You forgot to mention one of the most important pieces to that year, and that was when Max Pacioretty shoved Chara after the OT goal in Montreal. That sparked the February 9th, 2011 brawl game, and made the incident that much more emotional

I'm a lifelong Bruins fan who was watching every game back then. Thornton was never put on the ice to try to bait someone into a fight. Julien just did not employ him that way. There was no need. And of course his ice time was going to decrease throughout the series when more scoring was necessary. Besides that, as a fan, the rivalry at that time was magical. All the ups and downs, the pure hatred, the skills and the villains on both sides. Pure magic!

When you think of 'dirty' NHL hits this isn't usually the first to come to mind.. and probably isn't the most egregious in intent, but it is still one of the grossest hits I have ever seen. It is laughable that a scenario in which the POLICE had to investigate warranted no discipline from the NHL.
