What I find really interesting about this design is that there is no ring gear. The ratio of the planet gears to the input sun gear and output sun gear is what determines the OD ratio. You only need to hold the planet carrier stationary to engage the OD! I've never seen a planetary setup like that before, and it gives me all sorts of ideas for my own projects!

What an ingenious design and reasonably simple. How much torque can these units handle? I see gear vendors is up to 2000 hp
@GearBoxVideo3 жыл бұрын
The 4 speed will fail before the OD fails.. Typically when I built them for Callaway Twin Turbos they were hit with 800HP. You can rate an OD much higher but the gear box in front of it handles the majority of the load.

How durable are those clutch apply bearings? Seems like very few transmission designs do that nowadays, opting instead for a rotating hydraulic piston assembly. The only modern gearbox I can think of that uses an apply bearing for a clutch pack is the new-ish GM 9-speed unit, and some transfer case clutches that use an electrically actuated ball ramp.
@GearBoxVideo4 жыл бұрын
This is not a clutch apply bearing the bearing simply holds the planetary in place.
@Kyriaeus4 жыл бұрын
@@GearBoxVideo Sorry, my wording was a bit unclear. 5:34 Doesn't the (non-rotating) pressure plate press against the torrington bearing to apply pressure to the (rotating) direct clutch pack? That's the part that seems rare in gearbox designs - applying pressure through a relatively large diameter bearing.
@GearBoxVideo4 жыл бұрын
The bearing is under load in direct. It's more commonly used as a thrust bearing in other applications but you are correct, this is a unique application.

Hey Paul, i finally got my dream car (1987 corvette) and im having an issue with the overdrive unit. when it attempts to go into od the dash light comes on but the trans doesnt shift into od (temp and speed up to spec). something is happening internally because i lose engine braking when the dash says its in od. when getting back on the throttle its acting like its in neutral until the engine rpms reach trans speed. just catching itself back up from the no engine brake issue.. i do still have reverse. i havent been able to find any info on this problem online. only thing i can see happening is that the solonoid isnt traveling fully and its taking the car out of direct and not putting enough force on the clutches to get into od. im feeling zero friction when i slowly get back on the throttle while in od so either the clutches arent compressing or theyre burned out. it has slipped a few times in the past when i was hard on the throttle and od kicked in (i swear i turned it off. i think its turning itself back on or my palm is hitting the switch while shifting) if you could give me any insight on this i would greatly appreciate it. thank you, Paul (also).

@GearBoxVideo2 жыл бұрын
They went with an angular contact bearing and they failed just the same. You just need to set the proper stack height of the whole assembly. The people who were assembling them didn't understand the fundamentals of clearances. Therefore most failed because the bearing was being crushed

@@GearBoxVideo probably better to fit a tappered roller in there. If you need parts made hit me up. I've got CNC capabilities
@GearBoxVideo2 жыл бұрын
Already looked into that. Not enough room and not enough material to remove to fit a bearing. FYI. I've done quite a bit of these and developed the fixes for Callaway and the Corvette challenge series. They work fine if they are set up correctly. This is no longer something I will build simply because the expense to tool up new parts ( I've already made Iron carriers, billet pistons, washers etc) is no longer profitable since these cars have little value. In what context do I need the "brakes" correction?
@davidmiller94856 жыл бұрын
I think it was me just trying to add to your defining a clutch pack. In a clutch pack when the friction plates have their teeth on the inside it's a "clutch" along with the steels. When the teeth are on the outside (so as to catch on the body of a transmission) they are called a brake, because their job is to "brake" the clutch pack when needed while a "clutch" set usually allows the clutch pack to rotate with the shaft. :) sorry if i sounded like i was being an ass. I build auto tranny's (well and race engines) and sometimes my mouth goes off before my brain kicks in and makes things more complicated than they need to be :)

Literally a small automatic transmission. It's a great dealing. Failures are really due to neglect.

worst product ever put in a 'vette. Had one. First day took an off ramp "at speed".... heel/toe shifted, thing downshifted causing my rear end to try passing me on the outside!

Hypertech and Arizona Speed had chip eliminating the automatic part making in fully manual. I sold a lot of chips in the day.

Oh man! If only I had known! Of course, in retrospect, I should have known...

@@burnerjack01 could have just pulled the relay next to the brake booster to disable it. Regular 4 speed again.

People think by disconnecting the switch and or relay that the OD vanishes. It doesn't. The person doesn't want to eliminate OD, just have full manual control with the computer safety features still available.

Man, I wish I was smart enough not to keep my tools and materials anal-retentively organized. I probably spend three hours a week organizing, but it'd be six if things were chaotic, haha!

That 4+3 was the worst transmission ever made the 1989 ZF 6 speed was 1000% better.
@GearBoxVideo3 жыл бұрын
The 4 plus 3 set up correctly worked just fine. Although a little odd it definitely was not as smooth shifting as the ZF. However you really cannot get service parts for the ZF anymore.
