I think people under estimate the overall difficulty of such a task that this man accomplished. The strength, the accuracy, time management (seasons, weather, daylight), the mental aspect (being secluded, wild animals, not close to healthcare, absent from family), oh and documenting all of it, editing and everything else that I missed. My hats off to Shawn. “My self Reliance” I couldn’t thin of a better title. Happy New Year!

Dear Sir, I’m a 54 year old man; paralyzed from my waist down, and bedridden since October 2021, from a severe illness I’m still fighting and not quitting. I’d just want you to know, just how much I appreciate your video, of your, “Self Reliance,” and tell you how much you’ve helped me me cope through being alone, and bedridden these 2 1/2 plus years. You’re truly an amazing man, and your videos have provided me a mental outlet, a vacation of sorts. Don’t want to ramble on too much, just say, “Thank you.” I hope you are doing well. Take care.

My Daddy built the house I grew up in, and there aren't many men like him and you left in the world--you're the true heroes! He passed away in September, and my life will never be the same. Several years ago, Daddy and I picked out a spot on our land for a cabin, but for now, I just have to enjoy others building them--this one is spectacular!

I make no judgement in what caused this persons renal failure. At the age of 60, I was disgusted with my health and realized if I didn’t change my diet, I would face a disease ridden senior life. I changed my diet to LOW CARB…in 10 months, I lost 50 lbs, got off 7 medications and had the best blood test results ever. I eat one 2k-2.5k calorie meal a day between 4-8pm. I fast 20 hours per day and I walk 8 miles every other day. I still follow this way of eating and exercise.

@@madd5 Average home price in the US is 428k, the average yearly salary is $54k. Average home price in the US in 1970 was 24k, Average salary was $6100. So it costs 8 full average salaries to buy a home today. In 1970 it only cost 4 and a lot of the homes being purchased today are the same homes that were being purchased in 1970. Average cost of a private college education in the US today is $36k, in 1970 it was $1800. 2/3 the average salary today. A bit over 1/4 the average salary in 1970. Average renters in 1970 paid a little over a 1/4 of their monthly income on rent. Today Average renters pay nearly 1/2 of their earnings on rent. Average Salaries for college grads is even more stark. In 1970 it was 10k. Today it is 55k. An average home today costs 8 full college grad yearly salaries. In 1970 it only cost 2 1/2. There is a reason "Children" today feel that capitalism (at least todays current corrupt corporatist version of capitalism) has failed them.

@@madd5 OMG another child who thinks anyone criticizing the current system must be a communist. Believe it or not, back in the 40s and 50s, when a whole family of four, a dog and cat, with a two car garage in the suburbs, etc, could be comfortably maintained on _one person's very average nine to five job,_ that was still capitalism. Countries that have free university education, universal healthcare, _those countries are capitalist systems too._ The choices are not only "suffer under the current *incredibly unbalanced* system" or "turn into China" you know. There are an infinite number of ways to improve people's lives within a capitalist system that we are not doing -- mainly because people have been told to believe that any improvement is socialism and bad for... some reason they don't understand and can't explain.

Many Men have the financial ability to support such an undertaking yet lack the skills ,stamina ,mental and physical ability while many men only lack the financial ability to achieve such a task. A task such as this takes so much more than what is being shown. Success must first be achieved in society in order to be able to fund such an undertaking. Hats off to you for such a very hard journey and work in order to even be able to start a project like this. I sure hope someone who receives this one day understands what it took to happen. One doesn't simply trot of into the wilderness ,drop some trees and build a cabin ....years, n years of hard work long before the first tree was ever felled 👍💯

We have a tendency to forget things with times. Seeing the two years in fast motion is a reminder of all the work you did to get to what it is now and you did not even mention the greenhouse and garden and all the other stuff you did. Great work, for a man alone, you put a heck of a performance. Happy New year.

I've been watching Sean James since he laid the first log for his first cabin. I also have a passion for this type of work I'm just too old to do it but it's incredibly inspiring to actually see the strength and work ethic he has.

Happy New Year Shawn, as we say Goodbye to 2022 and Welcome 2023 you have a lot to be proud of mainly being able to replicate Dick Proenneke in his move to Alaska in his 50's - he lived almost another life in the wilderness. Wishing you and your family the best for 2023!!

I am quite amazed by the work you are doing. Now I am not a tecnical guy but having worked in a construction company for a few years I am quite sure that none of those workers I know could build a house like this on their own especially with those limited tecnical tools. My sincere respect! By watching all you videos I feel myself very relaxed. One special thought was coming to my mind: Back to the nature…back to our roots. Thanks so much for sharing with us such beautiful and harmonouse moments like these. Please take care. All the best to you and your family which includes also your dog. Greetings from Norway️️️

Enormously inspiring! I have been away for a while. I found out through a friend that, “you have done it again,” and I must say it is even better the second time. I am in a process myself of “having to do it again” (not a cabin), and your example is inspiring like nothing else. Thank you!

I've been watching for several years, it's amazing!! Such a lost talent, a lost art, all of this used to be common place for men. More men today should know how to do these things!! I hope more young men will be inspired & try doing a smaller version!! Hard work is gratifying especially building something with your own 2 hands & the satisfaction that comes from it!!

This is different from the previous. Behind everything is a reason. As I can see you learned a lot from the previous house built. And into this house you put all of your skill and knowledge. This is not a house this is a home :). God bless you sir! You are a role model for lot of us!

I know that your interest in woodworking started at a very young age. But I have to wonder if you realize how truly unique & skilled you are. Thank you for the hours of beautiful & interesting videos. You are an outstanding human being Shawn James. Happy New Year to you Callie & your lovely family from Indiana, USA.

This man knows what he is doing ! It impresses me to no end to see the determination , no time wasted here ! Its mind boggling to see so many individuals pushing shopping carts around the city and begging for whatever , then you see someone like this , independent, determined , focused and asking nothing of anyone ! This man is not wasting time on this earth doing nothing ! he is using his head and muscle like the lord designed him to do ! God bless you sir and god bless your family !

I have also been inspired by Shawn. My wife and I moved up north not that far from Shawn's homestead. I have a smaller house with only 6 acres. We are starting the next period of our lives. Greenhouse is on order and looking to add some sort of supplementary power system. Thank you Shawn. Happy New Year

I must say how impressed that I am. My shoulders ache watching this, but I know how rewarding it feels when structures come to fruition. You really know your stuff.. with brace and bit, no less. I've designed (drawn on paper) things and built them by hand, and know how much work it can be.

This longer version is better than the more condensed one. I said you did a great job of editing out the gristle to leave just meat. I see now that you left a lot of meat on the cutting room floor to get this down to that short version. Really a delightful way to spend my Saturday morning, thank you.

He did a great job the house was in his vision, but he didn't do it all alone! Cause when he was working on the side covered porch, i was seeing him lift the window up and hearing some hammering in the back somewhere.

Shawn, what can I say ? You're THE MAN ! You literally built this incredibly spacious and high quality cabin all by yourself (Including working straight through the Winter months). This is a lasting personal accomplishment and provision for your family. When you're old, and sitting in your rocking chair by the fire, then you can look around at all you survey and be satisfied in the work of hour hands. You are a focused and determined craftsman. This is a very inspiring feat, and it is no small thing you have done, Sir ! I salute you. 👌👍😃
