Hey Matt, I realise this is an old post.. but just wanted to say it's fantastic. I'm an old bloke and a mechanical numpty, but your explanation was spot on. I remember in 'the good old days' where I could lift the bonnet and know all of the components on my HD Holden, I often used the screwdriver to jump the starter or bang the solenoid if it was stuck, but never knew the mechanics of it all. @@MadMatt4WD keep them up mate! I'm doing a binge watch at the moment... you're Waeco thermistor replacement also super useful, along with the toolkit stuff, snatch strap vs rope etc... I've been 4x4 touring for about 17 years... but still learning. Hopeless mechanically... but do just enough to get by. Love my FJ Cruiser... but they're a lot more techo than the old HD or Valiant push button auto (wish I had those cars now!). Cheers 🍻

Hi Matt, I’ve same or very similar starter in 92 2.4 diesel hilux, solenoid sticking! Not shooting out to the flywheel sometimes! I’ve had it out a couple of times in the past and brought to different people to fix and works for a while but then acts up again. Can you show me what to do and what parts to clean or replace! At the moment I use a bar to tap the starter when it sticks and away it goes with the slightest little tip of the bar

Change the whole starter or rebuild it.

Awesome thanks mate can you tell me why if I tap a dodgy starter why it will start em I actually is it the worm not getting sucked down what is stopping it

yes the slug gets stuck a tad and doesn't make a good contact the tap can free it up.

so this morning i went ot start my 1hdt and when i turn the key all i'd get is the the click from that solenoid. Can you show the whole 1hdt starting circuit and locations of things?

Great explanation for a numbskull like me Just had a solenoid issue on a Nissan Xtrail. I thought it was a battery issue, but was told there was still life in it … it was the starter motor and solenoid. So I paid for both I think (?) That’s the problem with not knowing the difference. Reckon the possibility was that those terminals could have been replaced and I could’ve avoided the cost of the entire unit? (Do they come as one unit?) I’m also wondering what goes on inside the starter motor - now that you’ve piqued my curiosity.
