Patrick's youngest son James opens up about how his father's alcoholism affected him when he was growing up. His incredibly open and honest account of how he was able to accept his father back into his life after having shut him out for over a year. Alcoholism almost destroyed his relationship with his father. Licensed Music from Lick'd includes: "Passing Time" - Paul Mottram and "Tell A Story 2" Alex Arcoleo #alcohol #recovery #alcoholic #alcoholicsanonymous

Such an insidious disease. Everyone suffers and hard for many to understand but the alcoholic is “living” a horribly tortured life. I understand why families turn their backs. I was most fortunate. My family and most importantly my son never turned their back on me. Just for today I’m sober over 35 years. The greatest gift from God I ever received except for my son. ❤️ I enjoy your channel so much.

This young man made the right decisions throughout. Thankfully he got his father back. Some of us weren’t so fortunate. Great talk. I hope it helps other alcoholics see what trauma and destruction it brings to the family.

Oh how I wish I would have had this channel when watching my younger brother drink himself to death and destroy our family in the process. I heard my brother say over and over "I am not hurting anyone but myself". Scotty, you could not have been more wrong. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for your story. My son has been battling alcoholism in for 14 years. He will be 31 on August 3 breaks my heart, but I do know that I cannot control it. He was sober 5 mths and is now back in rehab. So hard on the entire family. I’m 63 and feel like I’m 93. So happy your dad found sobriety l.

Enjoyed this video. I lived on Holiday Isle back in the early 90s and it truly was paradise. Destin can either be a blessing with all the outdoor activities available pretty much year around or a curse with all the bars at every corner and the social scene revolving around alcohol daily.

We are all flawed. We all experience pain. We can move on and change our reality as long as we are alive. I am happy for your dad that he is able to feel his pain work through it and not hide with alcohol. Alcohol steals your life. Alcohol is a time thief. And time is never enough.

Thank you so much for your vulnerability and your honesty and courage to share your story. It will help so many others who were and are in your situation. So painful to watch a parent lose control. It is hard not to take it personally when you are young. Glad your dad is doing well. All the best to you in your life.

One of his parents is a severe alcoholic, consider it may be possible he wasn’t taught some basic life skills due to variables caused by being raised in a family with an active alcoholic that needed to be managed and dealt with.

So happy for you and your family that your dad is sober. My son is now 40 and his dad chose alcohol over having a relationship with him. I divorced him when my Son was 6 years old and raised him on my own. He still has nothing to do with his dad and actually will not even acknowledge him as a dad and he is right. Throughout all these years he never received any phone calls or visits from his so called dad. Not even a birthday wish. I feel bad for my son but he is best off without him. Last I heard he is still drinking heavily. I am surprised he is still alive at 66 years old.

James, I knew there were problems between you and your dad when the additon was being constructed on the lake house. I just thought it was father son butting heads as they will. I had no idea. He hid it well along with you and your mom. He is truly a great man when he is sober. I trust him with my life. I miss the whole family. WI.FRIEND
