I’ve also read, in Scientific American, of all places, that the two qualities that will cause people to see you as a leader are competence & good will. That works for me. Authority is different, as it’s often appointed in a top-down fashion.

That's not universally true, of course. I've got a utility pole in my back yard. There's a utility easement so the power company can maintain it, but it's still my private property.
