To be fair, Ali's approach is just to get someone playing "something/anything" that they know, so they catch the "piano bug". At this point, the goal is to "keep interest" not "teach". Then when the student is addicted and motivated then you can bring in the "why", the counting, the inversions, etc. That's why on guitar you learn AC/DC, that first easy riff is addictive

The method used in this video is covered in a system called piano for all ,this would just be the first book .It's been about for years and the later books and videos go way further than this initial simplistic approach

It’s interesting. His approach to piano is how I’ve approached ukulele and guitar my whole life - legitimately only looking at chord and tab charts to play the music, never knowing what actual notes make up a chord or WHY they make up that chord. I’ve really only recently realized how sucky this approach has been at the age of 31. I’m learning to play piano for the first time and starting at the bottom, learning how to read music. I’m not going to lie, it’s hard for me. But, it is vital. C Major scales with both hands? My god, how tricky is THAT? I really think leaving things like that out and expecting that someone could play moving chords with the right hand while “spamming” keys on the left hand is kind of extreme. Although grueling, I know that being able to do a C major scale with both hands will allow me to really connect both my hands and it will eventually click. Getting that down will set me up to really get other movements down. Honestly, I got really excited the first time I was able to do the C Major scale in each hand separately for the first time. There is still joy in learning the fundamentals. Then again, I’m only on day 4 or so, so I’m sure that will change. 😂 On the other hand, I do think it’s fun to every now and then learn something random. I did learn how to play the intro to a song with relatively basic chords. I still do not remember the names of those chords, the notes I’m hitting while playing, and why it all works. It’s interesting because I do know the notes, I just have to stare at the keys before I’m certain. I just think learning this new instrument is breathing new life into me and even learning how to read music is fun for now. I think it’s really going to open up my guitar and ukulele skills as well.

I love your enthusiasm! It will definitely help your guitar and ukulele playing, particularly if you are learning the theory with it! Learning scales can be tricky because of the fingers, but as you practice and get better remember to look back and see how far you have come in the short space of time, that will help keep you motivated 😊

I'm also just starting and at some point i knew some of the keys on the piano that match some of the lines on the sheet but i didn't knew what notes they are, so i stopped for the day because i thought it's the wrong way to continue. I guess the CDE.... notation is faster but in Europe we use do re mi.....

@@cristibalutaah, yes I’m learning the do re mi as well! A little tricky for me as opposed to the CDE, but I’m using Hoffman Academy as a resource too and he uses do re mi (soflege, i think it’s called) in conjunction with CDE. His content is geared towards kids, but isn’t so kiddie that adults cannot learn too. Keep it up, you got this!

Oh my...It seems you're really upset about this video🤣. And I have to say that you're absolutely right!!! Why? Now, I'm a self learner since 3 years. I practice on the average an hour a day. And I think I can play "Perfect" in any key also with arpeggios etc. BUT as you say there's a lot of MUSIC THEORY knowledge behind that I built up through time. Without that, even if I were able to play like he claims one could (via spamming, going ham on the notes etc etc - and I have absolutely no clue what he means because I don't think he does either!), it would be nothing more than just copying what he's doing, sort of like in a computer game. And when someone gives me the chord chart of a second song to play, I would be lost!!! So you have every right to be upset; I would actually be very angry in your place! I'm actually kind of angry with my only 3 years of learning / playing experience AND knowledge of MUSIC THEORY!

To be fair to your claim about c major, trombone players don't learn the c major scale first. Same for most other instruments in other keys.

I know nothing about music but this seems just like Abdaal's take on listening books on 5x the speed to be ultra productive etc. The take on being seen as someone who knows how to play is also a bit weird grifty take on playing music.
