I get so overwhelmed and deregulated with mess and clutter as part of my ADHD. Embracing minimalism slowly since I became a mum a year ago has made the most massive difference. The more I have the more I need to manage and I just literally couldn't do it anymore even with the best schedules and lists.

Maybe your an HSP, a highly sensitive person? I find this is where I personally fit in , however I'm an extravert,as well! There are lectures on this on KZbin I came across this online by accident! It's helped me to understand how I think and feel about my personal spaces. And I also don't believe in labeling myself, because I don't ever want to limit myself! But it's quite an interesting topic, and one, I highly recommended for everyone to give a listen too! It mentions how we get overwhelmed, by clutter, because we're also using so much of our senses, at once!

I've gotten my parents started with reducing their clothing. They wouldn't start because it was too big a project. I put an empty basket in their guest room, and when they decide to donate, they put it in the basket. When I visit, I take it to the thrift store for them. I'm thrilled with how they have sorted so much even when I'm not there to help!

Once I started having one empty box in the corner that I could throw stuff in whenever I happen upon it it became so much easier to D clutter and get rid of things. Once something goes in that box I never look at it again. When the box is full I take it to Goodwill. It's probably the best thing I've ever done to help myself get rid of unneeded objects

I grew up (1950s-1960s) with five dresses, one for each day of school and two pair of shoes, my good shoes for school and my worn out former "good shoes" that were now used for playing outside. My play clothes were hand-me-downs from my older sister and/or cousin that used to be their school dresses. I guess with that beginning I would never be a clothes horse, I probably have more than 33 items now, but not much more, and we don't have seasons in Arizona so that really simplifies everything when it comes to cold weather items.

I was the same in the 80,s in Australia, we had 2 school uniforms , 2 dresses one store bought one home made , same with jeans and t shirts or skirts etc I had a friend that started university with 3 pairs of shorts all homemade , 3 t shirts , 2 pairs of jeans and one dress . We can definitely work with way less and appreciate / love the things we own.

That's how I grew up, but it made me so anxious that when I moved out, I started buying stuff in order to have spare clothes. And I valued my clothes a lot, being used to having so little, that getting a stain or a tear practically gave me a nervous breakdown. So I buy far too many clothes just so that they don't mean so much to me. Having 30 sweaters, ruining one doesn't give me a panic attack.

They're so right. I started in minimalism due to a clothing size change. I was in transition and didn't want to spend a lot of money on a temporary wardrobe, so I bought a capsule type wardrobe in blacks, whites, and greys. It improved my quality of life so much when it came to clothing that I decided to continue in it when my weight stabilized and I got the next long term wardrobe. Then I started applying it to the rest of my life and things kept getting better and better.

I love this. I've been "shopping" my closet for 6 months. If I wear something and don't like the way I feel in it or the way it fits, I get rid of it. This has helped a ton. I work in a clothing store so the temptation is there. Lol. In the last 6 months, I have bought 4 items and that is all. I have gotten rid of so much more.

I’m in my 1st month of Project 333 and it really made me step up my underwear. I was not wearing the right size bra and I had way too many of the wrong sized ones. That alone is game changing enough. But I love the freedom and the pace of this challenge. I already feel the joy of all the clothes I gave away to start this project. And I have the ability to “Shop” my closet when I feel there is something that isn’t working or is just so redundant that I swap it out for something else I have quarantined in my closet. I like that I used the 33 items as a “Container” limit so I can slowly prove it to myself what really works for me. I am crafting my own style with this method and I truly love it.

The laundry thing I learned about a year ago, is that it's more the texture than the color of the clothes to sort by, and it's so incredibly true. I've done laundry by that rule since and love it. I wash all in cold, hang dry for a few hours on an Umbrella-like clothesline set up inside our home that we got off of amazon and just put in a Christmas tree holder with weights, and then toss in the dryer to de-wrinkle after they are just damp. Hope this encourages others to be more energy efficient. :) Great tips, as always, Dawn, thank you!!!

I had color analysis done almost 40 years ago. The woman I went to didn't go by seasons. After she was finished we talked about the whole season thing and she told me if I looked at all the colors that suited me best they are colors you tend to see in nature in late summer and early fall. Years before that someone did my colors strictly based on season and she had a hard time deciding if I was a summer or a fall. She finally just said I was summer and gave me that palette which resulted in me buying a lot of stuff that didn't suit me. So, be careful of anyone who wants to put you in a season!

Hi. I love this interview. Thank you Dawn and Courtney. I did project 333 years ago. Cleaned out my wardrobe. Then read Marie Kondo and gave away more clothes. I had less clothing but I still didn't feel good in my clothes. "seasons" wise I'm a winter who grew up being dressed in brown tones which make me look ill. Then I found dressing your truth by Carol Tuttle. Changed everything. I now have 33 coathangers in my closet. Drawers hold underwear, sleep wear and workout leggings. And cardigans. The closet, of 33 hangars is dresses, skirts, pants, shirts and jackets and coats. These change seasonally - I live in New Zealand we have 4 seasons. The rest are put away until I need them. Get them out when the weather changes and it's like Christmas.

@@LifewithJennyintheUSA the key is picking out your very favorite things and seeing how you can make them work thru each season. I consider myself minimalist, but lately clothes have been creeping back into my closet somehow. After listening to your conversation, I assessed my closet. I'm wearing fewer than 33 pieces. There is a lot in there that is not for the right season and makes it quite cluttered. Now I'm going to make sure to pack away the off-season items so that my closet is less cluttered and truly reflects what I'm wearing during the current season. The only extra category that I'm not going to include in the 33 is undershirts/tee shirts-- I live in a cold climate and have one for each day of the week during the winter to wear under cozy sweaters.

I love a minimal wardrobe and I am working on building it out properly. I used to work 5 days a week outside the home in a government office. Very dressy. Now I am at stay at home Mom. I also changed sizes a lot. I went through my clothes, donated the definitely didn't want to keep, tossed the unserviceable. I kept 3 bins of nice clothes in the smaller sizes. For a few years, they have lived in those bins. Honestly I may not even like most of them anymore since tastes and needs change. BUT I decided last November to start losing weight finally. So far, 13 pounds gone. Slow, but progress! I am determined to get back to a reasonable size (not fooling myself that I'll be a size 6 again!) Once there, I will purge all clothes I don't want or need and be left with a wardrobe that fits and is useful every day. I am on my way!

A friend who became a housewife, and now a homeschooling housewife mom, reized that a few sets of scrubs for warm weather and a few sets of sweats for winter were all she needed. Scrubs are amazing, they are durable, comfortable, practical, easy to wash, have pockets, can be worn to sleep in, garden, Scrub the floor, homeschool, but are still presentable for trips to the store. Same with sweats. Her kids basically live in sweats- being homeschooled, they don't have the pressure to keep up with fashion. It simplifies everyone's routine, and keeps the budget way way down, because she gets pretty much everything from goodwill.

This 🙌🏽 I needed to hear how illogical it is to think it would be SUCH a chore to get new clothing for a changing body. After my 3rd baby, I am placing this unnecessary pressure to return to a size I really don’t think is conducive to what God has me doing in this season (chasing toddlers, nursing, etc.). Thank you for the kind reminders that bodies are always changing and clothes are to fit us- not our job to fit clothing. Since I may be harboring clothing that I’ve had for 10 years anyway and it might be time for a change :)

Such a great point! I’m in the same boat you are! I am a year postpartum with our third and I have clothes that I used to love and fit into maybe after my first child but now I feel like my body is different and I have a tendency to want to try desperately to fit my body into those old clothes instead of embracing my body now and having clothes now that fit and make me feel good!!

I love the idea of just throwing it all in a pile on the bed and picking out what works for me now. I’m inspired to do that soon and a couple of the clothing items I’m thinking of (a couple pair of jeans I love) could probably be purchased in a bigger size and style from where I got them.

If you look at fashion history, for centuries clothing was made to fit us and only in the last about 100 years has society changed that idea and feed us this idea that we have to change our bodies to make the clothes look good. Add to that the pressure of what is deemed beautiful from photoshopped social media and you end up wonder why you feel so bad about your body. I say we stop this run away train and do what makes us feel great!

Thanks for yet another creative direction in your guide to minimalism! So many good thoughts in this one to contemplate. I will say that after losing 35 lbs. it was fun to look in the "overflow" closet and find things I had loved enough to save and now fit me! It was motivating enough that I may use it to go on to lose the other 30 lbs I want/need to lose for the sake of my knees, not just my vanity. Spoiler - it is better to lose weight when you are younger and your skin is more elastic. When you lose it when you are older (like me) you look a little wrinklier...

I did the same thing with all my clothes when I started my capsule wardrobe. I had totes for pant, totes for tops, totes for dresses and multiple totes for shoes. I had to keep rotating all this stuff and started following people who talked about capsule wardrobes and it took me about 2 years to create mine. I love this concept and if you don't think you can do it then start by downzing to get it all into the closet and never have to rotate or store any items. Now I no longer own a dress, skirt, heels or fancy purses for dress. I have a "uniform" which I could wear at work (casual as it was a warehouse) Now retired and wear the same things. Thanks for sharing and it's a journey as now decluttering my home.

I have been waiting for you to do a video like this! I recently released, oh my gosh, probably 7 full big trash bags of clothing to the Battered Women's shelter and my closet is STILL packed full and I have 3, no, I think 5 (!!!) containers of clothing that I haven't looked at in over 2 years. I have a lot of work to do and I like this idea. I think that I'm probably going to go for 60 items or so and I'm going to keep working on paring down my shoes by a 1/3rd or 1/2. Very informative and fun, thank you! I recently went through my jewelry box and jewelry that was in my drawers and containers. I went through every single piece and donated a bunch to the battered women's shelter, took a bunch to a jewelry store and had them repaired, had a watch battery replaced and now I'm wearing the watch again (Yay!) and I bought 4 Stackers from the Container Store and I neatly organized all of it. I am so happy! I no longer have jewelry hidden away in crevices anywhere and jewelry I will never wear. It's all there in my stackers, which are beautiful!

I've been doing Project 333 for about 5 years now and though I am not as concerned any more about a strict 33-item limit, I still love the freedom I feel having fewer clothes cluttering up my closet and the delight I feel when a new season arrives and I welcome back the clothes I haven't seen in 6 months. I really love nearly all my clothes now and have very little guilt or overwhelm when I open my closet. Project 333 has been a great way to approach my wardrobe and it was my gateway into simplifying other aspects of my life.

I started a capsule wardrobe by doing a 10 piece carry on bag for a week long vacation. I found that I didn’t wear all 10 pieces. I did the 333 for one full year and found that where I live because we are basically a 2 season weather cycle, having a basic 20+ wardrobe and adding in seasonal pieces works best for me. I love how well it reduced my tardiness in getting places because I couldn’t figure out what to wear. I also really love walking in my closet and knowing that I will look and feel good in every option. Thanks for highlighting this

I love Courtneys Project 333. I started it after my last pregnancy in 2016 and will never go without it again. I don't include my earrings, because I really like earrings. But I only kept one watch, one necklace and one bracelet. I use 2 coats and 4 pairs of shoes every season. I have 20 clothes hangers in my closet, so if I want to hang something new or something different, something from a hanger has to go. I donate that or it goes back in the box. I no longer change every three months, but stick to the number of hangers. As the seasons change, my clothes gradually change with them. My sportswear has also become my loungewear. My husband and I both have only one small wardrobe. I know every day that all the choices that hang out there are great. I highly recommend it!

I never watch a video twice but I did here. This topic seriously interests me. I've heard from C. Carver before from The Minimalists but never knew she wrote books ! So this time I grabbed a notebook and, from my sofa, listed my current items and, amazingly, I counted 33 ! I even counted shoes, my coat, gloves and hat and 2 pieces I exclusively wear at home and 2 other pieces I wear once in a season. It's amazing ! And I live in a very cold climate with lots of layers included. Even if I know I'm very minimalist about clothes, I didn't think I had a 33 pieces wardrobe ! I didn't count jewelry, pj and underwear. After that, I went to check it in my wardrobe and realised I just forgot 3 items, including a pair of shoes. Amazing experience ! I'm glad I counted. Seriously, all of you, test it. It worths it 100%. Nelly from France

Dawn, thank you for introducing Courtney Carver! I follow you, Cass, and Dana every video and found myself being a hoarder. So, making that confession, I have been trying to minimize my life in small ways. My number one problem is clutter, but the anxiety that I feel is overwhelming to almost paralyzing. Watching this video gave me a new perspective to declutter my wardrobe. Thirty three items gave me the challenge to pair down extremely the amount of clothes I have. I own a small ranch with 3 bedrooms, in each room closet I have stuffed clothing into them to the max, but only really wear certain items each season, repeating those same items weekly as they are laundered because those items are ones that fit or quite frankly less wrinkled. I also have a large amount of dressy clothes that are not being used as I retired and am no longer in the work field. Thank you for videos that are inspiring and entertaining. I look forward to your next video. ~Debi in Ohio
