To promote their latest film, 'Civil War', A24 posted several AI generated movie posters on Instagram. Is this the beginning of the end for movie poster design?
Also, would you like to see me ugly cry while listening to AI generated music? All this and more, on tonight's Paper & Light episode.

Scary part is that while I would say that at the moment, the level of AI is only making mediocre art and stories. But looking at movies throughout my lifetime. And beyond that, all the way from the beginning. The bread and butter. The majority of movies out there are... mediocre. AI could replace 90 % of the output of any studio any decade since the dawn of cinema... and I doubt we would notice.

No matter what the media, the infusion of AI has really made me retreat into exploring all the works of the past that I've missed. For example the other day I watched "12 Angry Men," and I just loved the fact that not only could I watch a great movie, but I didn't have to wonder "was the script written by a person? If it turned out that all those details were AI generated, suddenly all that is meaningless. AI intends nothing except to imitate its training data. It is not sentient, it does not have a message it wants to say with its art unless it is copied from someone else who said it better. When you really think about it tho, AI movie posters are kind of the best way to metaphorically illustrate our decent into a dystopian society. What is more dystopian than taking something so intrinsically human, so intrinsically derived from our individual human experiences and perception of the world, only to have it then be shat out by an machine completely devoid of these things; that understanding or context? Joking aside yeah I don't want or believe AI should have any place in art beyond places where it doesn't compromise actual artistic vision; i.e. pathfinding crowds in cg, advanced simulation; basically things that frankly aren't really modeled like, or equateable to midjourney "AI" at all. The only ethical use I could see for machine learning programs like this is for identifying potential diseases or cancer in patients before they become a risk, ..though that's assuming it would be able to make predictions/assessments on par with or better than trained medical professionals. AI is inevitable, but humans, decent humans will stand in opposition to its misuse, ..and hopefully facilitate for ethical and productive applications for the future so that we as a species may continue to keep creating.

My hot take is that they actually wanted to show the dangers of AI images when used in war scenarios. It is possible to generate far better and harder to detect AI images than the ones they posted, so it must have been a conscious decision to post those photos while knowing that people will spot it. In my opinion, they showed us with these posters what is ahead of us, when you no longer know if published images of war are really documented by war photographers or if they were generated by either side as a tactic and to mislead the public

Just saying, but movie posters haven'ts been that good since they got rid of the Painters. Those actually stick in my mind long after I see them. 1:55 The movie was digging deeper then Ai Big Bad. It delved into the idea of keeping Ai captive and is that actually ethical? Chicken or the Egg type situation. Would the Ai have manipulated the protag if she was given and some agency? SPOILERS. Her dying by the hands of the scientist or the main character would've felt wrong and unjust due to her level of detainment. It's similar Terminator. Skynet pulled the plug on us be we shot first. They tried shutting it down and in under a second after that. It unleashed the Nukes. I think there's a lot of sci fi who warns against Anti Ai Zealotry and how it will inevitably backfire and most will blame the Ai meanwhile we were the initial aggressor in the situation. Rememeber. Ai is like a child. What goes in will come out. Instill with good things and the likely out come is it will do good things. Right now. People are already treating Ai like it's AM from I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. A War Mind. A super computer designed to kill. I wonder where it got it's tendencies from?

I dont mind creators using ai to do tedious work. Like in Dune they used ai to color most of the fremen eyes blue. But replacing artist as a whole it will make the level of entry extremely more difficult and decimate jobs. Since many business owners in the entertainment industry mostly care about profit margins they will cut any corner they can to increase profits even it decrease the quality of art itself. Ai can be a helpful tool and decrease the load of work artist have to do but we have to draw a line. Ai is a TOOL not the artists itself, the quality of a high level artist is completely different from ai.

Subbed, because this is the BEST academic design discourse on the future of AI: Also i think it's shit that major companies are using it without at least EDITING things, it's ok to conceptually use AI, it's even ok with AI for some things - but like we all got trained: YOU DO need to critique your AI outputs, do they have 10 fingers, if not - edit it lol - DOES IT HAVE THREE DOORS - EDIT IT XD -- Professional use of AI should be just the same as it always is with editing: WE aren't perfect, and nobody's ever going to make perfect content - but even with my album covers i make for my own music (Pst: I do have a design degree, and this is a great academic discourse to show to students just getting into design) -- I edit, I add things - but largely i'm not using the base image, and usually it's something i've trained myself, because i work in AI now - but Stable Diffusion has the option of doing that extra step: Fixing the shit that midjourney gets lazy with.

Even though AI is a very helpful tool, as demonstrated with the AI generation fill tool in Photoshop, the fact that almost no human creativity was put into the poster should not be okay. Maybe creating a 3D scene digitally and adding in an AI element or two after rendering would be fine as most of the humanity and artistry was maintained, but even then it’s hard to draw the line. The fact that low effort AI images are appearing on most social media platforms and now in other commercial uses (like with some of Lego’s proportional material, and now these posters) is very shocking, and I lose lots of respect for brands who do use AI generated images.

The movie was great but I feel that the marketing for the movie kind of did more damage for it than good. Not just with the AI posters, but they clearly advertised it in a way to make it seem like it was going to be a fully action-packed war movie. I watched the movie before seeing any trailers so I had no prior expectations which made it a genuinely amazing IMAX experience especially with the genocide scene, but I can see why people were disappointed with the film itself who saw trailers and posters like this for the movie and the actual film was a much different thang.

03:13 - The disappointment in his voice is so genuine lol Sadly, I think the industry is never giving up on AI. It's only gonna get worse. And it's gonna worse fast. Let me give you an example: I started film school last year, when the discussions of AI were just getting started. This year a big producer from my country (a third world country, I'm not talking about the USA or anything from Hollywood) did a presentation for us, talking about her next film. The official poster they released to the public is 100% AI. The actors signed contracts allowing to use their voice to dub the movie with AI in every language possible. The director changed a lot of scenes, especially backgrounds, also using AI. I believe she only told these things to my class, so I'm probably one of the few people who know about it. Everyone else in the country have absolutely no idea and will probably never notice. They shared the poster like crazy on the internet, because it's a sequel from a old classic here. It was probably the scariest presentation I've ever seen! That producer was literally telling us that there's NO WAY to stop AI and many jobs in the industry will DIE, and that we (future filmmakers) should prepare for it, or we're gonna be LEFT BEHIND. It was like she was announcing an apocalipse and asking us to sign a devil's pact! I went home that day wondering if it even makes sense to continue this dream of working with cinema, a dream I have since I was a child. And I say again: she's not even from Hollywood.

Im working as visual merchandiser and i already see big brands of sportswear that uses AI pictures as Campaign. Why not? you can safe on models, shooting location, styling, photographers etc. But we will stop appreciate art cause it became accessable for everyone, and is not art anymore from outstanding talented skilled people.

Machine learning is a tool in its infancy. We will have to decide when and how to use it. I honestly hope people will speak up and resist its use in art - especially in its current form. But it can have many positive impacts in other areas - diagnostic tool for doctors for example and many other cases that don't come in direct conflict with intelectual propriety law. We will see change... probably when the first politician gets involved in an AI generated scandal. :)

While I agree with all your points, I feel like it needs to be said that your solution to resisting AI generation is very short sighted. Using critique will become less effective as generation matures and is less discernible from human generated. It’s only noticeable as uncanny because of its current flaws. @Sommervillle 4 ай бұрын
@@Paper_and_Light Definatly still an artist as I do most of my work in the classic programs, i still draw my ideas beforehand but my 'art' is not the same as my client's work is that makes sense. AI is not seen as being to the level of final output, not by a long shot but it's being used to create mood and style boards already, mainly to set the tone for the ideas etc... Brands also see the potential to do 'digital brand shoots' where they don't have to rely on models schedules for example. A model could maybe allow their image rights to be used by the AI? Personally, I don't have a problem adapting, I just see it as a tool and part of a much larger pipeline rather than a tool that will do everything, it's like when graphic design shifted from pencil and pen to computer screens, I'm sure those OG pencil designers were so chuffed at the time but you just have to go with the flow or you will be left behind in most cases! That being said I don't agree with people allowing the AI to do everything and then calling that art... there will always be a place for actual art, big canvas paintings and physical sculptures etc, they will always be more impressive in my eyes! What do you think?
@Sommervillle
@Sommervillle 4 ай бұрын
@@Paper_and_Light Also when you say 'just someone who types prompts'... maybe, there probably will be those people In the industry from what I've seen you can split most people into two groups... You have the 'Creatives', the ones who have the vision, the ones who have the ideas but not all of those people are the best at getting what they want out of their heads and onto the screen and executing. Then you have 'Operators', these are the guys or gals that know the programs inside out, they aren't always the best at ideas or visions but they can produce exactly what a creative wants. In most creative pipelines (at the agency level) this is how it's done, a big team effort!

My concern is that as AI continues to get better, more refined, more accurate, that whole 'use it as a starting point' process will disappear. It will be the only process. It's come so far in such a short period of time, it feels like it might replace graphic design as a whole. That's my concern, anyways, but I'm not a professional graphic designer like yourself. I really appreciate your detailed answers, thank you. Good luck with all your creative endeavors!

its hard to believe this wasnt on purpose. professionals using AI know the flaws it has at the moment and how to workaround. NO WAY someone just did not see the giant swan...the whole composition just looks like someone trys to troll us. :D And the creative part of AI is really not what is worrying me, its mind-baffeling how many people are absolutely clueless about the changes that will come in the next decade. The positives could easily outweigh the negatives, but humans surely will fck it all up so it gets worse for most people. :D

Man, it's never about the art process but about the main messages it bares. Here you demonstrate how easy it is to create a movie poster like this. Yeah - this is easy. But the whole creative & marketing positioning (and maybe the movie?) behind the poster is and should be 100% work of human. If the poster would be center piece of something, then yeah- it shouldn't be done by AI... But in this example? Where these posters were only an awareness tool for the bigger thing behind it? AI well used.
