@@binjalan6777 Depending on condition the going rate for an Midnight Purple 2 V-Spec right now seems to be US$150-200K because the word is out now that they can be imported to the US. Other V-Specs that aren't yet importable tend to be cheaper but R34 prices have gotten so insane now that even the more common ones are in the six figures.

The only ''problem'' i see about this car is the constant fear your feel when driving it around, worrying constantly about someone smashing into your car or leaving it parked somwhere without worrying or getting stolen.. normal for such an iconic car.

True, that's a worry for me! I've gotten used to being careful from driving my R35 but it's still a concern. The gawkers and stalkers worry me the most because you're always concerned about an inattentive driver doing something dumb or some stranger following you home...but the hassle is worth it to own such an awesome car :)

Yeah, you guys in Oz were lucky to get these cars so much earlier than here in the States. The difficulty of getting them versus the high demand in this market is the key reason prices have gone so insane. It's nice to see the cars get the appreciation but not nice to see most fans get priced out of ever owning them :(

Beautiful MNP! FYI for those who were wondering. There are exactly 16 R34 GTR’s currently known to have been imported and legalized by MotoRex, that number could possibly go up to 20. All those cars were Bond released by the NHTSA and are the only Truly Federally Legal R34 GTR’s imported to the US with no mileage restrictions. Show and display eligible models like the 99’ MNP II model and 02’ Mspec Nür R34 GTR’s Are also NHTSA APPROVED. Those are currently your only 3 LEGAL options. All else are bullshit, can’t import them as kits. Look what happened to Kaizo, the reason why there is currently a flood of these MNP II R34 GTR show and display cars currently is because the 99’ model turned 21 years old which makes them Exempt from EPA compliance and needing a functioning OBD-II system.

Entertaining and informative! So if I want to import a car that is already on the show or display list, and it is currently less than 21 years old, do I still need to do the emissions work? Can I bring it into the US and store it until it turns 21?

In order to first import a car you actually want to drive you have to satisfy BOTH the DOT and EPA requirements so it's not an option to store it in the US until it hits a certain age. You can store it outside the US but if you keep it in the US without having done the appropriate import process then it's illegal and can be seized at any point. Basically if it's Show or Display eligible you have to do the emissions work to get it to comply with EPA regs if it's not 21 years old yet or you wait until it's 21 and then bring it in.

Well if we're talking sleek and nimble AND fast at that time the top contenders IMHO would be the NSX and the FD RX-7. The Supra, 300ZX, and 3000GT were all relatively big and relied more on power output for their speed while the NSX and the FD were more focused on low weight and handling. If history had been different though Nissan might have had their own mid-engine lightweight legend if the MID4-II had made it to production. 300ish hp, ATTESSA AWD, and 3086 pound curb weight - that would have been a beast!

Not automatically. It would have to be applied for with DOT to determine if they think it's significant enough for entry. Just being rare doesn't mean it qualifies. The MP2 qualifies because it's a limited edition of the first year of the R34, not simply because of the color. The M-Spec Nur qualifies because it's a special edition of the last year of the R34 with only 285 made in total. Unfortunately it's doubtful the V-Spec II Nur would qualify even with the Millennium Jade paint because the V-Spec II Nur wasn't limited to JUST Millennium Jade cars so total production was over 500 examples. DOT told me before that they don't consider color as a determining factor for significance. It's a misconception that the Midnight Purple 2 cars qualified due to the color - it was the fact they were a first-year limited edition of the R34 that qualified them. The color was just incidental to their limited edition nature.

I've been driving stick ever since I first learned to drive so I got used to it pretty quickly. As long as you're well used to driving stick I don't think it's a big learning curve. Honestly the turn signals give me more trouble since the stalk is on the right side on RHD cars so I end up inadvertently turning on the wipers instead by mistake sometimes when I swap between LHD and RHD because of muscle memory lol.

@@ve2430 I think it's pretty certain R34 prices will continue to go up as the 25 year mark approaches. If you look at what happened with the R32 and R33, prices kept going up as they reached 25 years old. The R33 is the least loved of the RB26 trio but prices still spiked when they became importable so logically the R34 being the most hyped of the three and least common will see massive demand. Even now MP2 R34 prices have more than doubled just in the year and a half since I bought mine because word has gotten out that they can be imported to the US relatively easily. The only thing I can see keeping R34 prices from steadily going up would be a massive economic downturn but even that may not be enough since COVID is hitting the global economy bad and prices have still gone up.

Show or Display won't work for a "normal" R34 since the car needs to be considered historically or technologically significant AND it needs to be rare (i.e. less than 500 made) before DOT will consider it for approval. Basically only the rare and significant models have a hope of approval. The MP2 qualifies because it's a limited edition of the first year of the R34 and less than 300 were made. The M-Spec Nur was a limited edition of the LAST year and less than 300 were made so that was approved.

Any car that's in running condition has to be 25 years old at the time of import to be considered legal unless it has a special exemption like Show or Display. Storing it until it turns 25 isn't an option since it has to ALREADY be legal to import when it first comes in to the country. Even if you somehow managed to bring it in without valid papers and then store it until it turned 25 it doesn't just automatically become legal once that age limit is met. It would have to be re-exported then brought back in to get the proper papers and therefore risking the Feds finding out about it being an illegal car in the first place. It's kind of like illegal immigration - just because you manage to stay in a country for long enough without proper papers doesn't automatically grant you legal citizenship. There are separate laws for importing a non-running car for display or as a collectible but they're strict about the car being non-driveable. If you then changed your mind and wanted to make it driveable again you'd have to export and re-import to make it legal otherwise the Feds can seize it to be crushed or auctioned off.

The short answer is: no. The full answer is: Show or Display isn't about registering a car as a "show car" - it's a Federal determination that a particular car model, version, or example is historically or technologically significant enough AND rare enough to be allowed to be imported because it's of interest to the general public. Basically you can't just say "I'm bringing this car in just as a show car" and import whatever you want. You have to prove to the Feds the car is special enough to be given an exemption from standard import rules. The Midnight Purple 2 R34 meets the criteria because it's a limited edition of the very first model year of the R34. GT-Ts are too common and don't have the tech or historical significance to meet the requirements. In fact, the R34 GT-T is on the "Disapproved" list of the NHTSA meaning somebody tried to apply for it and got rejected.

Well, aside from the cost of buying the car itself there were the customs fees that totaled about $5K, transport from Canada to Arizona - about $1.7K, and then the DMV was cheap at only about $300-400 bucks (registration would have been much more expensive if I'd bought from an importer because then I'd have had to pay Arizona sales tax. I did have the chance to buy the car in 2016 for less but in the end I probably got a better deal because the previous owner did price it higher but the extra money was offset by the full Z-tune front end he had put on and the fresh paint job he had done to get everything matching :)

All good I love too give my input and feed back when it counts on great content, and thank you so much, I’m definitely happy too finally own a jdm legend of my own, been obsessed with them ever since my neighbour as a young kid had a black type x 180sx that had been tasteful modified and I fell in love with it instantly and over the years just grew more and more obsessed with jdm cars and the like, years passed and recently got mine as the timing was right, had the money and the car was for a deal too good to pass so bought it, now in the process of doing a minor restoration on it & few tlc things and it’ll be lovely and is a one of 1443 made in the 1k5 two tone, is a yellow silver/ champagne with the great lower, it’s definitely no r34 gtr but one day I’ll be in the position to obtain one but for now I’ll keep my silvia till I can get a r34 as I have no plan of getting rid of the silvia, & definitely will have a watch of your older videos! Thanks for your kind comments! Yes, the car is limited to 2500 miles a year under the Show or Display exemption - I just didn't mention it because the video was already kind of long. I know a lot of people kind of rag on that limitation but the car isn't meant to be a daily driver anyway and I think of it this way - Better to have just 2500 miles a year on the dream car you can have than zero miles a year on the one you can't. :)

I totally agree. A rare collectors car like this shouldn’t be driven more than 2500 miles in my eyes. I’d rather take it to car shows and have some slender Asian dolls adorn it. And open it up at the track. And some years from now you could possibly make your money back or more if you needed the cash

Here in the US a foreign-made car has to be at least 25 years old to be imported regardless of whether it's LHD or not. Show or Display is a special exemption for rare and exceptional cars.

This is a 150/200k car. A plain gtr probably will be 100/135 for a nice clean one. Probably could find one that is high mileage or wrecked for cheaper.

In 2025 regular R34s will be importable without going through the Show or Display process like I did so it'll be infinitely easier by then. Having said that prices will probably still be very high at that time because a lot of people want these cars so simple supply and demand will drive the prices up. Currently even regular R34 GT-Rs with nothing that special about them (other than being an R34 GT-R lol) are routinely selling in the $70-100K range. Rare ones like the MP2 in my video are now $150-250K cars. You also have to consider the high cost of maintaining and insuring a 25-year old JDM performance car relative to a more normal one. Non-GT-R R34s like the 25GT will give you similar looks and novelty with less performance but also a much more reasonable price tag if you really want an R34 Skyline though.

Yup, the M Spec Nur is eligible but it doesn't have to be in any particular color. Also since it's not yet 21 years old, until 2023 hits you would have to spend tens of thousands of dollars extra plus many months of wait time to get it EPA compliant before importing one. @@SofiaSclafani Millennium Jade is the most common color associated with the M Spec Nur because it was used on the prototype, was exclusive to the M-Spec Nur, and was used for most of the batch, but they also came in four other colors. They only made 285 M Spec Nurs of all colors so they easily make it under the Show or Display cutoff of 500 examples or less. Silica Breath is actually the rarest Nur color but it was also available on non-Nur M-Specs.

Not legally, no - at least until it turns 25 years old. To qualify for a Show or Display exemption like my GT-R the car has to be rare, and technologically or historically significant. Since there weren't any limited edition R34 sedans of significance from Nissan it's a no-go - unless maybe you can find one that was owned and street-raced by the emperor himself and can prove it :)

There was definitely some R34's in the states in 1999 - don't have a clue about the legality of them but for sure know that a car show in Seattle back in the summer of 1999 that I attended, there was a 1999 Bayside Blue GTR and it had Washington state license plates! I remember being in total awe like OMG so gobsmacked seeing it in real life. I kept asking my friend over and over if I was seeing things and I'm not imagining this right, it is for real? He was just as shocked as I was but reassured me it was legit.

People have definitely been bringing them in both legally and illegally for a while now. If that was in 1999 and in Washington I'd have to guess that one was illegally brought in from our friendly neighbors up north - it wouldn't have been that hard back then since the 25 year law was still obscure for most state DMVs. There's a chance it was a legal Motorex car but there were only a dozen or so R34s brought in that way so that's less likely (and technically those weren't imported correctly either lol). Either way you were lucky to see one when they were still new :)

Do you have any recommendations on where to look? Preferably Canada of course, Japan would be a headache but i'm open to it still! It's definitely better the way prices are going and with increasing scarcity to lock in a good car now rather than wait but you'll have to weigh three options: 1) Pay more for an MP2 R34 whose prices have spiked much harder due to being importable already 2) Get a non-importable R34 that's cheaper but you'll need to store for a few years or 3) Wait and get one closer to 2024. Depending on your budget and attachment to a particular version of R34 any one of those are viable options. Sorry for the late reply but I just got back from a vacation trip with family. Anyway, to answer your question - you can buy an R34 now but you'd have to store it outside the US unless it's one of the Show or Display-eligible ones. You couldn't store it in the US because to enter the country legally it has to be legal already to enter at the time you import it. Several people have brought R34s in illegally but they'll never be fully legal unless they get re-exported again and then brought in properly - and to do that they'd have to wait until they turn 25 and risk the Feds getting wise to the car having been illegally imported previously in the process. With the prices of R34s getting so high there are lots of companies currently offering to sell you a car now and then arrange storage in Japan until they can be imported. I know of many people doing the same in Canada.

I can see the reasoning for why the 25 year import ban exists but I wish it were more reasonable. Canada's 15 year limit makes a hell of a lot more sense - not too long but not too short either. Fifteen years is enough to prevent grey market cars stealing sales from legitimate dealers while still not depriving people of desirable foreign-made cars for too long.

I got my R34 when I went to japan imported it myself to Canada (Quebec) made it legal there then drove it in Florida till it becomes legal then I will transfer it. Just have to pay Canada insurance & registration as I have friends there.

Almost certainly no, sorry. To be considered for Show or Display the model has to be rare - less than 500 examples made is considered the cutoff. There were only 282 MP2 R34 V-Spec's made so that's why it qualified. There were some rare versions of the S15 like the Varietta or Autech but then you'd still have to convince the DOT that they have enough historical or technological significance to be considered. The various S15 variants didn't really have extraordinary tech that wasn't common in other vehicles and they're not highly regarded enough historically outside of import fans so they'd be non-starters I'm afraid.

It's very possible it could pass since it would be similar to the R34 M-Spec Nur as the final limited edition for the FD. If the late model JCES Eunos Cosmo could get approval then I don't see why the Type B or C Spirit R couldn't. The Type A would be out because over 500 units were made but if someone were to put in the time and effort for the Type B or C Spirit R's I'd be surprised if it didn't get approved. To make it road legal though you'd have to either wait until 2023 for it to get an EPA waiver or you'd have to pay big money to get it EPA certified.
