In this video we meet Ivan, Nadezhda and their family of seven daughters. How do they spend their day and survive in the coldest city in the world? Nadezhda makes reindeer boots, which are some of the warmest boots in the world. We explore preparing ice, how they do heating, how much it costs, and also playing outside with their dog. The girls also visit their grandma to help her chop wood and put on the fire. The family also prepares a lovely local meal with fish, and local delicacies (my favourite). You might think that that it is very cold in Yakutia, but I'm happy to share with you the warmth of the family life of our culture.

When I first moved to Canada in the beautiful months of autumn, I noticed a lot of young couple with baby strollers. Naturally I was curious and someone deciphered the reason, 'there's only so much television you can watch'. In conditions as harsh as these having babies and raising them is one of the biggest motivations of life.

@@theoutsider7331 I think it's safe to say that any western children being brought up similarly to Yakutian kids, in that they have to work hard to contribute to the survival of their family in a harsh climate, is definitely NOT the norm.

another heartwarming episode about life in a freezer. it shows how much better difficult lives are made when there is teamwork and cooperation. Apart from the cold temps, Yakutian life seems very familiar. I grew up an only child to a chronically ill mother in rural southwest England. We were very poor. Had no car most of the week. We had no drinking water, central heating or paved road. We lived in a draughty cold house on the cliffs, where storms were frequent. I had to fetch water daily in heavy cannister from a nearby farm. Our well water for baths had to be drawn in buckets when the pump died. We had 2 log fires which had to be fed with kindling & logs sawn and chopped by me from our woodland. I had to drag branches to the house so I could do the necessary with them. I had to dig out/clear ditches to avoid flooding, hack back undergrowth, take care of our chickens including the mucking out, scythe our lawn (we had no lawnmower) to keep the snakes at bay (1 of our cats fot bitten). I had to cycle miles on hilly roads to get groceries on Saturdays. I slogged through mud & cow poo to reach the location where a van would collect me to drive 5 miles to the school bus stop. I swapped wellington boots for school shoes at the farm where we got water. At weekends I helped with housework. I learned to cook meals and bake before I was 11yrs old. My farmboy classmates called me Earth Mother because of my home life and muscles. The girls in my year never knew such hardships - their world was fashion and make up. Mine was constant tiredness and aching bones!

The most amazing part to me is not only did the indigenous people here survive in this type of climate in pre-modern times (not that it's not hard work now but, you know, it was definitely harder before things like boilers and power tools), but even had the time, energy, and person-hours to spend make clothing that was not just functional but also beautiful. Not just surviving but truly living.

Your videos are like a hug, so delightful to watch, they are a great reminder that happiness is supposed to be simple, it doesn't require the perfect conditions to grow. While people here on the West need the best car, the best house, the best weather and the best job to be happy, always chasing something else to feel complete, you find happiness on the small things, like spending time with the family, cooking together, and that's why I keep coming back to your videos, because they are a breeze of fresh air in this complicated world, an important reminder that life (and happiness) is supposed to be simple. Congrats for the amazing channel.

Despite the harsh conditions of the region it is really heartwarming to see such a loving family and the work they do to live day to day. Hi, greetings from Germany. I love your videos, especially the ones during the winter, for they take me back to 2017 when I visited Irkutsk and the Baikal region during january by participating in a school exchange project. The memories of that journey will stick with me forever. I hope you and your family continue to be happy, healthy and live so very close to this harsh but beautiful nature. A little walk on my memory lane: Imagine a 17yo from a big city in Germany, at the top of a sort of cliff at the shore of the baikal sea where you can see far into the sea as into the land, a religious site of the people indigenous to the area, with huge woodpiles with engravings, a long walk behind me with my a little bit scattered group, most sticking together but me and another student going ahead and admireing the fierce and deeply meaningful scenery. And then, a dog, just like the one of the family in this video, with their thick hair - not very long, but thick -, just… almost the same puppy comes along and I watch while my classmate manages to pet the dog and I get time to take a few pictures but not too much, for I feel like you always remember more if you are watching with your eyes and other senses - and not through the lense of your camera. And I did. And just by showing us the dog, I remembered it all. Thank you.

Absolutely beautiful, stunning in every way. I love how homely it all is and with great food too along with a lot of love. I am homeless, I live in a tent in the Scottish Highlands with my daughter and our dog. We have no friends, no family and no help from anyone. We would happily live in Yakutia if it was possible, we are used to being cold, not as cold as it is there but in a tent it's cold enough. We could adapt, have friends and actually be happy. We can work hard given the chance, we can both cook very well and I can make and repair things, we would fit right in.

I'm fascinated by the culture in Russia and Asia because it's very similar to Alaska Native culture. I know coastal villages don't have much running water so ice or carrying water back home was tough. They use wood stoves or toyo stove (expensive option because fuel is like double or triple in the villages).
