How a Roselia made Pokemon History.

Pokemon Competitive Singles in Gen 3 has a long history, and some very creative high level players.
Roselia is perhaps my favourite example of a Low tier Pokemon proving itself extremely useful in a high level match.
Ban Manaphy's excellent Arcanine + Roselia team achieved a convincing victory against Fear, a very formidable opponent, and is one of the most legendary battles in Gen 3 OU History.
Is this insane? Absolutely.

@@bigbrainenergyguy If you're a new player I'd suggest using standard teams until you get a feel for things. I don't think you should try and brute force Niche mons into a team either. Niche Pokemon are often solutions to a problem that you arrive at after many iterations of a team, that compress a lot of options into 1 slot or help in some specific Matchup There's also no shame in using Standard mons and all the top tier mons in Gen 3 are very interesting and variable. That's a bigger reason for why Gen 3 OU is a great metagame, it's fantastic central Pokemon. Yes Tyranitar is on most teams, but you will not see a #1 Pokemon in any other metagame with more moveset and playstyle variety than Tyranitar in Gen 3.

Top tiers aren’t that strong relative to future gens and no stealth rock is a lot of the balance of Gen 3. Damage is a lot lower across the board and with only spikes as a hazard you have more turns to read your opponent vs getting insta swept by a lead with one boost. That said, games with no Tyranitar can be very slow in Gen 3, especially since the two other best mons are really bulky (Blissey and Skarm).

In OU, yes, but in the lower tiers it's actually pretty darn good. Access to spikes and toxic spikes help a lot, natural cure helps it from burns and para and eviolite gen 5 and beyond made it's bulk along with a decent typing pretty bulky and giga drain for healing makes its a decent if not the best spiker in certain formats Edit: I forgot to say that it also has synthesis for reliable healing, so that gives it extra points for allowing it to stay in the field even longer

There's just something so magical about gen 3 competitive. I've played it a lot on ladder, and I can see why there's still gen 3 tourneys being held. It's in that sweep spot of being methodical without also being incredibly slow like gen 2, and powerful but not power crept like gen 4.

Sand Veil is the simple answer, thanks to permanent sand and virtually no other weathers around Cacturne gets a 25% dodge chance constantly (and a sand damage immunity). That combined with leech seed + substitute makes it incredibly uncompetitive as you just fish for misses and wear opponents down

​@@frankcaggiano8282 you are aware of the meta you're talking about, right? Gen 3 OU. The meta where Dragon Dance Salamence with Hidden Power Flying as their STAB move is a valuable late game threat. The meta where Focus Punch isn't just viable, but a legitametly good choice. The meta where chip healing with leftovers on sand immune mons gives them further purpose instead of a bonus. Moltres, Charizard and Breloom weren't even in OU until they rose, at the earliest in Moltres's case, 2020. A pokemon who already has good stats and moves. Now imagine doing discoveries like that on low level mons with little else to offer besides a few unique tools. Meta discoveries take time, Singles or VGC. Pretending that it doesn't because "lol just use high power moves" is mindless

You understand that players are constantly experimenting new sets, EV spreads, or even new coverage moves mons can use? It's not like lower tier mons just get pulled into a tournament for the lols, right? They experiment with shit all the time to get even the smallest edge. Be it because they fill a necessary purpose to fill gaps, or just have secondary functions you sacrifice other potential uses for. Lower power moves/pokemon aren't the be all end all on both ends of viability, no matter how many times someone tries to say otherwise. And spoiler alert, the "pros only use good pokemon/moves" are not usually contributing to such things

7:50 i half disagree with the idea that gen 3 encourages outside the box thinking when it comes to pokemon choices. i think you're encouraged to use standard pokemon with unique sets, but for the most part it's difficult to justify niche pokemon in gen 3 because of the way the metagame is, particularly offensive sweepers or offensive supports. it's mainly because of how much hax exists in the tier, since all it takes is one unlucky turn to completely destroy your whole strategy even if it worked on paper. the more experimental your team is the less solid it will be against common threats due to being way more susceptible to crits, status effects or missing crucial moves. also as a general rule most offensive teams basically require either mag or specially bulky dug, so if you aren't using a solid offensive core with enough brute force to break through skarm/bliss without trapping then it's too inconsistent to rely on. the one exception to this is pokemon who are very solid defensively like dusclops, it's hard to fit in but when the team needs one you can rely on it. ik roselia worked here but it's extremely susceptible to missing leech seed, crits and flinches thanks to it's terrible defensive stats, so if you try to ladder with it good luck
