This is one of those stories that leaves you scratching and shaking your head. You know damn good and well that Vader could have easily snapped and Force pushed and choked the whole crowd and engulfed all in blaster fire, and any leftovers Light Saber attacked. Vader has battled whole armies by himself many a time under the empire's employment and he's destroyed their home planets with hardly any effort. That crowd was nothing. The only reason Vader chose not to engage was because Luke was literally standing right there and Vader wanted and needed him. Cutting each and every one of those people down would have driven his son further and further away from him.

Also, I'm sure Vader was mad when the Star Destoyer blew up, but then realized someone gave him an excuse to pilot a vessel by himself. Vader was probably thinking of how to make Luke realize how many people *were* on the Death Star, and why he hated its existence, as well as why you shouldn't just blow it and its crew up to get what you want.

Ben Skywalker granted he isn’t invincible, but he’s not fighting an entire planet, they’re not all there. That was maybe a few hundred to a few thousand unarmed, undisciplined, and untrained civilians, odds are most would run for it after a handful of em died. Maybe 1 in every 50 of the crowd in a single city had an actual weapon, Vader has taken on far worse odds and come out without a scratch

Even with Vader's power increased to what the prequels, new books, and such depict it as, he would have still struggled against that many in a ground fight. Also, he probably didn't want to risk Luke getting killed in the chaos. Vader could have easily been facing more than a 100,000 in the city alone. There were no dams for him to break or anything. "Some" (20% of 100,000 is still 20,000 people trying to shoot you simultaneously) of the natives had blasters. So even the "more powerful" (really he is as powerful as he always is since he doesn't need to be the weaker version to hesitate) would not be interested in that fight, even if he could win. Basically, the princess was right to stand down after Vader indicated he would withdraw, and Vader was right to withdraw. Besides the Empire still needs people to mine ore when it inevitably returned.

@Skooma Cat At a minimum, Vader is facing the equivalent of an entire sports stadium all at once. Considering they were willing to rush stormtroopers, throw bottles at them, etc I think they had the will to fight. Also, though blind at the time, luke had demonstrated the ability to block weapons fire with his lightsaber and also punch targets successfully (he single handedly took down the princess's "kidnappers" while blind using just his lightsaber and fists). Vader was at a severe handicap here. His capital ship, an interdictor star destroyer, had already been destroyed, all of his stormtroopers were dispatched, and the entire planet was now ticked off at him (Vader tortured their ruler to death and the journalist droid managed to get the king's last words as well as what Vader had done to him to the citizens). Yet they back off from confronting Vader, despite the princess's second in command thinking they could capture him (the princess reprimanded him for thinking this). Vader did not want that fight, while the princess knew that Vader would still slaughter them. Vader is willing to get his hands dirty, but he has troops for a reason.

I knew that Vader would still demolish them. Just like how Palpatine killed the guards outside of Maul and Savage Opress' lair without any effort in any real sense, Vader's use of the force alone would be enough to reduce the numbers of the population exponentially....... I expected nothing less of Vader here but in most cases, you have to play your cards smartly and correctly. This was something that Grievous should've done when he was confronted by an army of Gungans in "Star Wars: The Clone Wars." He comments section is true about Vader. A whole planet virtually going up against Vader. Vader: "Sounds fair enough to me. I like those odds." Vader is way stronger in Legends but not invincible. Your comparing this with the Squadron trap he was in Canon. It was only a squadron with tanks and few Y-Bombers. This Time it is an entire planet with a fleet on the orbit and an army on the ground all aiming at him. Vader is powerful and more than capable of destroying entire planets in Legends but he is not invincible nor invulnerable. Yes he could have won against them but he wouldn’t have won unharmed also Luke was there. Vader didn’t want his son to see him even more as a monster
