The Monopoly that you know and love is a knock-off. The original game is a story of passion and persistence of a woman who simply wanted to bring attention to the harms of monopolies, only to have it stolen away by a man who became a millionaire.

One interesting fact: there are two ways to play "Landlords game". One way is the traditional monopoly way. The other way is a "georgist way" where the rent goes to a public fund and divides equally between players. The game ends when the poorest player becomes twice wealthier than he was when game started.

The irony is monopolies are a product of regulations. Regulations make competition by small businesses difficult and create the monopolies they purport to combat.
@matthewjeffrey9190

Not exactly true - some regulations encourage monopolies - some regulations encourage competition. Its on policy vision what happens. Of course, you get the heavy deregulation of terms like accountability measures, transparency measures, etc while increased regulations that only benefit firms already in oligopoly cartels or monopolies. It's a selective deregulation, selective regulation to destroy unions and prop up certain firms.

As soon as the Parker Brothers found out that Charles Darrow was a crook, they simply should have done the same deal (Monopoly, not the Landlord's Game) with Elizabeth Magie. It would have been okay for Elizabeth to steal the few changes Charles had brought to the game knowing that she was responsible for 99% of it. Sadly, I know it didn't happen that way because Elizabeth was a woman and the Parker Brothers would rather still deal with a crook. Given the times, it's impressive what she was able to accomplish. By the way, her last name "Magie" means "Magic" in French. What she accomplished was truly magical. Everybody's heard of Monopoly!

How ironic that the inventor of a game meant to warn people of the evils of monopolies would apply to the patent office for a monopoly on her invention. And then others were applying to the copyright office for monopolies on their own versions of the game and quibbling over who should ultimately be able to monopolize the game. It's almost as if we don't actually need monopolies to promote science and useful arts like the Constitution implies we do.

But if you were insulting the original creator of true monopoly/Landlords game i'd say it would be fair game because sure she is monopolizing it to warn people of the dangers of monopoly but i'd say its pretty fair game Hypocriticism but A Good Lesson Of The dangers of monopoly I'd really think its fair game to be honest

Darrow had the patent US2026082A, granted in 1935, which was well after the expiry of Magie's patent, US748,626 of 1904. There must be some novel aspect of the Darrow game that allowed it to be patented, and that could be the basis of the Parker Brother's game's success. No one "silenced" her. She sold her games with her husband, but was an anti-capitalist, and thus not able to capably focus on value creation and marketing of her idea, because it contradicted her explicit value code.

Just a joke, but this girl has bad RNG. To be serious though, this is a great video.

I'll be a dissenting voice here. Magee invented a tedious game with zero appeal that virtually no one wanted to play. What it needed was a lot of serious game development, which Magee neglected and Parker Brothers didn't want to pay for the 'privilege' to do for her. In the end, ordinary people across the east coast became the playtesters and developers of the game. One of those playtesters recognized it for what it had become, invested time and his own money in it, whipped up a bunch of compelling artwork, and came up with a winner.
