@tentathesane80323 жыл бұрын
That didn't exactly happen though. The Maratha Empire collapsed in 1819 following the third Anglo Maratha war, but India wasn't transferred from the EIC's puppet nawabs to direct British rule till 1859, following the Sepoy Mutiny where the sepoys proclaimed a restoration of the *Mughal* empire, which had been previously destroyed by the Marathas. And Victoria was not proclaimed as Empress till the Delhi Durbar in 1877, so it's like a 40-60 year gap in events

@@tentathesane8032 of course, just I didn’t want to go through the whole history of events, because I just wanted to point out that the “Queen Victoria” phrase was a reference to the British influence expanding across India after the collapse of Maratha Confederacy either from the EIC or, later, the British Crown ending with Victoria becoming Empress of India

Actually, you can guarantee that this song is based on the map in 1838-1839 (whoops, not 1938-1939, typo) just based on the information in the song! (At least according to Wikipedia) Here's how: - Norbu was king of Bhutan from 1838-1850, which already limits the timeframe of the song down to those 12 years. (Also, Aden was ceded to the British in 1838, so that's the earliest possible year anyways) - Central America stopped being a single country in 1841, so the song would be inaccurate if it took place any time after that. - The Emirate of Afghanistan was briefly replaced by the Durrani Empire (which itself had been replaced by the Emirate of Afghanistan not long before) for a two-year period between 1840 and 1841, meaning that those two years would be inaccurate as well. - As such, the only two valid years for the song would be 1838 and 1839, and if you look it up, every state mentioned (except of course for the Archuchy of Austria and Aden Protectorate, but those are more technicalities than anything) did in fact exist in 1838-1839! It's seriously impressive just how much effort was put into making sure the song was accurate, here's hoping someone dares to make a full version one day. (P.S. My challenge to you, comments-readers: go look up one country from the song that you know nothing about, and read about it. Even if it's just the Wikipedia page. We all have our favorite regions, time periods, and states, but it's good to expand your horizons!)

Fun fact: Wikipedia has a (probably very incomplete) list of sovereign states in the 1830s, and _every single country_ in this song (except for Archduchy of Austria, Aden Protectorate, and of course the two places mentioned in past tense) is mentioned on the Wikipedia list. I highly suspect that this specific list was in fact what the song writers used to come up with all the exotic country names. Not that it's necessarily a _bad_ thing - it still involved loads of pretty darn obscure places! And at least that way they could be sure that everything mentioned was googleable.

I say yes and no to your comment, even though it's your "maybe." Yes, because the maps then are drawn (with some exemptions) and not captured by the satellites, which didn't exist in the 19th century. One of the examples is the Carta Hydrographica y Chorographica de las Islas Filipinas (though it was drawn way back 1734, but still a significant part of history of mapping the world), which is different from the current map, with the exemptions of Pansipit river which went narrow because of a volcano eruption. No, because maps are slightly accurate and not as bad as what was shown in Yakko's 19th Century Geography song. For example, the Philippine Islands was badly drawn in Yakko's, and was more inaccurate than the Carta Hydrographica y Chorographica de las Islas Filipinas (or Murillo Velarde map). Also, saying that inaccurate maps in Yakko's 19th Century Geography Song were a reference to how maps then were not so accurate is kind of stereotypical.

So not that inaccurate minus forgetting the Hanseatic parts of their name. Yeah, the Confederate States didn't exist till 1864. So during the year where this episode is supposed to take place, (1843), the Confederate States never existed. Heck, The Mexican-American war never happened during that time.

I believe they made the map inaccurate on purpose because they’re trying to represent what actual maps of the 1830s looked like.
@balistixmapping1973 жыл бұрын
No. It wasn't. Maps from 18th to 19th century were way better than the rest (17th century and below), so you're wrong.

I think the New Queen Victoria line refers to the colony of Victoria in Australia, although that wasn't separated from New South Wales until 1851 so that might be wrong.

the ungodly inaccuracy of the maps may have been done on purpose to represent the fact that maps up until at least the mid to late 19th century had a tendency to be more of an art piece than an actual map

Am I the only one who now wants to see that song sung by TigerStar? (2:13) Here's the problem, some sources are so full of bias, misinformation, and inaccuracies that they shouldn't be listed. As to the question of finding a good, reliable source, try something like Reuters or the Associated Press.

Yesn't, after the Napoleonic Wars Prussia incorporated many of the independent German States that make up the current Bundesland Nordrhein-Westpfalen as well as much of the southern area of Niedersachsen however most of the western German States remained entirely independent within the new confederation which replaced the HRE

Quite happy to see an improvement on the song, though i have to say that the inclusion of the Persian empire is an...interesting choice considering Iran/Persia wasn't an empire (at least not officially). Wikipedia does state the "Qajar Empire" as one of the names for the Persian state at the time, but i believe that simply refers to the Qajar dynasty itself.

Has anybody notice the Philippines (my home) lost some 50% of the islands such as Palawan, Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Bohol and Masbate, Mindanao is connected to one of the Indonesian or Malaysian islands, and they mention Sulu, which is a island and a part of the Philippines, not a country.
@CraftsmanOfAwsomenes3 жыл бұрын
The Sulu Sultanate was not controlled and administered by the Spanish out of Manila (so it was an independent country) until roughly 5 decades after this song is set. In the past it also controlled Palawan and much of Northern Borneo, but these possessions were stripped away over the centuries. The Philippines as we know it today was not a single political unit (that is controlling all the territory it does now) until the end of the period. The Sultanate itself wasn’t disestablished until 1915 by agreement with the Americans.
