House Wren Attacks Baby Bluebirds

This house wren attacked bluebird nestlings by grabbing them and throwing out of the nestbox when the parents were away. Birds are not cruel nor kind.. they are simply birds surviving. Consider where you place your bird houses, wrens like to be near tree lines and stuff bird houses near their own to remove competition. Consider placing your bluebird boxes well away from tree/forest lines, favoring a more open area, say along a fence line. Box placement can make a huge difference where survival is concerned. Glad they were rescued, but then the wren may return!

Thank you for saving the babies. I would try putting up other types of nest boxes. Wren numbers have exploded from people offering nest boxes.

this is nature at work wrens will kill off the young of other birds to take out competition, and even steal feathers from the nests of other birds for there own....its kinda like an extreme soccer mom killing the kids on the other team so hers will win the game than carjacking the mom of the kid she killed

Had something similar like this happen to one of my birdhouses. Had 5 little newbies bluebird chicks. I found them dead below the birdhouse. Come to find out a house wren had moved into on of my other birdhouses and had chicks of its own. They are mean little buggers.

This is SO horrible to watch, those poor precious babies! :( Anyway it's good to watch this so that you can take the appropriate action if wrens are a threat in your area. Wren guards are a great help as well as making sure the nest isn't near bushes or shrubs. Even still, wrens can still attack as we've seen here and it's just so extremely horrible! :( Thank God these precious babies made it! What a great landlord keeping such a great eye out for it and saving them! :) Thanks for sharing! :)

One was still in the nest......but for how long? We will never know. How sad to see the others being thrown to the ground and dying immediately but this is nature.

This is happening to me right now. I have two nest boxes and there is house wrens and blue birds competing for the SAME nest box. :( The wren came back and threw all the straw out and started bringing sticks. I'm pretty sure that neither have laid eggs yet, but I bet they probably will not survive.

I've seen strong evidence of Wrens killing babies at two nests I was photographing and filming. Didn't eat them, just pecked them to death. I think it's more about territory and reducing competition for them. Sad, though. Check out some predation attempts on my channel! Cheers, Damon

I've never heard or seen this behavior in wrens. They're not a bird eater. They eat insects, nuts, mealworms, peanut butter and suet. Wonder why it did that. Wonder if it was stealing it's babies bc something happened to it's babies maybe. My Southern Carolina Wrens has a nest inside an old tire and I've seen birds close by and our dog but not one fight any of the birds away. She doesn't really fly off when I'm around. I've been watching her nest for a week bc our snakes, Crow's, and blue jays is getting nest left and right eating babies and eggs.

This is terrible but I love my house Wrens. These birds take no shit and have a great song. I have seen them attack sparrows, chipmunks, squirrels, and even a robin sized wood pecker. They just want to protect their nest and young. Yesterday I seen them causing a fuss near a robin's nest.
