Mastiffs have a reputation for being aggressive and sometimes even scary. Many people will avoid Mastiffs because of this reputation, and you can’t really blame people who are wary of them. Mastiffs are huge dogs, and some of them can be aggressive. But how aggressive are Mastiffs?

I worked across the street from a business that had Mastiffs for building protection at night. The owner would take the dogs for walks once a day, and folks would cross the street to avoid them. I was walking by to work from a late lunch, reading as I walked, when I noticed the dogs coming my way. I dropped to one knee, put both hands, palms up, out to greet the dogs. They sniffed my hands, I scratched under their chins, spoke quietly, and then slowly stood. and turned to let them pass. The owner said nobody had ever taken a moment to meet the dogs before, he said most folks are scared of them. I pointed out the simple fact, they're not on duty, in the building now, they're just your dogs. Treat any dog with the respect you hope folks would treat you with, and unlike some people, they will reciprocate that respect.

You seem to have a solid grasp of dog psychology and come across as a calm and compassionate individual! Not everyone is comfortable interacting with mastiffs on the street, but you understand that dogs can sense a person's respect and mood. It was amusing to see how surprised their owner was by your approach!

@@DOGS_and_CATS_777 thanks, I grew up with St Bernards. Big dogs can be scary to the untrained, but usually they're the calmest of all dogs

St. Bernards are generally known for their gentle nature, as they were bred to rescue people, making them more approachable. On the other hand, Mastiffs, being natural guardians, tend to be more wary of strangers. What are your thoughts on this?

@@DOGS_and_CATS_777 well St Bernards are indeed gentle, and personable, but also very protective of what is theirs. Ours sat on a guy that was arguing with my Dad, and accidently swung his shotgun toward Dad, our dog took him to the ground, sat on his chest, and was nose to nose with him, slobber running down both cheeks. Never a bark, or growl, just a close inspection of his face. Made quit an impression on the guy
