One important detail missing is that the costs for R&D of the drug sofosbuvir was largely paid by public money. Thus, the argument that "large" R&D costs would need to be covered by the sales is false.

Never mind the fact that most of the profits go to shareholders and not even back into R and D within their own company.

I think it was about 5 or 6 years ago I started getting horrible blister like lesions on my hands & arms which is called porphyria which is sometimes caused by hep c & that's how I found out I had hep c. With the help of a family friend who is an orthopedic surgeon & a few other people & a lot of luck I got Harvoni for free from Gilead's patient assistance program. It was a horrible time & very embarrassing with the skin condition & I hate to think what condition I'd be in now or even if I'd still be alive but I'm grateful things worked out. I feel for everyone who has to face major health problems. I've since had a heart attack & went through cardiac arrest. But I'm still here for some reason.

Wonderful piece detailing the greed in the pharma industry. I'd like for this to be seen by more people. Not only is it journalistically wondrous , it is also technically great. Although i believe some of these shots are far too zoomed in, I look forward to seeing more like this .

So who should decide what a fair price should be? Even if it’s expensive, it is still better than not having a drug. Removing profits, will remove the incentive to invest and harm future patients with diseases incurable today.

50c to make once in production - how much was the research, how many failed itterations did the drug go through before being put to market? I have no doubt 100k is too much, but stating an unfairly deflated production cost is also not right.

Although there is undeniable corruption in the pharmaceutical industry, when considering the costs of development and going through the process of clinical trials of the drug, the cost is much bigger than that needed to manufacture the drug, so we have to be careful when judging prices of pharmaceuticals but admittedly in the US the situation is out of control
@Eoshatt
@Eoshatt 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your balanced view. There are many many problems with the way pharmaceutical companies work, but it must be said that the price of a drug is not just the price of the production of the pill itself.
@boogaleeboutte
@boogaleeboutte 3 жыл бұрын
The fact is that most of the costs of research and development are subsidized by the US Govt. In other words your tax dollars. Then they turn around and gouge us with unjustifiably high prices for years and years. Our Congress in it's infinite wisdom has extended the length of time that medical patents can restrict the ability of other companies to produce affordable generic substitutes. It's a corrupt system and until people start making life difficult for these monsters (yeah, monsters) it will continue.
