How a previous owner SCREWED UP a 7.3L Powerstroke thermostat installation

There aren't many jobs on a 7.3 that are easier but not only did the PO overtighten the small housing bolts until one broke, but they had zero understanding of how a perimeter thermostat seal works.

So RTV was the gasket and it sealed perfectly with one less fastener😄. I’m not wasting money on gaskets next time😁. Of course it will leak if you do it, Murphy’s law.

0:57 How do we know the bolt didn't shear off on removal? I've seen it happen a few times, always on a Ford. Steel threads in cast aluminum don't mix, a favorite thing that Ford does. Please show us performing your remedy there. The kid did fine with what he had, how long it would've lasted I don't know.

We know it didn't shear on removal because there was no removal. It's a new water pump, there were no bolts in it. The young man did enough to get it together but would have done better reading some instructions.

Make sure you replace it with the correct style thermostat. There is a long and a short version. I believe it depends on the brand/style of water pump.
