I have narrow flat feet. Many years ago I got measured (9B) and fitted to the 65 last at an Allen Edmonds store by the store manager who knew his business. After a wear or two to break in, the fit and comfort of these shoes are so nice, I forget I am wearing shoes. I am afraid to try another brand without getting an in shore fitting due to all of the differences in last. I hope to someday get to NYC to get fitted at Carmina. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion for some of the finer things in life. Fit is king! Peace to you sir.

Thank you Vlad for a great and informative video. The presentation was top notch in your very distinct and engaging style. I thought I knew my feet but ooops it turns out I do not. They are not normal feet but flat... who would have known😄. I attributed some of differences in fit to the lasts but I apparently figured my feet wrongly. I know better now.

Very instructive, Bro. I learned that my left instep is slightly higher. It makes my oxfords feel funny depending on the brand and last. I agree 100 percent on the tight fit. I walk 10000+ steps a day at work. Loose shoes increase fatigue.

Oh wow! I didn’t even know that. The thing is loose shoes can’t get smaller, only bigger. But tighter shoes can and will loosen up a bit.

I have flat feet but have custom made insoles which fix the issue with shoes. I primarily wear boots, but since getting properly fitted insoles I have not seen any gaping or creases on the side. The one downside is however that it can raise your arch, so thin profile shoes may not fit as well, or will take longer to break in as you have to allow the stitching around the laces to conform to your foot.

I have the final answer for you! I had the same problem and after a long investigation and analysis.. figured out the problem!! The problem is that the heel of the VASS shoes is not leveled well with the sole. If you put the shoe on a table and look at the side, you can easily see the the heel front portion is elevated off the table because the heel is inclined forward/upward. When you wear them and apply pressure by your weight and foot on the shoes, the heels level with the floor creating a bending of the middle portion of the sole with the middle down and front and rear tip are up creating an extra length of the sides that can pushes them by outward. I am calling Vass to fix this problem. But the easy fix would be to add a wedge of 3 mm thickness to the frontal part of the heel to make the heel exactly leveled with the whole sole.. and VOILA! The Flat feet emphasizes this problem by creating more pressure in the middle but they are not the reason!

Hi Vlad. Great video. I think I have normal feet but I’m going to try the shower test to check. I assumed for years I was wearing the right size shoes until I moved to Shanghai and they didn’t have UK shoes sizes so I had to try fitting different sizes and then when I bought shoes online from the UK again I found I was actually a whole size smaller than I believed. Now my shoes fit much better. I didn’t known they were supposed to fit this well. It’s something most people don’t spend too much time thinking about but it’s actually important to make sure you have the right fit. And leaning about which shoe last fits you is great as you can confidently order more shoes and expect a great fit. I bought a pair of Oliver Sweeney shoes a few months ago and they are the best fitting shoes I have ever worn. Unfortunate they just discontinued the last. Damn! The search goes on. Or at least that’s my excuse for looking for more shoes.

I have very flat feet too. Cole Haan makes fantastic shoes for flat feet, if you get them on sale as city beaters. Santoni as well, nice heel cups, flexible, tight around the arches and usually doesn’t dig into your instep. Remember when buying shoes for your children, if you size up in length, cut the width. Your child’s feet will grow, but the arches won’t fall. High arch feet won’t experience pain by having the tighter shoe. It happens a lot in childhood, when your mother gets you new shoes in august and decides to size up for saving money on something you’ll grow into. For me it was running style sneakers from Kmart that look a lot like Yeezy’s today.

Vladimir Riché definitely. I started out with two pairs of cemented Florsheims and they were very uncomfortable with just a two block walk to work. Couldn’t wait to get out of them at the end of the day. Having a steel shank with a good arch support helps a bunch.
@tezzapree71414 жыл бұрын
One thing you have missed is when the vamp is too generous leading to bad creasing and/or the shoe starts to look 'flat' after a few wears. The only pairs of shoes I have is a slightly small pair of pre-Prada Church which are no longer made and a pair of Thursday boots. I have to wear inner soles which I feel somewhat negates the purchase of good shoes. I tried to get a cobbler to insert another layer of inner sole under the ball of the feet on a pair of Loake semi-brogues but he wouldn't do it.
@v_r_4 жыл бұрын
I think that's usually due to wearing the wrong size as opposed to an issue with the last not matching your feet. Unless I'm wrong.

One thing I have always been mindful of is what I think is called the heel clip.That is the inward curve at the back of the shoe when viewed from the side. A properly fitting shoe would have a marked heel clip, while an improperly fitting shoe would trace an almost straight heel clip, or more precisely, no inward curve. It is important because if the heel clip is not well defined the bottom of the pants would always get caught in the gap created by an improper heel clip - the gap between the back of the foot and the shoe. It causes the pants to have a semi-break at the rear crease where it meets the shoe. It is an unattractive look. The back of the pants should have a straight uninterrupted fall. The problem is an ill fitting heel clip that is too pronounced comes with its own drawback. Here the shoe may cause blisters at the back of the heel. Oh well, the varieties of men's clothing. It is one of the reasons I have never bought clothing online.
@v_r_4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and explanation, maybe I’ve been lucky with that too as I’ve never had an issue with the pants getting caught in that gap. I’ll pay more attention next time.

By slim chance, I had found Ace Marks last fit my feet perfectly and they use the same last for all their shoes. I did not need to break them in and are more comfortable than a broken-in well-fitted pair of sneakers. I wish it was my Allen Edmunds shoes that fit like that instead of my Ace Marks. Still, I should be thankful for the Ace Marks fit. When I started getting into dress shoes I started with several Allen Edmunds. I had to return the penny loafers. For after almost 90 days of trying to break the loafers in it was still too tight and too difficult to take them on and off even with a shoehorn. It gave me flashbacks to when I was a kid and a pair of tassel loafers my mother brought me had caused my foot to swell.
@v_r_4 жыл бұрын
Oh damn, shoes shouldn't be loose but definitely not tight to the point that your feet swell. Fit is king, so I'm glad you've found a brand that works for you.
@alvinsanchez9674 жыл бұрын
@@v_r_ The Allen Edmunds penny loafers did not cause my foot to swell just the wrong size for that particular type of shoe and stiffer leather was not what I was looking for. Next time I will try an Italian made in softer leather for easier on and off. As for the tassel loafers, it was a low-cost brand from a regular shoe store. They were not tight but something about the last had caused my foot to swell. One last thing thanks for the information about the instep V. I was worried a bit about mines.

I sympathize! I have a very narrow heel and ankle, and almost always have problems with heel slippage. Most RTW lasts claim to be made for "average" feet, and yet it seems those really don't exist. That's why I find it surprising when RTW shoes do fit.There's a learning curve with different lasts as you mention, and sometimes the ones we like are not the ones that fit us. Anyway thanks for the video! Really appreciate you sharing your experience in this realm!

@Vladimir what are some brands that are fit friendly for flat feet?
@v_r_7 ай бұрын
It’s hard to say for sure as I also have a high instep, so that changes things but I’ve been lucky with 90% of the brands I’ve tried. My advice is to try some of the Asian shoe brands as about 20% of Asians have flat feet. But definitely reach out to the brands first, maybe on Instagram to confirm. So brands like Oct. Tenth, Yeossal, Blazing Wonders, Ichigo Ichie, etc.

Well said and thank you for this nice video. A few years ago I lost some weight. My shoe size went down by half a size. However, my in-step remained the same and I was challenged to find a RTW shoe with a generous instep. 10 years into this struggle I found a few suitable lasts but only at the cost of having bought many ill fitting ones. So the question remains which is costlier going bespoke which costs 4 - 10 times a RTW shoe or accept the cost of trial and error? I am tempted to finally try the former.

Vladimir have you ever figured out what was causing the issue with your shoes aside from being told it is because you are flat footed? I honest don't believe it has anything to do with you having flat feet. I believe it is the shoe sizing in relation to your feet sizing and an incorrect fit and location of the first metatarsal joint of your feet in the shoes. The creasing you saw in the one pair is a clear sign of this and the gapping tends to also be cause by this same issue.

Regarding the instep. I bought two pair of Carlos Santos and they have a small V. Now I know I shouldn’t worry about that too much. Most likely that’ll disappear with a few wears ☺️.

What brand would you say are comfortable out from the box?
@v_r_4 жыл бұрын
I’d say most of the brands that I wear are pretty comfortable from jump. Of course that’s assuming that they fit well and the last is a good match for your feet.

one of the worst feeling is when you invest money in a good pair of shoes and you have a gut feeling they don't fit right but you keep telling yourself it's OK etc. this happened to me a couple of times, and sometimes it gets resolved by going a size smaller, but other times the issue is the last like you said.

What’s good, Steve? Buying shoes online is not easy. Unfortunately, most guys don’t have access to good shoes locally where they can just walk in to try them on. So it’s necessary but definitely not ideal.

Love the tie. Where did you get it? I bought a couple ties from EG Cappelli per your recommendation. Any other makers where you can pick such a specific length and width? I have a bunch of ties from Sam Hober who can make any measurement which is nice.

Thanks, Dylan! Cappelli and Hober are 2 of the few that I know where you can really specify the details without paying an upcharge since almost everything they make is made to order. Brands like Shibumi which I love would charge extra for such a service. The tie that I got on is from Berg & Berg.

Buying shoes has always been a nightmare for me since I was a kid. They fit just right at the store, but whenever I bought it home and started wearing, they'll start to hurt my feet. As I got older and enlisted, I was issued a pair of US size 13 combat boots. It might seemed like and average sized boot. But I'm 5′7″. That's when I realized I have been plagued by flat feet all along.

Happened with my Carlos Santos shoes black cap toe oxfords . Had to return em! And got a Forest EEE last black cap toe oxfords! The fit and they slide a slight bit at the back but I’m praying it’s a socks issue. Thank goodness I thought it was only me that had that Gaping problem with shoes! Yo, another good video. Doing the people's work! Yo, you're right though, judging your instep is the most difficult part. I think I have a medium to high instep, but it's hard to judge. For example, I bough my first Carmina plain toe oxford a year and half ago on the Simpson last (I got to try them on at Barney's in San Francisco) and I went with 8.5 UK since it is recommended to go a half size up. I'll say that the Simpson Last has both lower instep, and is slimmer than the Rain (for example my 8.5 UK Simpson fits noticeably closer to my foot than my 8 UK Rain). The laces gaped a bit (they practically close now, with a very small V about .25-.5cm gap at the top) more than I liked, but the rest of the shoe fit real well, close to my foot and real comfortable. I bought a black captoe oxford this year, which has a higher instep, in 8 UK - the laces gap a bit (with a medium to small V-1cm gap at the top). The Rain last, even at 8 UK (my normal size) fits a bit wider than the 8.5UK on Simpson Last. But the Rain also seems to crease a bit more because it has more volume too. Rain doesn't look bad on me, but the Simpson Last seems to fit better. I need to buy another Simpson Last, a cap toe oxford, to better compare, but it's hard to judge. Long way to say - shoe fit is complicated, and it can be really hard to pick between "good" fit, "great" fit, and "best" fit. Again, great video! Much needed public service.
@v_r_4 жыл бұрын
What’s up, Alex? You’re 100% right, it sounds like the Simpson is the ideal last for you which would then make the Rain passable but not great. And you already know, I do it for the people LOL.
@alexnw60504 жыл бұрын
@@v_r_ AND THE PEOPLE APPRECIATE IT! Also, funny how much a difference a millimeter or two can make (pretty sure that Carmina has shared insole sizes and the Simpson 8.5 UK is still 1 mm thinner than than the Rain). I like Rain, and may still buy it, it fits me well (just a little more creasing over the vamp than I prefer, not super noticeable, but noticeable to me), but Simpson fits like a glove. Though I am curious how Inca might fit, as well as Costix, Buger, and Balitx.
@v_r_4 жыл бұрын
One of my friends who also has flat feet found that the Inca worked well for him. I haven’t tried them personally as I heard that the instep is lower than Rain which wouldn’t be good for me.
@alexnw60504 жыл бұрын
@@v_r_ , yeah it's really the instep that appeals to me, because even if my instep is not low, my foot is low-volume and sometimes that lower instep helps everything hug the foot better. Unfortunately, shoes, unlike clothes you absolutely HAVE to just try out a LAST on AND wear the shoes for a while before you really know how they fit.
@v_r_4 жыл бұрын
Got it! Sounds like they would probably work for you then.
