How Maglite flashlights are designed and made.
Since 1979 Mag Instruments have made amazing, durable flashlights which have become a staple for military and law enforcement around the world. Every Maglite is proudly made in America with its headquarters and main factory in Ontario, California, just outside Los Angeles.
The MAG story:
Born in New York City during the Great Depression, Tony Maglica returned to his mother’s homeland of Croatia to be raised close to her family. Tony escaped communist Yugoslavia just after WWII and arrived back in the USA in 1950. Here he set out to make the most of his training as an experimental machinist. Tony spoke very little English, but learned quickly during the many odd jobs he did when he first arrived in America. Tony worked around the clock but still struggled to save any money. Finally he managed to scrounge up $125, the down-payment on his first lathe. So began Tony Maglica's quest for the American Dream: There in his one-man machine shop in a Los Angeles area garage, he knew that his days of working for other people were behind him. He was, at last, in business for himself.
Maglica began by manufacturing precision parts for industry, aerospace, and the military. He quickly earned a reputation for quality, efficiency and ingenuity. Mag Instrument was eventually incorporated in 1974. By that time, Maglica had clearly demonstrated his innovative techniques for cutting production costs and increasing quality. Maglica established a hands-on leadership style, as well as a core business philosophy of combining superior quality of all Mag products with unsurpassed customer service.
As his company grew, Maglica set his sights on designing and manufacturing a new and improved flashlight. Initially targeted for the public safety sector, the Maglite® flashlight was introduced in 1979.
Often referred to as "A Work of Art That Works®", the Maglite® and Mini Maglite® flashlights have been honored by the Japan Institute of Design and by the Museum for Applied Art in Germany. Fortune and Money magazines ranked Mag Instrument® products among the top 100 products that "America makes best". In 1996, the Wall Street Journal referred to the Maglite® flashlight as "the Cadillac of flashlights", and quoted then-CEO of Apple Computer Gilbert F. Amelio as saying he wanted Apple to be "essentially the Maglite® of computers".

Very interesting. Ive used the same mag for work nearly everyday for 6 years. Its been with me in the rain, snow, ice, under car hoods, moldy basements, off roading, and years of night fishing. At the end of the day it stands next to my late father's maglite from the mid 80s which still works. He himself used for 10 years as local PD until his passing.

4:43 In 1981 I was working as an engineer and had access to a machine shop. When I noticed the tail cap was larger than the bulb, I milled out a space and put a spare bulb in the hole. I subsequently had to send in one of my Mags for a different reason. So I sent them a letter with the light, because I wanted to make sure I got MY tail cap back and I suggested they make them that way. They gave me no acknowledgement and took the idea. Yes, the tailcap spare bulb was MY IDEA. I’d love to get some credit...

I now run a Mini Maglite AA with an optically pure, ground glass lens, a 120 Lumens LED conversion, lithium batteries and an ESD (Emergency Safety Devices) Glass Breaker Tail Cap. It lives in an open top belt holster, always available when needed. A Photon Freedom Micro Light Covert Nose model, necklace worn, provides useful, less bright light as required. Maglite forever changed the world of personal torches (flashlights).

Maglite was a game changer when it came out, but technical advancement has left them behind. Other brands are brighter, smaller, more rugged, and water resistant. I wish Maglite would come out with a 2.0 version with better designed reflector, higher performance LED, and better moisture/water sealing. I own 3 Maglites that I bought years ago. Over the past 10 years I have purchased several newer flashlights and none of them have been Maglites. I do like Maglite, but the need to catch up with the competition.

@@ace_of_fives2744 I have three maglites and like them, even though they are obsolete. I also have several streamlight products, and have been impressed with the quality and performance. They use CREE LEDs, which are very bright and durable. The reflectors give good light coverage (hot spot in the middle with lower intensity surround). Some streamlights use alkali batteries, others use lithium, and some can use both. The only thing I don't like about streamlight is that some of their products are made in china. If that matters to you, check the product details on their website. Surefire is also a maker of high quality/performance flashlights. I think most, if not all of their products are made in the US.

I wouldn't call it technical advancement in a sense Modern flashlights keep getting worse *and worse* battery life because of their obsession with tiny batteries(laws of physics: low capacity) and their mistreatment of lumen count as a gimmick without proper cooling It's really dumb when something that runs on 3AAs or 4AAAs is only rated for 20 minutes of runtime

I admire the quality of every MAGLITE product very much. MAGLITE torch has great anodized Aluminium body and good, strong and heavy bezel that’s common to all Battery configurations, which can be also used against dangerous perpetrators, a weapon so as to say. The bezel needs to be rotated numerous time to remove from the body, until one’s patience comes to a stand still. Good plastic plain lens, that can easily be scratch and cracked. Fantastic tail cap and spring and a spare incandescent bulb encased in sponge inside it. Wonderful engineering, even though enormously; an overkill. It has an ON/OFF switch. Strange switch, which has about 20 plus minute parts. The positive supply to the incandescent bulb is through a high tension steel spring, which also assists focusing the output and also reduce current. It doesn’t matter or does it? One needs to obtain greater education (preferably a PhD) to disassemble the switch assembly, as it’s quite intricate and difficult to dislodge the nice switch. The question is to use or not to use a 6mm Allen key or TORX... but it’s a great design. To release the TORX fastner, from the switch, one needs TORX key which is not available, for that one MUST buy the whole switch! from the company costing about $14 plus tax plus postage. It’s a nice arrangement. (The MAGLITE TORX key is a proprietary design with a slender stalk which goes through the switch hole, which is not available in the market !) The output..... err the output from MAGLITE... is not as one’d desire from the greatly designed product. May be, way back ancient times, such illumination would have been satisfactorily sufficient. But MAGLITE is a great product that can be modified greatly by incorporating many products to enhance the Torch (flashlight) Proudly, I possess about 8 MAGLITEs of different configurations. Even, a lovely and heavily modified 1 Cell* MAGLITE that has a 1000 Lumens LED emitter, powered by LGGBMEOT2170* Li-Ion Battery. The result is many fold brighter throw (output) than a 6D MAGLITE Torch. *21700 Battery is the newly designed Li-Ion battery used in newer models of Battery Cars. Recently MAGLITE, realizing that it needs to upgrade the great product, came up with nice low level LED emitters. Nice. But, still far behind the other similar products in the market. To conclude, MAGLITE is a great product. I like it, because it can be modified to suit my ambition, desire and requirement. Thank you MAGLITE inverters and manufacturers. MAGLITE is a great American product to be proud of.

Well, there will be many flashlight options on the market, but Maglite is like the king of style and functionality, although it took a while to get to LED technology and they have not yet released inspection versions or with an orange peel diffuser for have an even light pattern, I think Maglite makes its products with a lot of quality, and they have a very beautiful design that to date continues to fall in love, although in its latest versions they already use very powerful LEDs, they still need to offer a solution in batteries that is already coming factory, as a rechargeable lithium battery pack and that can continue to use the battery format of a lifetime or something like that.

Haven't had one for a long time. I think it's one of the best flashlights, but I prefer a headlamp and some super small flashlight combo. A headlamp is just so much handier, and if you need to check light in some weird place, small LED will do just fine. You can have one in your keychain for example.

I'm lucky enough to own a very early 1979/80 3 D-cell 'variebeam' Maglite, from way back when the patents were still pending! Still going strong, and upgraded with an LED bulb and glass lens. The only scars it carries, is internal corrosion from a leaking battery, but still works great!

I love maglites, have a round 30 or so, even buy non working ones, they can usually be stripped, cleaned and working again in a matter of minutes. If they are too far gone(very rare), they get broken for parts.

Great light sticks! Don’t leave your batteries in them if your not going to use the light for awhile as batteries corrode and you can’t get the batteries out.. I like the new led mags but now the mags have more competition.

Excellent flashlight. I have several different sizes. I read the manual that says to rub a little vaseline on the threads for even more corrosion resistance. I just wish the L.E.D. conversion kits were cheaper. They make a maglite almost perfect.

For years I only bought Mag Lights. I'm a field service technician (self-employed). My 2AA Mini-Mags started having an issue with flicker. Flickering is very annoying when I'm trying to see inside dark machines. I had to bang on them to get them to stay on. Replacing batteries did not help. Replacing the lamp did not help. Cleaning contacts helped for a short time. Eventually, I gave up. The Mini-Mags went in the trash. I still have the 3D Mag Lights and they're working fine. They have been upgraded to LEDs. They never flicker. For my field service tool bag I now use a flashlight from "O-Light". It's very bright (1000 lumens) and absolutely NO FLICKER! To be fair, the rechargeable O-Light is a lot more expensive. I paid about $80 for it - online. To me it's worth it to avoid that nasty flicker.

I also have a couple of mini mags led that have issues of flickering. They dont always have a constant beam of light. I gotta bang them in order to have a staeady light. I believe it has something to do with the head for turning it on. Thats why the bigger mags with a side switch dont have that problem.

My favourite feature of my Maglite is that is great at denting skulls. Normally only one full swing is required but occasionally an additional whack seals the deal. I love the sound of the crunch as it contacts the cranium. It's almost addictive. Definately not a mini-Maglite fan. Prefer the D cell size.

Great build quality on MagLite but light output is weak compared to led lenser I have both MagLite and Led Lenser both built to high standards but MagLite are trading on past reputation and the fact they was once a Front runner. I will say the Led Lenser did cost about 3 times as much and uses 4 AAA batteries as Apposed to 2 AA batteries.
