I like to think that Kutner wasn't depressed so much as bored or accident prone. In the episode 'Mirror Mirror' the mirror man says as Kutner that he _needs_ new experiences, not just likes them, even if theyre painful. Having a gun may have been for kicks, the way House would have one, and he may have died accidentally or even on a whim. He'd shown a recklessness with his own safety before, when he electrocuted himself trying to save a patient, however he was genuinely scared of the 'death cat' in the episode 'Here Kitty'.

He also played the role of Eddie in Rocky Horror Picture Show!
