Asia's Biggest Rivalry | Kolkata Derby | COPA90 Showcase

The Kolkata Derby is a classic Nativist vs Immigrant rivalry, much like the Old Firm derby. Played out in the City of Joy - Kolkata, India, this is the biggest game in India's footballing calendar.
The rivalry between the two clubs; Mohun Bagan A.C. - a club of the natives of the city, and East Bengal - a club of the refugees who moved to Kolkata from the region now Bangladesh, divides the city not only on derby day but also with respect to their cultural and food habits in everyday life.
While the fan culture has been traditional for a large portion of the almost 100 year derby, over the last 6 years a growing ultras culture has brought in a new dimension to this rivalry.

@@olmadevlogs no hate brother but u need to professionalize that passion the reason because Kolkata football gets is due to a proper structure more 250 clubs play in Kolkata through varying divisions and then there are organized district leagues in all of them including women's,there needs to be reason why a certain state has won 32 santosh trophies(football's ranji trophy) and 14 times runners up so that's 46 times in final of the 72 times it has happened,Assam undoubtedly has immense passion for the game but they just need professionalize it.The thing which u told about entire village watching village teams is what happens here too.BTW,curious to know how many santosh titles Assam has won over the years(no hate,just curious).Cheers

Being a Bangaal my first Derby experience was in 1996 Fed Cup semi, where we smashed Bagan 4-1. My dad was my "teacher" when it came to Derby and East Bengal. Uptp 2013 all actions and trivia was on my fingertips. Then dad passed away. Derby didn't feel the same without him. Watching it alone didn't make me go crazy. But, Then somehow it all changed this year. The old colors are out and dusted. This time it's once again me and the Derby madness. Egiye cholo East Bengal. P.S. Been a LFC fan since 1999. Robbie Fowler as gaffer makes it more special.

As a passionate lover of Bengal football, I feel that no infrastructure, no junior team building, no investment but infinite egoism and complacency of the club authorities have put Bengali football culture to a state of misery, where, it had a truly inspiring spirit even 20 years ago. A little factual correction: East Bengal was founded and always based in Calcutta, now Kolkata. It was never a part of Bangladesh. It was formed long before partition. Back then, East Bengal and West Bengal was determined by Eastern and Western side of the Podda river. It had nothing to do with immigrants because Bengal was one. The people from the eastern side of Podda who were living in Kolkata formed this club to represent their culture. However, partition happened and mass migration from East Bengal happened and it became a club supported by immigrants. But its history had nothing to do with immigrants neither was it based anywhere besides Kolkata.

Mohun Bagan has a huge number of Muslim fans too, who are natives of West Bengal. These are Bengali clubs.
