Dang me I love this channel. When I was a youngster I would gather baby birds from an old oak tree in our cul de sac that were lucky enough to fall onto a lawn instead of the hard roadway. I raised them with paper clip-tweezers and a bread and milk mixture until they fledged. Dad took super 8's of me walking outside as a dozen birds would fly from the trees and land on me! Still love them, watch them no matter where I am and have been involved in cleaning up oiled birds for years. Love this channel, looking forward to more adventures!

What a labor of love this is! I've hand raised birds - robin, sparrow, dove... its a HUGE task. Feeding every 20 mins. When people say "you eat like a bird" and mean 'little' how wrong they are! Birds eat half their body weight daily, and have a high metabolic rate. You don't realize how few bugs there are in the world due to birds devouring them in quantity. Some pointers: Try feeding mealworms - you can cut them in half. Use rounded forceps - the medical grade kind you find on Amazon. The kind that is also used for pulling hair out of dog's ears. They don't have pokey tips. You need to push that food down into the 'landing pad' back of the throat. Just far enough that the bird will swallow on its own but not so far that you mistake windpipe for gullet. A variety of worms will work well. They have their preferences as you will find out. Buy fresh worms not dried. These are super nutritious. Baby bird mash is sold for two groups of birds: Passerines (Finch type) and Psittacines (Parrot type). Psittacines are Non-Passerines. More than half of bird species are Passerines. You can recognize a Passerine bird by its 4 toes - 3 in front, and 1 in the back. This formation is for perching. Most backyard birds on feeders are passerines with the exception of the dove. Sparrows, wrens, finches, cowbirds, Junco - are all passerines. Some passerines are seed eaters (thick beak to crack seeds) and some are insect eaters like robins with pointy beaks for pulling out worms. With baby bird Passerine mash, you make little balls with some water and finger or forcep feed them. This ensures calcium, minerals, protein, and a balanced diet along with worms, and is far less cumbersome than hunting for worms. If you buy fresh mealworms, keep them in your fridge and mist them periodically, and give them some flaxseed meal to eat and other stuff. Don't keep them too long they get too big to eat so buy in small quantities. Make sure your mealworms are eating well so they impart their nutrition to the bird. If you have to drive around for errands, and its not winter, take birdie with you in a small cage, with some mealworms in an insulated lunch tote along with a frozen gel pack to keep it cool. Feed on the go. Watch for Avian pox nodules on your bird. This is the bird version of small pox. It is not transmissible to humans. My baby sparrow had it really bad, which is why she was pushed out of the nest by mom, so she would not infect the other babies. Giant nodules all over her body, beak, eyes. I punctured and drained them, and put some Betadine (generic: Povidone iodine) on wounds, and let them heal. Most don't survive, but she pulled through due to 24/7 care. If bird has a big gash, as my sparrow did, don't stitch it up! There is too little skin to work with and vets are useless here. Wash it out with Betadine, and 'glue' the skin segments up with 'VetBond' glue. This is made for skin. I would leave two small openings on either side, for pus to drain out till it heals up naturally. Soak with warm water + Epsom salts + Betadine 3xday to draw out pus for a couple of days. Then just Betadine + Neosporin. Sometimes Neosporin Opthalmic drops works better than the vaseline cream version if you need antibiotics to penetrate a deep hole or gash. It is miraculous how quickly wounds will heal with early attention and care and good food! I had successes with eagles, sparrows, pigeons, doves, and even boa constrictors among others. Thank you for your compassion and hard work. Its very reassuring to see unselfish, kind, animal lovers exist and do so much good for animals. What a story this little wren has to tell! Such an adorable little fella with that bald head and fluffs of down!

Do you have to wake up in the middle of the night to feed them? If so, whats it like waking up every 20 minutes?
@lass-inangeles75644 жыл бұрын
@@cloudthesheep No, thankfully, you get to sleep at night! But you had better rise early. Fortunately, birds sleep early too. Its just the daytime from sun up to sun down. Its hard but very rewarding. A human child is more work.

I hope he tries that whissle this winter. Wrens are home bound, and have a tendency to get attached to their cohabitants. I have a wren in my yard, and it comes to get me when there's a cat in the yard during nesting season. It calms down when I release my dogs (who in turn chase off the cat). Wrens are the coolest birds and they have wonderful songs too... So there's a big chance if he whissles, the wren will come check out if there's food :)

Luckly, he was unharmed and after 15 days of pure joy, he took flight and hopefully started a new life! My friend had done what she could to "train" the bird to eat on it's own and find food. Who knows if hes still out there! Again, thank you for giving the bird a chance at life. We were so proud!
