Mohamed Mossadegh became PM of Iran in 1951, he had a plan on how he was going to help Iran achieve self-sufficiency and prosperity by nationalising Iran’s immensely profitable oil industry. But the Western interests he cut out were never going to just accept this. So the British and Americans set about to undermine Mossadegh and re-establish the old status quo in Operation Ajax. The subsequent blowback from the 1953 Coup made America deeply unpopular with wide segments of Iranian society; and consequently established a reputation of the USA to be untrustworthy, tyrannical and dangerous throughout various Middle Eastern societies as they saw their own nations fall prey to America’s aggressive foreign policy in the Cold War milieu.

Iranian Mullahs love America because they installed them. Remember Khomenie was groomed in France? America built their nuke plant in the 60s and Israel supplied them many arms. When America gave arms embargo on Iran it was Israel who secretly sold the American aircraft parts to Iran bypassing the US embargo. Ronald Reagan got caught supplying arms to those Mullah Majoos. Stop your BS please.

Steven Kinser, one of the best scholars in the Iran afgairs, once said: "When we Americans wag our fingers in the face of Iranians, telling them why they don't have democracy, those Iranians who know their history would shout back at us by saying that they did have a democracy. And a very vibrating and functioning democracy until CIA and MI6 destroyed it in 1953 by overthrowing Mossadegh, the DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED Prime minister of Iran in a coup.

Great piece of work. For me the most interesting aspect of your piece is that it contributes to exposing the very sloppy nature of many Western academia and intellectuals who blame all anger and grievances of that part of the world utterly on Islam and the regional culture and the way of life they have embarked on. And they turn their blind eye to the fact that how spectacularly the Western colonialism, aggression, greed, patronizing, double standard policies and behavior, etc, have contributed to the situation the people of that region are currently in.

If anything, this documentary explains how Mossadegh, the ulama, Tudeh and other characters sabotaged Iran's fortunes on their own, if not more than the Western powers/outsiders. It was all kinds of corrupt groups inside the country that toppled Mossadegh. They only needed a small push and they did the rest of the mayhem.

@@taliabraverU.S. corporations, with the aid of government policy, have ruined the local economies of most of Latin America by draining its natural resources and land and shifting their economies to serve Western corporate interests. They achieved so by feeding crumbs off the table to the corrupt leadership in some countries. For those countries whose leadership couldn’t be bribed, U.S. backed coups attempted and often succeeded in replacing popular governments with puppet regimes. Countries who successfully resisted were met with with crippling international sanctions forced by the U.S. and misrepresentation in the media and educational system. Western countries in Europe have done the same in various parts of the world. This continues to happen to this day. People want to come to the West because the West has become RICH off of the POVERTY it has created in the countries whose immigrants flood their borders. Immigrants who it then turns around and blames for much of its problems. Read The Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano. This is documented fact, and actively ignored in Western political discourse.

Dear Hikma, Thank you for another well researched and developed piece. Scant few Americans understand Iranian History or Islam, so your work performs an important function as historical education to non Iranian and Islamic eyes. As I watched this piece I could help but wonder if Ayatollah Kashani would have found the Islamic Theocracy that emerged from Ayatollah Khomeini and his followers application of "their" version of Sharia Law and its promulgation into the larger ( and much more diverse ) Iranian society, as too Liberal or too Conservative from his vision? Most Americans see Iran as a closed society comprise of a single bloc of constituents, and do not understand that not all Iranians who supported Ayatollah Khomeini, wanted a theocracy or even sharia law.

America wants to profit from Iranian resources like it does from certain other countries. As soon as the Iranians decided that they were more than capable of determining their own future and America decided that they would die. The Iranians have withstood the might of the great deceiver for more than for more than 60 years and it is very clear now that America will never be able to deter the Iranian people from be a glorious people.

Not really The DPRK has its roots in anti Japanese resistence started in 1926, while SK was created by Americans propping up former Japanese collaborators in 1945. There shouldn't have to be a debate between these, it's clear which one has more legitimacy but unfortunately because of other factors people would have the other be the only one. Korea would not be divided like this if the US hadn't intervened for no good reason. I can only hope that what was sought out in 1926 can finally come to fruition and that the DPRK will recover swiftly.

It's very bad that they couldn't work out a deal where the investors received dividends for their investments with a large proportion going to Iran without deposing elected officials. Typically nationalized industries, whether in the West or less industrialized countries, don't make money and become corrupt. Obviously Britain was broke after the war and needed significant payback for its investments and profits. A compromise of decreasing proportions of profits to the UK over time could have helped. The investors put their money into the oil company and had a right to a significant proportion of profits, but needed to pay a substantial tax for extracting natural resources.

I am an Iranian. Those who chant 'death to America' dont give a damn about Mosadegh. In fact they dislike him as well. The reason some Iranians had grudges against US was that for year and years, USA was the sourse and force for progress while some Iranians fell behind and they resented US for it. They along side communists, Islamists and a few pro mosadegh nationalists, joined together in revolution against shah... pro Mosadegh ppl were the closest to the USA which were forced out of the government by Islamists and the communists...
