All the 331 passengers and 17 crew aboard a Saudi airliner Jumbo had a providential escape when the wide-bodied aircraft landed with thud at an air force airfield ignoring warning cartridges fired by airmen.
No passenger of the Saudia Boeing 747, which was on a flight from Riyadh to Chennai, was injured as the plane, instead of landing at Chennai international airport, touched down on a much shorter runway at the Indian Air Force (IAF) airfield than needed for such a big aircraft and screeched to a halt, causing its tyres to burst.
The Saudi plane landed on a 4763-feet runway at the IAF airfield, as against 8,000 feet runway required for a jumbo, even as airmen fired red cartridges signalling refusal of landing permission to it. The Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered an inquiry into the incident and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) also appointed a one-member fact-finding committee to go into all aspects of the incident. Yesterdays incident came six months after a Saudi jumbo was involved in a mid-air collision with a Kazakh transport plane over Charkhi-Dadri in Haryana killing all the 359 passengers on board the two aircraft on November 12 last year. Giving details of the sequence of events that led to the incident, a defence spokesman, who arrived at the Tambaram air force station, said the duty radar controller spotted the unusual sight of a civilian aircraft flying over IAF airspace.
Immediately, he contacted the duty radar controller at the Chennai airport and asked him not to allow any civilian aircraft into the restricted area. The spokesman said the Chennai airport controller replied there was some problem with his radar, but said he would try to contact the aircraft and instruct the pilot suitably.
Meanwhile, the aircraft went away from the restricted zone, but again reappeared over IAF airspace, approximately at a height of 2000 feet, which, according to the spokesman, was not the right approach for landing at the IAF aifield.
Once again, the airforce controller spoke to the airport controller even as the aircraft turned left and went away from the IAF airfield. But, for the third time the aircraft appeared and this time the pilots approach was for making a landing and the IAF controller, on seeing the aircraft approach, immediately instructed the airmen on duty to fire red cartridges (used to indicate that landing permission has been denied).
Simultaneously, the Chennai air traffic controller was asked to instruct the pilot to leave the IAF zone. Four more red cartridges were fired when the aircraft was one km from the touchdown point on the IAF runway. In spite of these warnings, the aircraft approached and touched down.
The jet landed with a big thud and came to a jolting and screeching halt by using almost the entire 4763 feet of the secondary IAF runway. Due to immense friction created by the heavy landing, four of its tyres burst.

Imagine the trauma, the bullying, the feeling of stupidity and worthlessness the pilots would’ve gone through.... everyone probably laughed at them... I really feel bad for them I wouldn’t wish this to happen to my worst enemy... poor guys :”(

It was a defense air-field and obviously pilots/passengers/baggage may have..had to be security investigations. An error was made and, ...the pilots took care of the passengers, avoiding any major incident.

No. Human error is very often to be condoned as long as damages are not too serious. In fact, the Boeing company should have rewarded the pilots for such a daring task, a feat their own test pilots couldn't have performed. The act upheld the trustworthiness of Boeing aircraft ! ( I think, 1.16 M Riyals is peanuts for Saudi Arabian airlines when value of human lives and aircraft are considered. )

A similar incident happened in 2019 when pilots on Iran's Saha Airlines Boeing 707 mistook the Fath Air Base Runway as Payam International Airport Runway as the two runways were just a couple of kilometres apart. A 707 generally required a runway length more than 2,500 m (8,200 ft), but the runway at Fath Air Base was only 1,300 metres (4,300 ft). It eventually overshot the runway and crashed through a wall, and came to rest after colliding with a house. It was the end of the Boeing 707 family as it was the last Boeing 707 in operation.

When this incident happened ...my dad was posted in TAMBARAM AIR FORCE BASE ....As a fighter controller...When this aircraft landed ..my dad was in the Hangar(where the planes are kept)...Talkimg to his colleagues....When The air force controller informed the QRT(Quick reaction team) about it...The Hooter (a very loud alarm) went off...The security personnel arrived at the scene and my Dad was watching it from the tower (he went back when he got to know) And literally...my dad told me that it was the best experience of his life....😂..Because everybody thougjt that it was a hostile aircraft...In such a short runway...Many people think that this incident was nothing just a mistake....but in reality the passenger plane was awaited by anti-hijack commandos😂 Ayan 14yrs

Responses such as these have always amused me as to how naive people could be. There is nothing "top secret" about what Ayan has written. If Ayan knows about it, every foreign espionage service knows about the structure and the response of the personnel in that airfield.

Excellent post Tapesh! Brought back some memories of my youth. I remember both the 1968 Garuda Indonesia Convair landing at Juhu as well as the 1972 JAL one so well. It was said at that time that an elderly gentleman who lived in a bungalow just across the street from the end of the RWY 08 on SV Road, saw the aircraft coming and died of a heart attack (could be one of those urban legend stories). I remember Juhu Flying Club. My brother (who was a commercial pilot for 42 years) took me on my first joyride in a HUL-26 Pushpak Mk.1 when I was 5 (1961).

Somehow I feel sorry for the pilots, mistakes do happen. I come from a family linked to aviation and I have been told in 80s and 90s most forigen pilots trusted visual landing over instrument landing in India due to absence of right technology in many airports mostly due to bureaucracy.

Greetings from Canada. Thank you for your explanation. It’s very difficult for non pilots to understand how easy it is for pilots to make an error like this. Even better would be some goggle earth or actual photos from aircraft. I’m pretty sure that seeing the same conditions the pilots saw when making their decision would be a humbling experience for even the most jaded pilot. Maybe you could team up with simmers or other pilots to try to get visuals that show what it was really like trying to spot the correct runway under the same conditions. Thank you for showing that this incident still happens regardless of experience, training, race or nationality. Finally, congratulations on breaking 100k!!! Loved the music, children’s voices, narration, editing, etc. Very enjoyable.

I saw another video where the same thing happened but in reverse, a military aircraft (C-17 globemster) I think landed at a civilian airport... The runway was very short but the pilot managed to land the aircraft safely in the limited space.. But the problem arose when there was not enough room for the aircraft to take off from that airport.... 😂

I am from Tambaram, Chennai. I came to know about this landing couple of months ago through a Tamil KZbin channel. The landing had happened in the early morning around 0600 hours. Also at 09:47 of this video, it is Saudi Airlines which had to pay 1.16M Riyals (~1 Crore INR) to the Indian Air Force as a part of parking fees and not the other way round.

First he said that and at 9.50 he says that IAF paid the money to the airlines. Also the passengers had to wait in the aircraft for more than 5 hours due to discussions between the civilian pilots,IAF and the civilian authorities. They had to bring in the high ladder from Chennai airport, since the IAF Base does not have this kind of ladders, passengers had to be transported with their luggages to Chennai airport for Customs and Immegration clearance. I live just a Km form this base and am witness to all these.

The way I learnt flying IFR: always back a visual approach with an instrument approach. Visual approach sounds easy - but it is more error prone as it is easy to lose situational awareness, especially in an unfamiliar terminal environment. Even if an instrument approach does not exist for that runway, it is a good idea to construct one with custom waypoints that would line you up with the extended center line and lead you to the runway.

You said that India Air Force paid that amount around 1.5 Millions×4 as parking charges and all but Why did we paid ? It was their Mistake not Ours🤨🧐

It is right brother, how many people can be put at risk by a minor mistake, if a big Boeing lands at a small airport, then it will be a loss, but it showed the prudence of the pilot and his courage in the last moment.

I was on a mission where we were called by SAR command that there was an unclosed flight plan at a nearby airport and do a ramp check. (This was during the biggest event of the year for the state.). We found the guy. He was not from the US and proceeded to argue with 10 people in military uniforms he was at the correct airport and we were wrong. The argument was finally resolved by one of our ground team leaders asking him, "is there a 747 out on that ramp?" "No there isn't.". "Then you are at the wrong airport!". Fortune shined on that pilot and he was told to go close his flight plan quickly since we had a lifeguard priority flight for one of the local hospitals waiting for an organ immediately call for final approach.

Yes you will get 15k stipend. Suggestion: if you want to do cadet program then don't go for chimes aviation academy ones its more like sarkari daftar stuff and they are not sure for anything. Go for newzealand ones or cae or l3.

It was so normal those days, flight crew talking to Chennai airport for landing, but aligning with Tambaram airport runway on turning finals on visual approach landings. I as FE, on a number of occasions saw pilot being warned by alert ATC to correct his approach to Chennai airport during visual approach landings. That day, may be, ATC duty officer was lost elsewhere, else he would have alerted the pilots on time, like for every other approach!

That’s what happened in Netherlands more recently…..many Lufthansa 747s had landed into the Enschede Twente airport for long term storage, but later on they realized when they decided to remove, that the runway is only 7000-7800 feet, which is still not enough for a 747 to take off.

The Saudi senior Captain who flew the aircraft out was the late Captain Ammar Jamjoom. Thank you for the excellent narration. For the first time I heared the story or the sequense of events from the Indian side. The cooperation between the Saudi side and the Indian side was examplery and gave positive resulrs. Thank you Captain.
