Great analysis bud! A very well made video. As a Suresh Raina fan, I am so glad to see such an insightful video encompassing almost all the points that led to downfall of Raina's career. Now I don't know if you have followed his career in realtime, or have just studied his career to make this video, I feel that one more point was needed in this video. I don't know how many people will agree, but I have a VERY strong feel that Raina's bats made a lasting impact on his career. If you see his batting pre 2012 T20 WC, his batspeed was something else, pertaining to what I feel were light-weighted SG bats. When he started using Adidas bats during 2012 T20 WC, I suddenly noticed a difference in his batspeed and in-turn in his shotmaking, which was visible throughout his career post swtiching to Adidas bats. See his batspeed in the 2011 England ODI series, and compare it with his batspeed in 2014 Eng ODI series or 2013 champions trophy or 2013-14 home season. See his batspeed during 2012 CB series and compare it with 2015 WC or 2016 Aus T20 series. I could point out the actual innings/ shots and/or the dismissals that shows this difference. For instance, see his lord's 2011 Eng series innings, where he is hitting Finn over mid wicket for a huge six, just see from where he pick up that shot and try to remeber if these kind of shots were played post 2012. Besides this batspeed thing, I feel that Raina was underused in T20Is particulary in T20 WCs. His IPL position was no.3, but in T20Is his batting position was never fixed: 1. due to him being not very consistent at No.3, 2. due to his ability to take risks from Ball 1 3. due to him batting lower down the order, India had a good finishing line up 4. due to Virat being Virat at No.3 ). Having said that, 2014 T20 wc was India's wc, Raina could have been the MVP for India in that tournament, but god knows why did Virat was not given the opening with Rohit and why was Raina not batting at no.3. He hardly came to bat in that WC. I would like to tell you that this video brings back all the pain that most Raina fans experienced post 2015. I waited (still wait) for each and every inning of his, be it in IPL, be it for the Indian team be it for UP, be it for any Legends league he plays in, but post 2015 I never really saw Raina in full flow.

First of all, thank you so much for the support. You call us insightful? What you've said and commented is one of the most interesting takes and unfortunately/fortunately not something we thought of. It's interesting you talk about the change of bats because we'll be curious to know who manufactured the Adidas bats (because they themselves don't manufacture cricket bats) to see if he changed the weight or something that drastic. But this is honestly so interesting that we will go back and look through everything you said. Thank you so much for taking your time to comment this down. Our idea of making videos like these is to teach people or show people that it's more than just a bat and ball game. If people like you and us support each other? This game will only grow and geeks of the sport like us will only enjoy that. So thank you so much once again. This was really insightful.

Raina's 87 runs off 25 balls against kxip in IPL 2014 qualifier 2 is still one of the most iconic innings in T20 history. If it wasn't for McCullum's blunder which resulted in an ugly run out for Raina, he would have surely broken Gayle's record of fastest century in IPL. God knows how many more runs he would have scored before helping CSK chase that mammoth target of 227.

@@kanakTheGold this video is about Suresh Raina and how did he disappear from the limelight of international cricket and IPL all of a sudden. So what's wrong if I want to recount one of the best and least talked about innings of T20 cricket. Gayle's 175* wasn't interrupted by any dismissal or Dilshan's 'blunder', he came in as an opener and was on the crease till the very last ball. But Raina had scored 87 off just 25 and CSK had just batted 6 overs but already reached 100 runs, just goes on to show how immensely he had contributed to CSK's innings. Scoring the next 13 runs in less than 5 balls wasn't a big deal for him the way he was already batting and his strike rate of 348. It's a fact that McCullum's lack of awareness led to Suresh Raina being dismissed in the most unpleasant manner. CSK deserved to play the 2014 final against KKR and smash them as well for a 3rd title.

Huge fan of Virat "the batsman" since 2013 but consider him a poor captain off the field because very rarely did he back any player except for Ajinkya Rahane and Kl Rahul(Rohit in white ball and Bumrah in all formats did not need to be backed as they were consistent perfomers). Suresh Raina was brought back in 2018 South Africa t20is, he scored 16 odd in 1st t20i, 31 in 2nd t20i and 43 in 3rd t20i then did well in Nidahas trophy, scored 60 odd vs Ireland in 2nd t20i, got to bat only once vs England 2nd t20i where he scored 28 then in Odis, he got to bat only twice scoring 48 at Lord's and 1 in Headinly so he got dropped from Odis after 48 and 1 and was astonishingly dropped even from t20is where he scored 65 something in 2nd last t20i he played but still he should have tried to make a comeback and not retire at 33.

Now I know that cricketers put alot of effort in their careers but Suresh Raina at some point became too casual with his career, in 2016-19 he was little over weight, not even performing in domestic circuit apart from that century in T20I. I believe his best replacement would be his fellow UP teammate Rinku Singh, I saw him make his debut for UP in 2018-19, man that guy is absolute find, he was batting at No 6, doesnt get stuck at the crease, free flowing shots, does not put pressure on his body alot playing shots, plays proper cricketing shots, attacks and plays like a team man. I want to see him play at No4/5 like Raina used to play because he can build innings, attack and play the support role, I've seen very few do it in indian team and he could be one of them.

A very apt analysis.. Even Sourav(Dada) had that weakness but his ways were far more unconventional to tackle the short ball. He had taken a lot of blows on his body. Cheteshwar Pujara also doesn't fare well against the short delivery by putting his body in the line of the ball and moving his eyes away from the line. I would say, Suresh Raina was a good finisher in the 50 over format on low bounce pitches. He also figured well in matches overseas on slow wickets, where enough time is there to adjust the shots. He had those inherent weaknesses but used to contribute from his fielding too. I feel that he has had a good career. International cricket exploits the vulnerabilities of a cricketer and weeds an average player out.Talent is something which is gifted and is only honed in international cricket for good. If one is little short on talent, it cant be compensated.

His battings had only one drawback. Short ball. Don't know why he hasn't worked on it? Otherwise he was an attacking batsman. Also can play defensive when it neeeded. He can give you many overs in bowling. He was one of the best fielder.

Sourav Ganguly had the same problem with Short ball. But he played at a different time where he could duck short ball and play some dot balls. Also Saurav Ganguly was amazing timer of the ball and even after exposing stumps, sometimes hit superb sixes of short ball. That's why he had Longer and successful career.

I am a suresh raina fan....this whole analysis has been in my mind since 2016....that is sooo true.. Him preparing for short ball, getting out on Yorker... It was so frustrating to watch as a fan... But its okay he had good career and great ipl ( 87 vs kxip).... And about his batting he is naturally born right hand who bats left handed which could not actually made his pull shot freely even after playing so many years its like always playing with your non dominant hand even with good shot selection and timing you can't use your full strength.... Sometimes i wonder what would had happened if he batted as right handed

I think it was the 2003 u19 wc that i noticed Raina, where he made 90 odd runs from 50 odd balls in a match. I remember reading about the Inning in the next day newspaper. It was the wc where Dhawan made whole lot runs and centuries and failed in the final. But more than Dhawan it Raina and his inning that created an impression in my mind.

Honestly speaking, I feel Suresh Raina was one of those many players who were top class and match winners while playing for CSK but were average when playing for India.. Mohit Sharma, Badrinath, Goni, Shardul, Deepak Chahar, Jadeja and the list goes on and on.

uhhh bro. He was a key player of 2011 WC. As soon as he got a chance he scored. Scored very important quick fire runs against Australia QF and Pak too. Average for India he certainly wasnt. Underused in his strength format due to Virat being Virat of number 3 position.

I think he was a very valuable player , stats dont do justice to his importance , Dhoni loved him and knew his importance , great teams always had finishers , India had DHoni , Suresh and Yuvraj who could also hit , with that when you add tendulkar , Shewag , Gambhir and Kholi , thats a very good batting line up.

When I started watching Cricket... I knew that Suresh Raina is the most trustable batsman in the team. He would not score 100s but as sure as hell he would rarely score belows 30. 40s used to be great innings back then. Almost all of natches India played had his hidden inpact.

Loved to watch him play, always smiling and positive. That short ball was too big a problem and he couldn't adapt, as you rightly said. His attacking mindset was his strength and he lost that as he became too cautious about the short ball. Nevertheless, the man won CT and a WC and he will always be Mr IPL. An extremely successful career overall, so many memorable knocks both in IPL and international.

Never realised this. At his best, he was explosive. The way he got out against Mustafizur in the 2015 Bangladesh tour to a good length delivery with no pace is perhaps is the best example of him getting out like that: I remember thinking how ridiculous it looked at the time.

For me, Suresh Raina was and will forever be the complete cricketer - strength in the middle and lower middle order, handy bowler, dependable fielder and a complete team man. If he failed with the bat, he would contribute with the ball or with his fielding and vice versa. There was hardly a match where he didn't contribute at all. He was turning out to be the Michael Bevan of India and he did play that role several times. But, whether it was his technical flaws, or whether the fact that he belonged to a transition (pre and post IPL) generation of Indian cricket like Yuvraj, Gambhir and therefore once the IPL generation of Hardiks and SKY and Pants started entering the scene, he faded away. But as I said Suresh Raina will always be on my team and like me there are millions of cricket fans who saw him play and silently win matches for India (although his 35 from 25 balls and 2-35 in 7 overs would get overshadowed by someone else's 65 from 50 balls and 4-50 in 10 overs).

I vividly remember Raina’s struggles against short balls. He was given ample opportunities to overcome them, but unfortunately, he couldn’t. To be fair, though, even Yuvraj and Dhoni had ordinary records in Test matches on the bouncy, seaming pitches of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and England.

There is a memory of Suresh Raina that will always remain with me. In 2014 IPL Qualifier 2, KXIP had posted a mammoth total of 220+, Viru being the chief architect of that & it seemed that there was nothing CSK could do except take it. When CSK's innings started, the openers got out quickly, I think it was Faf at that time and another opener. It seemed like there was a humiliation in store for the CSK. In came Suresh Raina and he just started counter-attacking against Mitchell Johnson. I have watched a lot of cricket, but I had never seen anyone play the way he was playing. It seemed he was possessed. He had an answer to every ball that day. And we've to remember, it wasn't the KXIP of 2015 or PBKS of this year. It was KXIP of 2014. In 2014, KXIP were at their belligerent best. Think of 2024's SRH, only better. They had the best bowling line up of Mitchell Johnson, Sandeep Sharma at his peak & Parwinder Awana. In all-rounder they had Glenn Maxwell and Axar Patel. In batting they had Viru, Dhawan, Maxwell & Killer-Miller. They seemed all but poised to win that match. Raina was a wall that day in front of this sea of a team. He was batting so good that even Viru's century innings seemed would not be able to save KXIP and like so many anti-climactic heartbreaking innings, it ended with a run-out. That was the only innings that I saw in which Suresh Raina was confident enough of playing the short ball. But yes, there is no denying that Raina's Achilles heel was the short ball. Even though, I'm not talented enough to play cricket for the school club that Raina played for :D, but even I could notice that he struggled in facing short-ball.

There was a time,I could not imagine csk without Thala,Raina,Bravo,Jadeja,Faf which was always a core of CSK from 2010 to 2021 but now it is turning to a reality.😢 CSK was something else before ban though it has won 3 trophies after ban.

The actual delivery that ended his career was infact a half volley by Trent Boult where he was expecting a short ball but ended up breaking his bat and handing a nothing catch to Rahul Chahar. An era ended that day (but another era probably began for CSK)
