@@mcgoombsexactly. Get one only if you truly want one. They are a huge responsibility. If you can't take them with you, sometimes you have to get a sitter, if you can find and trust one. That has been the biggest frustration for me in the past. Along with the high prices of vet bills and medication costs when they are sick.

I spent my young years (1950s, early '60s) in a logging camp on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island (BC, Canada) at Menzies Bay. Access was by water, only. My Grandad ran the tug boat for Mac-Blo, the logging company who had several logging leases - but his real skill lay in the direction of woodworking. He built EVERYthing - including four little beds for me, my younger sister and our two cousins - and those beds were so well and sturdily-made - that they lasted for at least four generations of children that I know of. He was one of those men, who - if he had a plot of land and a forest from which to cull wood - he could build you a house from the ground up - and that included all the insulation, plumbing, electrical, etc. He was a FANATIC about "safety" - most especially fire safety - because everything was wood. Our stove for cooking and baking and drying the laundry - was a humongous old cast-iron sawdust burner - and our "heater" was a cast-iron Benjamin Franklin stove in the living-room. I remember my dad spending countless hours in his off-time from the log boom - splitting wood (especially kindling) . . . cut off his thumb, once. "I" learned to split wood before I even started school. But any time we installed a new stove - down would go the fire retardant stuff . . . a roll of it begun on the floor UNDER the stove - followed by a fire-retardant board, then four bricks to elevate the stove even farther from the floor. Then that roll of "whatever-it-was" would be continued to the wall behind the stove, up the wall (projecting about a foot on either side of the stove) - and up onto the ceiling. A hole would be measured and cut into the wall for the stove-pipe - and IT would also be lined with a double layer of that roll of stuff . . . and Grandad would lead all the men every year in cleaning the chimneys of all the houses in the camp. Grandad was also an excellent hunter and fisher. We ate a LOT of venison (my fave, to this day), and a lot of fish, crabs, clams, etc. When it became clear that my Grandad wasn't going to get any grandsons to pass on his skills to - he began to teach me - the oldest of his granddaughters, how to use his wood-working tools: the planers, brace & bit, vice, saws, axes, etc. - and how to keep everything sharp and in good repair. To this day - I LOVE the smell of wood - and things crafted by hand. And I love watching folks who have these skills. To quote my lascivious old swimming coach (a middle-aged woman) - "There is nothing sexier than a competent man." Those skills have been passed down through the generations, too. My brother AND my son (the only boy in his generation of the family) - are both really "handy" people. And they are both excellent cooks, as well. My son can not only re-wire a house to accommodate a modern entertainment centre set-up - but also has all the teeny-tiny tools for fixing watches - and "regular" tools for fixing cars. He saw me installing crown molding in an apartment we once lived in - and build and paint bookshelves - and little by little - he acquired a set of these "handy" skills, himself. Needless to say - I'm loving these videos. I am really getting a tickle out of the "kraal" fence that is being built around the house. Given the proximity of bears and wild boars - I'm going to assume there are also other large predators - lynx, bobcats, cougars, etc. - so such a fence is a good idea. Watching this video has made this old lady smile from many memories of a childhood spent in the wilderness. Thank you.

Super nice video, you're such a skilled man. I'm so amazed and impressed to your abilities. What I want you to add is to have you a lavatory so that when rain comes you don't need to go to the stream. This may put you convenient in all aspects coz whenever you preparing you're food of course you need to wash those ingredients, those dishes cutlery glasses and so others used in your cooking. of course you need to include water container.

I’m curious to know what it’s called so I can find one for myself. Thanks! 🎩😊
