Please do a documentary on the mistreatment of football fans in Australia. For years now people such as Cody have been banned for showing passion and the main reason is because the media and Australian sporting community do not understand football and how different the culture is. As mentioned by Cody, many fans have been handed bans with no appeals which has led to the decrease in engagement among many, as well as decreasing the product of the A-League itself. Footballs main factor which separated it from other codes in Australia was active support which has been dwindled out by the FFA, clubs etc. Football without fans is nothing and the governing bodies are yet to understand this which could ultimately fold the league entirely in the not so distant future

To be fair I've seen many act like fools. That are blind drunk on arrival. That does spoil it for the other fans. You try sitting next to them. Surely there has to be another way. 9 years is way too harsh though. I'm assuming he wasn't drunk and our of control. There's nothing wrong with being a passionate fan. But we don't want to end up like the UK, and what goes on, at some of their soccer games. Media sux. Blows everything out of proportion.

@@jaggirl If you’ve ever been involved in an active support group, you would know that this so called violent, hooligan culture that is so prevalent in Australian football is just absolutely not true. In fact, I would bet you’d get more antisocial behaviour at AFL/NRL games. And these isolated incidents that do happen, albeit rare, is always only confined to the active support area particularly at the front. Not around families where it occurs in NRL/AFL games.

I love how the police guy says it's only young males at football rather than families and that's why they are dangerous. However in the last 3 years there have been more incidents of violence in afl and nrl then there are in football. Also the majority of fans at football in Australia are family's. If he wants to make a public comment like that he should do his research first. Sadly no one in the Australian media likes and embraces football and it's culture. This is why we feel opresed as football fans.

Alienation and suffocation of active support in Australia is what led football to become stale and what it is today. I used to take pride in doing away days with my team supporters and want to do every away day every year, these days I don't even feel like attending a home game, as that's how stale and sanitised it's become, and yes I want my team to win but it's not the same. None of that heaving atmosphere that drew the neutral to a game. I had brought an enormous amount of neutrals that had never been to a football match, who then would message me every week about coming along, and some even traveling interstate due to that infectious raw element of atmosphere. And I'll always say this, with a mediocre standard of game in this country, the largest draw card was always going to be active support, if someone like myself who's traveled the entire world watching football is struggling to attend that draconian sanitised product in person, how would a neutral feel? A fellow mate summed it up perfectly with this "It used to be such a buzz. Getting a train into the city by 11am for beers all day. Rivals were in town, pubs were packed, streets were overtaken, everything was organised, and you hadn’t even seen a football been kicked yet. Banners, tifos, pyro, flags, kids not snapchatting everything. They were great times. Our Atmosphere made the football what it was. Once everything has been taken away and fans have been banned, you’re left with this. Stale, boring, repetitive and predictable football along with over authoritarian governing."

That's so sad to hear...Here in Sweden the football level of the domestic league is also really low, but the fans of especially the big city clubs are what make it worth following at all. Here they also have done a lot of bad treatment towards supporters but at least not as bad as it seems to be there, seeing this and reading your comment.

It's nothing like it was in the 80s. It was a great atmosphere. A lot of the changes in the game have made it soft and less enjoyable. I know some rules were made to benefit the players from being badly hurt. But the rest have turned it too soft. There was nothing wrong with the odd smack in the mouth..my opinion In saying that, I'm talking about rugby league. That's my game. But it's no different. Like you said it was the atmosphere, even the build up before the game. It's all gone now. Our children will never experience, nor have those great memories. You seem to have more passionate fans though. There's a lot of money involved nowadays. I suspect that has a lot to do with things.

I'll never forget the time, my friends and I from The Cove were detained in a small police room under SCG Stadium. They made us take out our ID's and they went through each of us at a time, saying it was a warning. A warning because people went under our tifo and didn't follow the instructions. 30-40 mins after detaining us, we got kicked out of the stadium. The club got involved and supported us. Due to our mistreatment the club decided we will never have games there again.

Active support has been dying in this country since around 2015 and its a real shame. Active support is what separated "soccer", from AFL and NRL, but fans have been mistreated by the FFA and clubs themselves. A lot of games seem to have little to no atmosphere at all, a "big blue" semi-final between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory was attended by only 17,000 people, previously we've had 50,000 at a regular season Victory v Sydney game. It's a shame to see this happen and hopefully something happens to improve the situation or else it seems that the league could fold

There needs to be a full documentary about this. The game of football in Australia has been politicised and beaten up by the media and other codes because most of the Australian population don't have a clue on the culture of football. Active supporter bases even have a set of strict rules to be more 'family friendly'

Its interesting that when flares are lit when an AFL team win their competition its totally fine. In some media reports it was labelled as exciting and fans celebrating. Typical conservative Australian media. Complete double standards and in some cases discriminating. I personnaly don't like flares being lit inside stadiums but the absolute bias in coverage is typical of the media here and the ignorance of the police.

There is no real difference in background for someone who goes to watch Huddersfield Town as someone who goes to watch Huddersfield Giants whilst it's completely different in Australia. Football copped decades of outright hostility from Anglo Australia stemming from thinly veiled racism that it ended up developing it's own fan culture that was heavily influenced from countries where people migrated from. That's why don't see this style of support at NRL games because it developed organically within Football and would feel completely foreign for fans of other sports.

But flares are crossing a dangerous (and pretty crappy looking) line. Having said that, I do feel a little bit of sympathy for this guy as he seems to be sorry for what he did, and he obviously loves football. But bloody hell, what was he thinking...?
