How a Blind Person Uses a White Cane - Stairs

this is how blind people use a white cane on the stairs. Or rather, How I use my white cane to navigate up and down stairs.
Using the white cane this way, allows me to navigate safely up and down any stairs.
If you are visually impaired then you should seriously consider a white cane for navigating.
Holding the cane directly in front of you, like a pendulum, allowing it to swing back and forth will guide you to where the next step is. When the cane tip stops touching something when you gently swing it forward signals that there are no more stairs to climb.

Great demo. I'm a part time cane user, only being it in poor lighting. I find it difficult to judge if I've ones or two steps left at the end when coming down steps or stairs. I guess I need more practice!

Hi Evie Just take your time, and feel the drop. When the cane hits the last drop, if you hold it in front of you, it will then just slide forward, then you know there are no more steps. Yeah, sounds like its just a little more practice, but be patient, and don't worry, you will get the hang of it in no time at all :-)

Cheers mate are use the same methods but obviously at the top of the stairs you’ve got to swipe left or right obviously coming down the stairs I let it rest on the inside of the fingers and give it a little shove if it has got a little step like you mentioned in shops

I guess most people use this method - was shown my my rehab guy , so stayed with it. Before I was shown, I used to worry a bit about stairs - but to be honest, its a doddle now :-) It amazes me how much the cane allows me to do independently. I do feel "strange" sometimes, depending on my mood or the environment - but in the main, its a means to an end and Im away Hope all is good with you

@@crazyblindman69 hats a shame. A lot of sports people who are diabetic have them, as they have all sorts of body wear for them. When I did a lot of sports, I used to wear it on either a leg strap or arm strap
