Honestly, your performance here is so touching, sensitive and pure. And the syncoped melody sounds like a sensitive fragment of something that is finding it's place between all that "traffic", like the characters do in the show. Thank you so much :)

Wow. That was really great. I really liked that hint of the main theme at the start and would love to see you cover other pieces from this anime's excellent OST. Shinsha's theme is my personal favourite. If you could capture the haunting sound of the erhu from that song entirely on piano then I would be truely blown away. However, even if you don't make any more Houseki No Kuni covers, I'm still looking forward to other future videos :)
@Caliko6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! I *really* want to cover some more pieces from the Houseki OST, and since a lot of them are based on fairly simple melodies it seems like they'd sound great on piano, it'll probably take a while though (since I don't always have access to the grand). And I've actually already transcribed Shinsha's theme, it's one of my favorites too!

Thank you for sharing your music, you are amazing! I started 3 years ago to play the piano but I am still not where I want to be. Do you have a nr. tip in praxticing? thank you! I bought the Czerny Etudes, I hope they help me to advance :) Keep going! Btw nice Bösendorfer :)
@Caliko6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! My tip for practicing is to always go for things you can't yet play. Go for challenging pieces that you *want* to play, and don't get discouraged if you can't nail some part of it right away! Learn to love practice itself. And another thing - it's okay to drop something you wanted to play but got frustrated with. That's happened to me *a lot* lol, I got tired of a piece because it was too challenging technically, dropped it, and then came back to it a year or two later. Guess what? Most of the time it turned out I've progressed somewhere along the way, and could suddenly play the parts that were impossible for me before. Czerny Etudes are a good technical exercise for sure! Though I've always preferred to learn while playing stuff I wanted to play :) Good luck with your playing!

Probably one of the best anime from last year. How do you teach the piano to yourself btw?
@Caliko6 жыл бұрын
Agreed! And I've had a teacher until I was 12 so I've been taught the basics, now I just find sheet music for whatever I want to play and go by that! If you're asking how you'd teach yourself to play ~in general~ (that was a bit unclear) I'm probably not the best person to ask since I'm not entirely self-taught. Probably start by learning how to read sheet music, that'd speed things up in the future.
@kingdel0xe6 жыл бұрын
Well I had a teacher for about 3-4 years when I was about 7 but I stopped playing because she forced me to play pieces I didn't want to play and I couldn't read sheet music even after all these years. After this 'horrific' experience I never touched a piano for about 11 years. However, at some day I watched some videos of Animenz, TheIshter [I discovered you later :)] and wanted to play again, so I taught myself how to read sheet music - more or less haha - and played whatever I wanted to play. Soon enough I noticed that some pieces are pretty hard and my progress seemed so slow I lost some motivation. Now I'm taking it serious again and I try to learn the piano for real, I still have some problems though. Firstly, I think I memorise music 'wrong' since I use mainly 'muscle memory' because I still can't read sheet music fluently. Secondly, I have some problems with playing a piece perfectly since slip off keys far too often when I try to play faster pieces.. Sorry for the wall of text :)
@Caliko6 жыл бұрын
I was in a similar spot with having teachers slowly 'kill' my love for playing, though I only stopped playing for 3 years when I started again on my own. Learning by muscle memory isn't wrong at all! Being able to read sheet music instantly is a skill that takes yeaaaars to develop, I've always struggled with that too. Once I started playing again after my break I took about 3 months to learn a fairly simple piece, I was really horrible at reading sheets and... honestly I'm still not too good at it! I've gotten better, sure, but progress in that regard comes very slowly. I'd even go as far as to say that you *need* to base your playing on muscle memory at first, getting comfortable with new techniques comes with time. If you're losing motivation because of difficult pieces don't be afraid to drop them and try something else. Choose some pieces that use easier techniques, then gradually try the harder ones. For you to get a better picture - I've been practicing Animenz's Unravel since it came out over 3 years ago, and I'm just now slowly getting to the point where I've mastered it :) I have a ton of pieces like that, where I spend months or years on them - that's my way of progressing. In regard to 'slipping off keys', the one solution is to play slower. It just means your fingers haven't memorized a piece properly yet and you need to practice very slowly and accurately, then pick up the pace bit by bit. I'm not sure if this will be of any help, but I figured the only way to reply to a wall of text is with a wall of text!
@kingdel0xe6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, it helped me a lot, especially seeing that I'm not the only one struggling with playing the piano at some time even though your struggle with Animenz's Unravel only proves that you are only human after all hehe :) Personally, I have the most trouble with reading the rhythm when it comes to reading sheet music (I'm slow at reading sheet music in general but at least I get the notes right after some time). Anyways, you gave me hope that I will get better some day (: Lately I 'finished' playing ThePandaThooth's Princess Mononoke Medley after about half a year of learning (I had to take some breaks because I don't always have access to a piano) but I'm far from mastering it. The thing is, I always fall in love with pieces I'm barely able to play, so I have to search for easier pieces or stick with them for ever which sort of kills the motivation sometimes. I keep practising nontheless :)
@Caliko6 жыл бұрын
I know the struggle of falling in love with pieces I'm barely able to play :') Those are the ones that make you progress the most though! I can assure you that it'll get easier with time, reading rythms and all - you'll just have to keep playing. Good luck!
