I'm 22 and I finished welding school 2 years ago. I live in an area with a lot of refineries / shipyards / fab shops. But I haven't found work yet that I want to do long term. I recently looked into joining the Boilermakers union and so far it seems like this is a path I would be willing to walk for the next 15 years at least. Look into if there's a local hall near you where you can join as an apprentice and get paid to learn. Training is online or on the job. If you're willing to travel across the country you can make a lot of money.

If you don’t make it as a welder look into plumbing. I do it for myself and make a fucking killing. I’m so busy I name my price and still get hired. I don’t touch old pipe other than just cutting it out and I don’t touch shit. Remodels & new construction is the way to go. Easy money.

Good Points! I started a repair shop, when I was 16. I worked out of my dad's garage. Mech work and body repair. It was good summer money and I would take jobs on any holiday too. I learned a lot about people and how to work with them. That's 44 yrs ago. I wish you well! Cheers

I too have been welding for most of my life in support of my log trucking business and friends and family....but I am now seriously considering starting a mobile welding business. I make well over 100k a year at my current job....but there is no reward. It is a sedentary desk job and I desperately miss making cool stuff happen with my hands and skills. I love fabrication and repair. 10 years ago I had an entire truck shop, a 185CFM diesel air compressor and Sandblaster, and welders and plasma cutter, torch, grinders out the wazoo and like an idiot I sold it ALL! And am desperate to get back to doing stuff that makes me feel alive and uses the hard earned skills I developed over the 25 years since I started welding and fabricating and big rig diesel truck ownership and mechanics. Thanks again for this great video! Happy to see someone so ambitious!

Lol..in the beginning I'd bid my work adding in a tool or 2 that I would need to complete the job. I was only able to do that because I would be cheap to begin with but it Def helps to do that if possible. Over time you collect the needed tools and they are paid for by the jobs your doing. Good video man, I’ve been in the trade about 2 years now I’m 24, at my shop we do a ton to structural steel and hand railings but I really enjoy when the garbage containers and beat up dump trucks or excavators come in, it really challenges you to think outside the box. I know working for someone right now doing what I do will help me with my own business in the future. It’s like I’m getting paid to learn everyday and save possible headaches in my own business.

Hiya Anthony, my name is John. I’m up here in RI I’m doin a lot of these same things, less welding maybe. But I’m in the garage running beads often. More concrete based and railings and I’m just making that transition. From dabbling to becoming the primary hustle. Walking away from a most excellent gig(making food machines, like big stuff)for Heinz, purina foods, HEB market, etc. but, it’s time. To close that door, been 10 problem solving yrs. Great channel, really enjoy what you’re doing out there.

Excellent video. I like how well you break everything down. I’d like to build metal buildings and pipe fence on the side, but it always boils down to not finding anyone who wants to do that kind of work. If I was younger I’d quit farming and go into welding full time, it pays a hell of a lot better. Keep up the good work and keep those good informative videos coming !

Couple things to think about. I had my own business for 16 years and loved it. But medical expenses and the government drove me to a 9 to 5. Don't forget to add in for social security, self employed people pay both parts. And account for downtime like a couple people said. Most people can't bill a full 12 hours. You have time spent running the business. A lot of people use am overhead percentage like 18-30%. Nothing beats working for yourself. Keep up the great videos. Thanks.

Impressive story about building a business.A lot of people don’t realize how long it takes to build up and keep everything you need. I personally never bought a piece of equipment until I knew I had a job that equipment would pay for itself. I think people should think twice before buying equipment on credit. It’s better to get it piece by piece as you can afford it.

Thanks for being totally honest about it. I've been a horseshoer for 30 years and been taking welding classes thinking about trying to do Mobile welding or possibly get a career in it. Going to try to get my 1-in plate test vertical up and overhead sometime in June possibly for SMAW. But coming from that background is real similar but the overhead is a lot less. But paying your dues, due diligence, perseverance ,understanding all play a part like you talk about making mistakes and growing. Cool stuff.

Do SMAW, open root if you can keyhole 6010 good. Don't try MIG unless its hard to get a certification out of position with solid wire on plate. The penetration just isn't there with the lower heat inputs you need to get it to go vertical up. Never do Pulsed Mig its a garbage gimmick that looks nice, but will break apart even in flat position welding. Hopefully your welding classes will give you a certification there because it gets pricey to do it one shot elsewhere. When you get it don't forget you have to sign a document that you have done the type of welding you were certified under in the last 6 months with like $10 money order to keep the certification valid.

Anthony, I have a 300 gallon compressor with a 7 horsepower compressor, A sand blasting cabinet and a vapor blaster cabinet that I built myself. I found an awesome 72 inch metal brake from a race car fab shop that was going out of business. I have a Miller Roughneck 2E that is in pristine condition but it is an Ac welder. I also have a 300 amp Hobart welder from the Alaskan pipeline that has a Wisconsin twin cylinder engine. I also have another Miller welder on a trailer with a propane conversion to be able to weld inside pharmaceutical companies. I have a Ford Ranger that I built a flatbed for and has a crane and a Drill press and a decent vise. I do have a Hyperthem thermal Lance and a ton of tools that I have collected over the past few years. I am a chemical engineer right now but as soon as I put some more money away i am going to start my welding business full time. I found a Lathe with all the tooling that I have to save up for as well. I still need a better crane for the truck and convert the Ranger over to spring over axle. I do love Florida and when I move back down there I will be going back to Tampa. Love ya brother!!

I been in the ceramic tile business for over 38 years. So I know how to run a business, have lots of tools. I'm burnt out on the tile business...but looking at welding... I'm now 65 ready to collect SS soon...but need a good paying side hustle. I would love to do welding for an extra income. What is the best all around arc welder for most applications. If you don't have access to a certain piece of heavy equipment- say a crane or whatever. You can usually rent from a sunbelt rentals and factor that cost into the price of your service. By renting you are not responsible for the cost of repair to the machine or tool and its usually not as expensive as you'd expect.

Great video and advice. I turned down a job welding a headstock for a loader to another headstock for another loader because the customer din't want to modify the machine to take headstock for the loader he uses. In the end he did it himself. How long it will last is anyones guess.

How do you determine pricing for jobs? Metal and time are the easy answer but what if the customer supplies the metal? Purely labor time? How would I justify a labor rate based on the skills I have?

Teaching myself to weld ,started at a old dc 100 amp century mig welder , now added a 1980's 230 amp solid copper transformer craftsman ac stick welder. Running them off a homemade generator at 8000watts.. made lots of mistakes.

I’ve failed time and time again trying to do mobile welding full time and do flooring full time which I’ve been doing since I was 15 and now im 22, i now know that you need a day job and welding side hustle until you have no choice but to choose welding, I have a Miller 200le aead engine drive, but im currently swapping out the engine cause im working on a budget of 0$ for all my welding equipment but im doing exactly what you do and diversifying my equipment and never buying new and fixing welders with parts off cars and older welders and generators

hey man, I also do mobile welding and scrap metal and such. Sometimes I get slow also and at first I blame everything under the sun for why I'm slow. but in reality it probably is me. I sat back and realized that my marketing and sales game kinda sucks when it comes to the welding side of things so I spent hours researching advertisements other guys are using. not just in my area but literally across the country and even sometimes in other countries. when I saw one that made me actually want to call the person if I needed their services I took notes of what they were doing and tried to apply some of that knowledge to my business. I also clicked on all sorts of advertisements no matter how horrible they looked just to also take notes on what not to do when it comes to advertising. am I an expert because of this? no. but it did help significantly. Now I need to improve upon my closing skills. That seems to be the harder skill to learn. at least for me when I'm talking to a window shopper who doesn't need anything welded right this very second.

I don’t know Florida laws but in indiana you can drive a truck with air brakes without holding a cdl as long as the truck is plated at 20,000 lbs or under.
