What one thing people forget about the original deal is that Tampa Bay area hasn't seen a Major Hurricane in 100 years. On top of Milton, this was a 1 in 1000 year rainfall event. There is a metric for this. That event is quantified as 8 inches of rain in 3 hour. St. Pete got 9 inches in 3 hours, 5 of those inches they received in single hour prior to the roof falling. This wasn't just a hurricane, this was a hurricane Tampa never seen before in the modern era.
@nickmalin3601Ай бұрын
Exactly. Milton was the first direct hit to Tampa Bay in over 100 years and actually was predicted to be a little stronger when it made landfall. The timing of the hurricane, plus new St Pete council members, makes for a tough situation for the Rays to be in.

I know using the threat of relocation to get shiny new stadium deals is a crucial tactic for the owners to keep their franchise values up, but with the ongoing A's debacle you'd think the MLB would be trying to tamp down any nonsense for the time being. If the MLB gets too much of reputation for being an untrustworthy partner, sooner or later some team is going to overplay their hand in one city and find out they aren't welcome anywhere else.

@stphinkleАй бұрын
They are both American League teams. They would NOT play each other in the world series. Usually the World Series is the final game of the Champions of the American League and the National League. They might be able to play together in the series just before the World Series called the American League Championship Series if they are the two final American League Teams. Personally if it got to that series and it ended up being Tampa Bay vs Sacramento, they might rent another stadium for the series games if the crowds are expected to get very high. For example, the Sacramento As could temporarily use Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or another field to accommodate a bigger crowd. The Rays could host those games in Miami, Atlanta, or even Dallas or Houston if needed for a bigger crowd. Moving a game once or for a small series is not unheard of, as well as playing with a smaller crowd for a big game. If you look, the 2020 World Series was played in Dallas, Texas, at Globe Life Field due to public health restrictions during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and it was the Tampa Bay Rays vs Los Angeles Dodgers. The 2020 World Series= didn't have a crowd that much larger than what Steinbrenner Field could hold, as the capacity was reduced to 11,500 due to social distancing.

I remember when baseball was expanding in the 90s and all the smart people were like "baseball and Florida are a perfect match." Yeah, right. Like football in Nevada where the Raiders always are butchered by the "away crowd." The Rays players deserve better (as do the As). Thing is, players want to play in Florida bc it is good weather for their fams in winter (so no 2 homesteads), and $0 state income tax. So leaving Florida for the north seems counter productive (Canadian taxes will always make it harder to compete for FA, as Canadian hockey teams). To be fair, Tampa rarely gets hit with direct hurricanes, and there are higher priorities to address (like people's homes and schools) in the area post Milton. But jeez is this a bad look. But that's what you get with no revenue sharing. Think the Red Sox, Dodgers or Yankees care what happens in Oakland and TB? No skin off their billions. Just make it a shorter charter flight on road trips. Great catch on rainouts. That's going to make inter league games a nightmare next season

The Florida Suncoast Dome (now Tropicana Field) opened in the late 80s to try and lure a sports team to Pinellas County. For those saying they should move to Montreal or Oakland, do you realize that MLB would have to move around other teams and even move an NL team into the AL. Then there's logistics with travel and availability. Won't the Rays be on the west? In order to keep that 15 AL\15 NL, one NL team on the east has to switch to the AL. Divisions will have to be realigned. Why do you think the A's are moving to Vegas and not to Charlotte? So yeah, yall better think about things like this before giving a knee jerk reaction on where the Rays should move to. BTW, I'm an O's fan.

The host states that repairs to the roof of Tropicana would cost $23 million. Then he added that the figure would go up to $56 million by 2026 and that much of the cost would be covered by insurance or FEMA reimbursements. So why is the taxpayer asked to fork over more money by passing a bond issue? Does anyone with a brain listen to this information? $23 million is less than the salary of one superstar for a season's play. An MLB team somehow comes up with the money to pay the players. The costs of roof repairs are a pittance in a team's budget. And if the Rays don't want to pay the cost themselves, then MLB and the other franchises could easily pitch in $2 million per franchise and fix the roof themselves. Why should the middle class fund repairs to make billionaire owners richer still? The wealthy are laughing at us.

No, I’m sorry but the location of St. Petersburg and the Tropicana stadium (itself), being shit for the team are two very poor opinions and excuses from ppl who just repeat what they hear. St. Petersburg is centrally located in the Metropolis and the stadium itself was built in 1990 and looks and feels absolutely clean. The land around it was never developed or used wisely. The roof was nice for games when it cooled off and great when storms and rain came. It’s unfortunate that it was damaged but it was caused by a hurricane, not 20mph winds. The longevity of the roof should be looked at, anyone from Florida knows how the heat and salt air takes its toll on everything. Putting the stadium in Tampa will not attract ppl from Orlando. No one there is going to do that drive. You might attract ppl from Lakeland, but they will do so at the risk of losing fans who will now have to drive even further. And if you want to build a fan base, you don’t earn it by constantly complaining and threatening to leave. You have to earn a fan base and since the rays don’t win enough or show happiness or support for their area…it’s kind of hard for fans to. I guess they feel that slinging mud is a better option. You lost a fan base when your owner started with that nonsense of putting you in Montreal. Why should TampaBay fans be committed to you…St Pete fans especially?

I grew up in the trop I was going to games since 2003 when I was a kid. Ive always loved it and never understood the hate... It has AC and it does what its supposed to do? I genuinely don't see the problem with it or why people need to have a multi billion dollar stadium to watch a baseball game. But that's just my opinion a native Floridian who's been going to games almost since they started playing

I'm with you,I'm a life long Floridian and I love the Trop,only go to a couple games a year,but I've never had a bad time at a Rays game

Why don’t they just use it as a open air ball park?😅

Should be in Tampa not St. Petersburg. They’re the Tampa bay rays not the St. Petersburg rays.

Heres my question do Rays fans want them to stay in Tampa? Cause its hard to tell

St. Pete not Tampa, and according to attendance St Pete never was the be draw for crowds because not all the fans live in that city.

If a tree falls in Tropicana Field and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound? That was always a joke I liked to crack about the Trop's abysmal history of attendance, playing off on the old philosophical paradox a bit (just with a Baseball twist). But if the Rays did move, and Tropicana doesn't have Baseball anymore, I guess I lose my running joke. That makes me a touch sad I must say. Still, would have happened eventually. Tropicana days were numbered anyway in any scenario. Ah, the Trop. It reminds of a Urinal stand. Servicable, but still damn ugly.

As a Rays fan, the problem is and always has been Stu. He needs to sell the team.

Tampa bay is an incredible market that can still make the team lots of money but they NEED TO MAKE IT MORE ACCESSIBLE 🤦♂️ if they don't get their ish💩 together they might lose their team just like the poor A's

I like tropicana it's nice inside
@1200hobos11 күн бұрын
Just go. Remember when you tried to use Wade Boggs to gain traction? People have wisely rejected your team. It smelled fishy. Tampa Bay is giving Las Vegas a run for it's money in sleeze.

These people are ridiculous and petty don't they realize that this is nobody's fault freaking hurricane. Can't these people negotiate with each other figure something out. No just us Rays fans are going to get screwed

50 mil to fix the roof is nothing to mlb. Let the team which is worth billions of dollars pay for it. Or leave and go elsewhere. Sick of leagues being so cheap and demanding so much money from the public just so they can get rich

ballpark was never even maintained by the owner, you want this guy to own your pro sports team still? This situation exists due to the owner.
