Thaiger team member ‪@JettGunther‬ tells of his experience at a 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat in Phitsanulok Province in central Thailand. No talking, no phone, vegetarian meals, and an all-day meditation schedule. Transformative experience or sheer insanity? Tim finds out the answers!

I have been to a number of 10 day retreats and they are enjoyable and beneficial although as Jeff said the first few days are tough.. Jeff explains the situation very clearly and accurately.. he explains the experience in a really truthful and insightful way.. try it out ..

Very interesting and insightful. We often don’t think about how much personal contact or digital contact effects us positively or negatively on an internal level. Great topic. Thank you for sharing.

Sounds really cool, I need to try this. I started meditating every morning about 6 months ago and it has changed my life.

Congratulations Jets for successfully completing the 10 days session. I had a colleague who attended a similar session at "Suam Mok" near Surathani, South Thailand. He conveyed similar experience. Basic comforts were even less there...like pillow made of wood just a mat for bed etc...

Looks like the young lad is somewhat wiser than the old farang! 😁 Hopefully Tim is just pretending to be ignorant or flippant about the whole experience/process; possibly catering to a less "mindful" audience from his home country? 🤔 Vipassana is just one among many forms of what could be categorized as "insight meditation" techniques. The Dhamma Brothers or Doing Time, Doing Vipassanas are nice documentaries highlighting the use of this technique in the prison system in the US and India.

Jett's description of his experience was very accurate. I did one in Canada about 50 kilometers north of Toronto and my experience was similar. I wanted to watch this video just to see the comparison between the 2 countries. It was great to see that the schedule is the same. I will definitely go there next year if this pandemic will lighten up and travelling becomes acceptable. No quarantine for me. However it would be the perfect time to meditate.

@@thasspongthapsang6769 You are correct. Having said that, there is something special about spending 10 days doing a Vipassana retreat.

If a 14-day retreat like this was available for the quarantine, I would much prefer this over 14 days in an overpriced hotel room. I would even opt for this if it were to cost the same.

I have done about 5 of these, I’m looking forward to a blow out in bangkok then head down to Wat Sian Mokkh international dharma hermitage! I highly suggest everyone does this at least once in their lifetime. There is also a 7 day mediation centre in Koh samui called Dipabhavan. I couldn’t recommend these highly enough!

Excellent interview Tim, and Jett, your explanation of your experience was just amazing. Good luck as you continue with the practices you have found to enrich your life. Those of us who watch The Thaiger regularly, are very lucky to have you both on the team. Thanks again

Thank you very much Jett. I been at temple just outside Bkk and experienced the same. One thing that I remembered strongly was the feeling of happiness, relief after 9 days of meditation. The world would be a better place if everyone could do this. 🙏 Stefan

No offence, but Goenka was a layperson, not a monk. His meditation does not go deep enough. Highly attained monks reach the nimitta and jhana stages of meditation, can recall past lives, get enlightened and end rebirth.
