This seems to be the year where thrips just decided to attack my Monstera’s. In this video I share and give you all a houseplant update on my battle with thrips. Everything from how I discovered them, what thrips damage looks like, how to treat them using insecticide, lady buys and ultimately pruning and propagation to save a severely damaged Monstera from thrips, which is exactly where my Monstera Deliciosa from Walmart ended. Dealing with common house plant pest is never fun and often times frustrating, but as a committed plant parent, we have to deal with it and it’s just part of the process. Hopefully you found this video helpful and please don’t forget to give it a thumbs up and subscribe.

Great video Christian, so sorry that your Monstera got thrips, so far I have been lucky and haven't had to deal with any pests except for those stupid fungus gnats, but those I got under control as well. Good luck and keep us up to date on her progress in healing, both the Monstera and the Thai Constelation.

My raphidophora has Thrips, and i never knew what the signs were, until it began developing small dark circles under it's leaf. and my friend who is an aroid professional told me to look into it's soil and if i saw small thin insects crawling, i would need to spray it down with insecticide, and OR change it out of it's soil. thank you for this video.

Hmm, I've got a very similar story with my monstera. Weak, droopy leaves, halted growth, unexpected brown patches, first thought it was a lighting/rootbound issue, repotted, no improvement so far. I've dealt with thrips before so I inspected the heck out of that plant and didn't find any, but I'm wondering if I somehow still missed them because the symptoms are SO similar. Thank you for the video - I'll check my plant again when I get home!

I’ve just gone through this heartbreaking process over six weeks of trying everything including navigating the soil with an em fertilizer, reputing and washing the roots, using statistics, lint rollers, washing the leaves every two days, cutting back all the infected leaves and then all the new ones got infected. And now I’ve had to take everything off the mother plant. It’s heartbreaking after all the energy and love you put in your babies but Thrips seem to be the plant world’s equivalent of cockroaches. you just can’t get rid of them

The only thing that worked for me against thrips was trimming and Neem oil, they were on every rose bush I have. They are hard to detect and it’s often too late. Neem oil takes time to work though, it doesn’t kill on contact. What it does is makes the bugs sick when they eat it and they slowly die of starvation, it disrupts their life cycle. Another advantage of this oil is that it only kills the bugs that destroy your plants, not the beneficial ones. When the weather gets warmer, I plan to spray Neem oil as a preventative. “Organic” insecticides work too, but only with small infestations, in my experience.

I realized about 2 months ago my monstera had thrips. I took cutting just in case the plant went too far south. But, I was able to clear the thrips using beneficial nematodes. I bought them on Amazon from Bug Sales. Look for the Sf nematodes (Fungus Gnat and Rootknot Exterminator). I also found thrips on several other plants as well and it has QUICKLY gotten rid of them. Follow the direction carefully and wash off all the adult thrips you can before you apply. The nematodes will live in the soil (so long as it is moist) and devour the little you-know-whats! After finding this stuff, thrips still are a pain because of the effort to get rid of them...but, they are not the villains they used to be.

I just finally bought my first monstera 4 days ago.. 😍💚 Being a new plant mom (outside of succulents) I have been wanting a monstera for the past few months and finally saw a bunch at Trader Joes. I thought I inspected all the leaves (snow white spots, no spider webs etc) and soil (nothing moving) but noticed moss growing on the soil (not knowing the time what that meant). I purchased one with the most beautiful and full leaves. Today, I noticed the leaves were curling in bit and more moss growing on the base of the soil. I googled what that meant and apparently moss grows in potted plants that are not well draining soil. So I inspected some more. I had to use my iPhone magnifier and light to see that there were not white worms but teeny tiny long brown worms (maybe thrips but the thrips in my mint plant looked nothing like these). Then I saw a few bugs that flew out of the soil. I immediately panicked. I repotted the monstera. Tossed the old soil, washed her roots and had the roots soak in water (5-10min) with a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide. I then washed her down with water, sprayed alcohol on the leaves and roots. Over kill? I cleaned the old nursery pot with soap and water and sprayed bleach and wiped it down and re-potted with new soil. OMYGOSH. What a morning. I feel so discouraged to purchase full grown plants from anywhere vs a cutting in fear that the soil is carrying some kind of bug or something else. Any tips? I couldn't find a video other than this video with needing to re-pot due to having issues with thrips or other types of bugs. Thank you.... didn't realize being a plant mama was this stressful... LOL but when I look at my monstera... its all worth it... 💚

I jad a huge out break of several types of pests through out my plants. Any plant I could I ended up chopping off leaves as well on my vining plants etc. I had the worst time with over saturating the soil from all of the treatments. In all the video's I've watched about treating for pests this is something nobody talks about. Thankfully I caught that I was starting to deal withtoot issues along with pest issues and started gently pulling plants from pots to allow the soil time to dry before sliding it back into the pot again. My apartment turned into a plant hospital. I even had one of the cactus/succulant companies giving me ideas on what to do. I only gave up on 2 plants, 2 that were to much for me to care for since becoming disabled. So even if your a beginner you can win this war. Your plants may look like the have been through the war but in the end they will start shooting out new leaves. Just don't give up.

My solution: make cuttings out of every leaf/node/root, keep them completely underwater for a couple of hours to drown the bugs, replant them in new soil, and let the old soil dry out for a few weeks under the sun before reusing it.

I got those bugs from a bag of soil when I repotted my arrowhead plant. I am always checking for bugs and caught it right away. I used insecticide for house plants. I sprayed both the plant and the soil. I also treated any of my other leafy plants just in case. It's been well over a month and I haven't seen them cime back. I have a feeling they were all babies. I couldn't figure out what they were, no wings. I'm thinking they were to young to have wings yet?? I'll continue watching for them and I wish you luck on your propagation. What a terrible thing to happen.
@sarahgiggles9444
@sarahgiggles9444 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the younger thrips in the nymph stage don't seem to have wings and are just white/light green little things. The adults are longer, darker, slender, with wings. I know there are a lot of species though so I imagine it depends on what type you have. My understanding is that unfortunately the nymphs can also lay eggs.

Ahh! My monstera is dying tremendously from thrips. It's really big and all the leaves have started to wilt or have already wilted. It's too big to just carry it in and out of the tub to wash it down.. I dont think there are any good cuttings either and have had cuttings from it, washed it for ten minutes. Sprayed with insecticidal soap but.. no luck, they came back to even the cuttings! (Maybe I should have submerged it in diluted insecticidal soap water) But overall, thank you for sharing! I might consider ladybugs🤔 does anyone know how to get rid of their fear of bugs?

Hi I have a question. So I suspected my indoor plants had thrips so I bagged the pots leaving the leaves and branches out and I washed them down with my hose and sprayed them down with Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew Insecticide spray (I think I used the whole spray bottle on 8 plants) and left them to dry. Now the leaves look dull and puffy and my monstera leaves looks slightly discolored. Is there such a thing as overwatering leaves? Or maybe I used too much of the insecticide ? Or maybe the combination of the watering them down first then adding the spray was too much ? Did I kill my plants by doing this ?

@@thenewhope8171 yes, the predatory mites can reach the tiniest places. But also I suggest using Reduviidae bugs as well. These will hunt the adult thrips. Its a bit costly but very efficient. One thing to make sure is that ( and I know this sounds weird since you try to contain the outbreak ) when you release them all the plants are touching eachother so the mites and Reduviidae can roam and hunt everywhere. I am gonna buy some myself. Also thrips lay eggs in the leaves so even when you think they are all gone.. make sure

Make sure you have a very airy soil too composed of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark. Try watering once every two weeks though you’ll notice a huge difference. Good luck!

Hi Chris, I really need your advice and help to save my monstera. the leaves start getting a black spots and the spot gets bigger. I inspected the entire leaves front and back, and did not find any insects. I keep them indirect light spot and water them when it's dry based on the moisture tester. Please help what to do to save my monstera.... Thank you.

jane kwoun hmm. I would check for possible root rot. Moisture meter can sometimes not be accurate, but sounds like black leaves are either the roots are rotting or some other diseases

I’m having them same problem with my Monstera, so this video came at the perfect time. I used neem oil and I think it helped, but it’s hard to tell right now. I have two new little leaves growing, so hopefully they don’t turn brown or anything. One question, should I clip off all of the infected leaves? Or will they survive if the rest of the plant is fine? Infected meaning they have some brown spots.

I hope you will try hydrogen peroxide cure (?) for the thrips. You can make a spray for the leaves and a mixture to put in the soil and it should kill them. I had them once on a philodendron and sprayed with neem oil to no avail. I didn't know about hydrogen peroxide at the time. I would have tried that first.

Lady bugs are not the same as the Asian beetles (I think that's what it's called) lady bugs won't be a pest but the beetles will.

You don't have to buy that stuff. My monstera had thrips too. So I washed it down with water and repotted it. I washed it until I didn't see any thips, then repotted it. And they came back one time so I washed it down and they're still not back.

Have you ever heard of Diotamaceous Earth (spell check) aka DE? One of the people I follow (male and I know his name has Horticulture In it) used it and it worked for him. I did research on DE and the consensus was the same. It kills the bugs. One of the negatives is it kills beneficial bugs too. So your lady bugs need to be released into the universe first. I found snails, millipedes, and other small insects in my biOrb and I had the hubby remove everything and I added coco coir only and it was looking good and then I purchased some African violets. I washed all the dirt I could from the roots and the same night I saw another snail. I was stuck on stupid. I purchased the DE and put it on all the plants and soil of my biOrb and so far so good. I put this on my other plants too. A few succulents had mealy bugs and again so far so good. It is said that this stuff takes 12-24 hours to kill the insects. You can add the powder directly to the plants or mix with water. The thing about the water mix is you will need to wait for the powder to dry to become useful. To apply dry I saw it added with some type of brush, shaken directly onto the plant. Mine came with a duster. You will need to have air circulating wherever you use it. You can also use a mask to cover your nose and mouth. Note that DE is also taken orally by us humans. I would suggest using this b4 throwing away your mother plant. Again this stuff does kill beneficial bugs so keep that in mind. I hope this helps. Sorry for the epic long response lol.
