Brilliant riding, and a most exciting video, thank you. Took me back to my youth ! Now at 72, am happy just to potter around country lanes on a blue 954 .

Ah yes, the benefit of a slow ride is a long ride and as far as I'm concerned the blue (PB215) is the best colour scheme for the 954.

I've had a 954 since new. It is awesome on track! bridgestones or perrelli's or dunlops No problems had people go off track trying to keep up.only a steering stabilizer braided lines needed Pulls hard out of corners when twisted wide open a little head shake that's it. Perfect from there. It is the best if you know how to ride it.

very well done, bro! Excellent lap, also considering that: (Assen 2016) -> Honda RC213V Dani Pedrosa 1.49.36 However, the job done by this simulator is exaggerated :-)

David Stancu Yes, I had 03 Yamaha FZ1 (Fazer) and 09 Yamaha R1. Biggest difference, the thrust/weight. The 954 is so light, it is so fun to accelerate and turn in. The other bikes felt like heavier liter bikes, still fun in their own right....but the 954 feels like a mental 600, especially modded with performance bits and loud pipe.

David Stancu That’s funny. I’d say I had more fond memories on the FZ1 than R1...nice long trips and such. I think the 954 strikes a good balance between sport and comfort, though not as comfy as FZ1. The CBR was the last of the generation of pure sport bikes built for the road. In 2004 and beyond they became more track and GP focused. Find one and see about test riding it. Or just buy it like I did.

The SC50 may not be able to compete with modern 200bhp+ bikes, but some people, esspecially in forums tell all the time that this bike was crap even when it came out. And I think thats just bullshit, it's not even as much missing in horsepower as allways told. But the SC50 has one big weakpoint, this bike does not like third party exaust. I always used the stock exaust and GSXR750 untill K8 or old R1 had no advantage against me. Also the chassis isn't as bad as some people are claiming due to the spilt frame. And the only reason I switched to the R6 is, that with the old 954cc Bike it's not possible to race in any cup or championship.. (Know you also from insta, seen all your fancy SC50 Öhlins etc. pictures =D )

@@techam5179 Maybe the chassis is ok for the track but from my experience of riding this bike hard on Irish roads it's chassis was deeply flawed. The splitframe chassis with swingarm bolted directly to the subframe is not the problem - the real issue is the stupidly soft progressive sprung & badly damped forks, steering rake angle & triple clamp offset which are all bad for today's sporty tyres. For me (100 kg in riding gear) I would bottom out the forks all the time on the brakes with the damping going rock hard from the hydraulic bumpstocks which would then make the rear wheel lift up & wag it's tail into corners leaving you with almost no steering capability until you let off the brakes to unload the forks. That was only half the issue though as due to the extreme steering geometry the front was really nervous also on turn in & tank slapped like a bastard on hard acceleration exits - both of this fundamental flaws made the bike really unbalanced from front to rear so you had to gain more from corner exit over pushing the front end. The only real (partial) solution was heavier linear forks springs (0.95 from memory), heavier fork oil to increase damping rate, increased preload to give the forks more braking dive resistance, dropping the triple clamps on the forks to regain lost steering angle from the increased front ride height from the stiffer springs & more preload - that was just to make the bike brake & steer somewhat acceptably again. To be honest though the best way to hide the steering flaws was to use a round shape from tyre over a triangular shape. The bike was dangerous to ride on Michelin Pilot Powers it was so nervous on the frontbut felt normal on Dunlop D208s for example. I had the bike for 5 years & did over 50,000 km on it - the GSXR1000 K6 I replaced it with was objectively better in every way except for underseat storage. The halo'd aura of the last Baba San CBR954 FireBlade is more myth than legend in my view.

I agree with you about most points. They match what I expierenced with my CBR. The Fork was way to soft, and the front very nervous. But only in stock configuration. First action for me was a steering damper. Then the Fork was tuned by HK-Suspension with stiffer linear springs, 9,5N/mm for my 75kg in gear. Oil was a quite thin Öhlins R/T 19cSt, but the damping rate tripled if I remember correctly, Bumpstock removed. That worked awsome and made that quite unusable Fork you discribe into a real nice one. Tire I alwasy used Conti Race/Track Attack, they are very triangular and worked great. Fronthight maximum as you said, and depending on the track I also lowerd the Rear about 5mm at the Shock, wich shoud be 15mm Rearhight if I remeber right. If done so, the bike was incredible stable, esspecially in high speed corners. For tighter tracks I added a 6mm Shim to the Shock, regaining much of the agility for tight corners. So yes, the 954 isnt great out of the box, but if touched at the right spots it can turn out great. And the Breakes are still the best I ever rode.

I have an ‘03 954. I’m the second owner. It has 45k miles on it at this point. I had a local shop rebuild the forks because the seals were just starting to leak a little. While the front end sometimes gives me a little head shake on small power wheelies, it NEVER translates to the rest of the body and always (even before fork rebuild) lands like a feather. I live in Louisiana and we are famous for shitty roads and she’s smooth and composed through any and all corners. I also do not have a steering damper. I’ll concede that I don’t know what the 1st owner did but from the looks he did nothing. Also, I’m on basic Michelin Pilot Power front and rear. I do stupid shit on my 954 and she always keeps me feeling confident. Also, I’ve peeled out on accident more than once and she’s never given me wobbles. Hell, I’ve been airborne a few times. We have killer road bumps. No wobble, no shake. The bike can drop from under me because the road dips and it’s forgotten as quickly as it happened.

@@joetrosclair8434 For the Streets the Fork is good out of the box. But I still recommend a steering damper. Not funny if the handlebars move from one side to the other in rapid succession at 190km/h+ Doesn't happen often, but if it happens, you will sh't your pants and pray and wish for that damper.

@@techam5179 I’m sure you are correct. Sofar any highspeed lift for me has been from road bumps sending me airborne. Which happens a LOT. To date, landings have been smooth. I have only ever gotten wobble on lift, not set down, but I also don’t clutch up trying to grab high speed wheelies. Not my bag. I’ve had tons of wheelies, just all power wheelies. Most accidental. As long as I allow it to get a few inches lift instead of fighting it, I don’t see any wobble at all. Fingers crossed I don’t find a high speed wobble like you described. I prefer to keep both wheels down once I’ve engaged warp 😉

And Honda have continued with thier ethos to be conservative. They are biased to road over track imo, and i'm no pro. I hear John McGiunness never liked the 954 himself.
