This is the United States of America F/A 18 super hornet.
In this Content we will learn how a Fighter Jets Works.
We will look at the General Arrangement of the jet ,the two General Electric F 414 G E 400 Turbo Fan engines, the basic flight controls that helps the aircraft move and the armament that helps it become one the best fighter assault jet of the Juggernaut US military that made it a super power.
F/A 18 Super Hornet got its name with the designation F stands for Fighter and A stands for Attack.
The Super Hornet was designed and built by McDonnell Douglas and first flew in 1995. After the merger of McDonnell Douglas and Boeing, the two giants of the military industry.
It joined the US Navy's fleet, replacing the aging Grumman F-14 Tomcat which in its right was a legend, but had to retire in 2006.
The Super Horne Is a bigger Jet with a length of 18.31 meter and it was also decided to increase it’s wingspan to around 13.62 meter much bigger as compared to the its Predecessor the Hornet with 20 percent increase in Size increasing it’s weight to a massive 32,081 lb pound or 14,552 kg and when it is equipped as a fighter it has a Gross weight of 47,000 lb pound or 21,320 kg.

One of the issues with the F/A-18A was the relatively low internal fuel load of, approximately 10,000 pounds. On the other hand, the A-4 "Scooter" carried about half that at 5,200 pounds of jet fuel. The A model Horne motors were 16,000 pounds thrust. I was a mech in VFA-305.

@@Aitelly - You're very welcome. The reason the fuel load sticks in my mind is that it was almost the same as that of the A-7B VA-305 'Lobos" replaced with the Hornets. Spent much more time working on A-4 and two seat TA-4 "Scooters" though.

@scootergeorge7089
@scootergeorge7089 Жыл бұрын
@@elitedima9672 - I was a mech. Never worked on the Tomcat. But it is my understanding that it is more maintenance intensive than the Hornet. As a pure fighter aircraft, the Tomcat may have a slight edge. But close enough that the superior pilot would prevail. Towards the end, weapons racks were added to the Tomcat to make it more versatile perhaps too little, too late.

Not trying to take away from this fighter or anything of the sorts... But if we were to be honest the first powered flight was in 1903 was only 120 feet up to 200 feet after further testing at approximately 10 or so feet above ground level at 7mph or so. Let's just say it's more like a hundred years or so vs thousands.

Watch closely as an aircraft turns. The loss of lift caused by the tilt of the wings causes the plane to drop. This illiterates the interplay between the lift from the wings, thrust of the engine, and gravity always lurking behind the scenes. A little bit of trivia for you.

I used to work at Boeing and spent time at plant in St Louis where F/A 18 Super Hornet is made. Most of the video is accurate. I won't split hairs on minor differences. Just glad someone took time to produce this video. The F/A 18 has some stealth features which were barely understood in the 90's. Goal of stealth is to reduce radar return signature. Twin vertical stabilizers only 1/2 as tall as a single reflect less radar back to sender. Both vertical stabilizers are at an angle which make return radar reflection bounce harmlessly in different direction. The very sharp nose which houses the digital array radar antenna does not return radar back. The inlets to the twin turbojet engines are cleverly designed to hide the spinning forward compressor blades. On F-15, if you look head on, you can see the compressor blades. This caused a very strong return radar signal back to enemy. On F-18, the engines are inset deeper into fuselage, an angle was introduced in the air ducts and compressor blades are out of sight. Other stealth features include some RAM (radar absorbing material) in key areas, highly sloped canopy structure, even the paint has some RAM and the color makes it hard to see from below or even from above. When I first saw the 2 little turbofan engines, I was not impressed. I had spent much time at Everett Plant where wide body twin aisle aircraft are made. Engines on 777 are over 9 feet in diameter and produce over 100,000 pounds of thrust compared to 22,000 on F-18. Of course, commercial jets don't have afterburners and weigh many times more in weight. I was part of a Lean Manufacturing Team from Commercial sent to fix problems in Military. We can assemble a 747 in a week or two. F-18 was taking several years. It had 1 window, 2 engines, 2 seats, no bathrooms, no kitchens, and was tiny in comparison. 747 has hundreds of windows, hundreds of seats, multiple bathrooms and kitchens, flight deck big enough for 6 people, hundreds of miles of wiring, tubing, and ducts. People comfort important. Yes, we did reduce manufacturing problems on F-18. We made them faster, better, with less defects to fix later, and reduced price considerably. Price was number one driver for Navy on second contract.

Credits for notes/Corrections from the Experts: 1)Steven Rohrich :I used to work at Boeing and spent time at plant in St Louis where F/A 18 Super Hornet is made. Most of the video is accurate. I won't split hairs on minor differences. Just glad someone took time to produce this video. The F/A 18 has some stealth features which were barely understood in the 90's. 2) Herbert Dennison: 5:00 A few notes on some of the terminology. The Super Hornet does not have slats, it has leading edge flaps. The inboard and outboard leading edge flaps are linked and move together. Th Super Hornet does not have elevators, they have horizontal stabilizers. The stabilizers control both pitch and roll (with the ailerons). An elevator is a movable surface on the trailing edge of a horizontal stabilizer such as on an airliner or Cessna. 3)Scooter George: One of the issues with the F/A-18A was the relatively low internal fuel load of, approximately 10,000 pounds. On the other hand, the A-4 "Scooter" carried about half that at 5,200 pounds of jet fuel. The A model Horne motors were 16,000 pounds thrust. I was a mech in VFA-305 6)MM is millimeter :) We messed this up big time 7)ShawnTheMaroon Ailerons part is only half-accurate. It might be true for airliners and larger cargo aircraft, but modern fighter aircraft have their horizontal stabilators (they aren't called elevators) integrated with roll control via the onboard flight control computers, which means when the pilot commands a left roll, the left stabilator also deflects along with the left aileron to assist in rolling the aircraft, and vice versa. Unlike the traditional elevator + trim combination, the entire control surface is deflected as one unit (hence why there is no separate elevator control surface and why this is called a stabilator or elevons as some others call it). This is why modern fighters have incredible roll rate compared to the older "ailerons only" concept. 8) @Yuki Onna Supers use AB(After Burner) P.S Some one reported that they don't use After Burners. 9)Correcting the Scripts with better English and Voice Over in the upcoming contents. P.S Military Technology Data are a little tough to get our hands on and also classified. Most of them are in a very grey area, but we will try our best as average Engineers and 3d Animators to bring out the best in a very Minimalistic or Simple Explanation. We take full responsibility for our mistakes.

Former Boeing here.... just checked merchandise in your Store. Really cool T-shirts with F/A 18 Super Hornet printed on them. Gotta buy a few to go along with the very "Limited Edition" actual Boeing F/A 18 Super Hornet Polo Shirt I was given in 2001 in St Louis at Boeing Military Plant. I was a Group Lead in a Lean Manufacturing Workshop held to reduce costs and defects, and to improve manufacturing processes on Super Hornet build line. Less than 100 were printed and only given to Boeing Staff who attended workshop. It's priceless and can't be replaced. Maybe I should remove from closet and put in fireproof safe instead. I do wear it occasionally, and the memories come flooding back.

One thing you forgot is with jets, sharp maneuvers are performed using the mix of rolls from the aileron to roll aircraft to the intended direction followed by an upward pitching of the elevators. Simply rolling the aircraft using the ailerons alone won't make it turn. You need input from the elevators.

YOU NEED ALL 3 ,RUDDER FOR YAW AS WELL,STEPPING ON THE BALL TO MAKE A COORDINATED TURN..
@bradwernke2770
@bradwernke2770 6 ай бұрын
All of you are wrong. This isn’t a Skyhawk, it’s a military jet. It does NOT have elevators or ailerons, it has flaperons and elevons. The elevons are the primary control service for turning and climb/descent. The flaperons assist with turns but are also flaps for slow flight and landing
