracks and it is ok now. It is just the way of things here. 😀

Tito Tim Hi Tim our house same size like yours there. I have not seen any cracks but due to monsoon rains and heat it did damage the ceilings. I have a 15 yr old house in Chicago, I late just saw some cracks too. I have it checked and the guy said it's the paint, nothing to worry. Just paint it again. Yours may need another layer of cement to fix the problem. My brother bought a house in a subdivision there and yes workmanship no good. They save the cement to cut the price and they were in a hurry. You have a nice simple house by the way.

For a man with the Scout movement heart and soul, with an active imagination, with a low budget, or who did not settle yet on where to live for a long period of time at the same place, it's a better choice for him to build a house entirely from bamboo. For older folks, they need their comfort zone with the AC, security and especially if they are convinced that they found the right place where they will rest and spend their life there and with goog financial sources, they rather use cement and brick to build that house. Regards!

The hollow blocks here are absolute garbage. I miss good building materials, like we got in the US (but I do not miss US prices ha ha). 😀
@antoinefigafetta64056 жыл бұрын
the hollow blocks didn't cracked nor it is sub standard, the cracks on the wall is superficial , it is the grout ( topping ) used to finish the hollow blocks that cracked , 2 reasons for cracking either the topping is too thin or shrinkage due to temperature nevertheless it's still structurally sound , how to fix ? just chip the top surface where the cracks are and finish is again. :-))

She has talked about the store room for a while but the dirty kitchen is a relatively new idea... but a good idea. The house is pretty small, but we built in on free land, so we only had so much room ha ha. It works well for the 2 of us.

Use skim coat on the cracks, not cement. Won't stick to your paint. Skim coat is cheap and designed to reduce cement cracks.

The hollow blocks did not crack but can be crumbled my hand - because they are substandard. The coating on the walls also cracked because they were substandard. Normal for here... but substandard. We are getting it patched, but if the cement was properly mixed and applied it would not be necessary. 😀🍹🇵🇭

Looks good Tim. Just shows you don't have to spend a fortune to build in the Philippines. Most important is that you are happy with it. As long as it serves your needs, that's good enough.
@TitoTimTravels7 жыл бұрын
It is good, for now. I could see me wanting something bigger later... maybe an apartment in a tower downtown 😀
@graeme027 жыл бұрын
Seems like it's worked out at roughly 15k (php) per month over the last two years... Add another year and the price goes down to around 10k p/m.... Not too shabby considering you'd have paid about that much in rent by now huh. Good choice to build Tim, it makes perfect sense given your circumstances.
@TitoTimTravels7 жыл бұрын
In the city we paid p6,500 a month. So I figure in 3 1/2 years it pays for itself in rent savings. And she will at least have a house when I die (I am not in a hurry ha ha)

I'm sure that the cheap hollow block everyone uses there is why so many cracks happen. I'm looking at building a house up on luzon in the batangas area and I'm going to check on the better block. The thing is you have to be there every day to make sure that there aren't any cheap materials used.
@TitoTimTravels5 жыл бұрын
Some expats buy the machine to make their own blocks. This house was too small & cheap to worry about that too much.

Tito Tim, if you can rebuild your house once again. What are some of the changes you'll gonna make? A dirty kitchen is must in the Philippines. Ha! we should hire you as a supervisor when we build our house in the future. hehehe! I do loved your tiny house.
@TitoTimTravels7 жыл бұрын
The only change I can think of is to make the kitchen a little bigger. When she asked for a back door - I lost 50% of my planned counter and cabinet space. Other than that, I am happy enough with it. 😀

Not a bad price Remember seeing some of the old vids when u was having it built. It seems lot of houses there get cracks in the cement like that from either poor materials and most likely dont think they put a skim coat on the cement block before they put on cement layer. That would have prevented it. Shouldnt be to hard to repair though.. Anyways look forward to future vids
@TitoTimTravels7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, here materials are iffy and workmanship is not much better... but it works well enough. I am pretty happy that the small cracks are the only problem in 2 years. 😀

Wow, I just saw this last update. Your house has grown significantly by adding that covered patio in the front, and soon a dirty kitchen too, as I understand. Cracks are not a problem I suppose, see them everywhere here. Just get them fixed as you said, and I guess that will settle the issue for most.
@TitoTimTravels6 жыл бұрын
All I asked for was a covered patio in the front. I meant like 4 poles and a 8 or 10 foot nipa roof. They built that whole room pretty cheap. I sure like it. The dirty kitchen turned out very well, indeed. They go a long way to make it more comfortable. We built small because it was cheap, and not on our land (uncle's). I am happy with it for now, may or may not move after i actually retire. 😀
@gooblio6 жыл бұрын
If they put a footing in the cracking wouldn't be as bad. The walls they only cemented ? They didn't plaster over the cement, it gives a much nicer finish on the walls. It looked like they did a little plaster work after the first coat of yellow and you said it looked blotchy, that was from plastering. The plaster is white and I'm sure I seen them fix some of the cement work with it after painting.
@makeitpay82415 жыл бұрын
i think you are correct. a good footing would have been cheep insurance against cracking but getting them to do something different from what is normal for them is going to be a tough run.

@@TitoTimTravels I Also noticed that all the houses being built are of block (C.M.U.) and not framed walls of 2x4 or 2x6, and all the roofs are of Tin and not asphalt shingles, I'm guessing because of the termites ? or that the house is stronger in the weather that they have ? I can understand the tin roof If it's done right because the shingles would rip right off in a good storm, Could you enlighten me with some answers ? Thank You, Al
