The Beatles were famous before going to the US, and they wrote their own songs too.

In the beginning they did cover other people's' songs too. Twist and Shout (Phil Medley and Bert Berns) is a good example.

Another reason why so few Americans have passports is that you are forced to stay home. Americans have an average of ten days of paid vacation, of which at least three-four of those days will be used as sick days, leaving you with just seven days per year. Add on the fact that 80% of Americans are living, paycheck to paycheck, and you have a culture where most can't travel.

Spot on. And they don’t like money leaving the country and being spent overseas. The US has complete control over its people and their money!

Oh yeah, outside of the USA we all notice that the movies have to have Americans in if it will be shown in America. Even one of the most classic English movies of all time "The Great Escape" has a bonus American in it so they would be interested (mind you, it is Steve McQueen so he was a bonus). South Korean fantasy creature movies have at least 1 token American. When the British TV show Red Dwarf was going to be remade for America, they didn't want most of the cast, but they liked the one that had an American accent so kept him.

Hi Xee & Cyn, not only did the US not suffer devastation like most of the rest of the combatants, they were the only country that made an immense amount of money out of WW2. Every other country was either a waste land, or flat broke by 1945.

Canada too, but to a much lesser degree, vastly smaller population to be able to create at the rate the US could.

Sorry Ladies but "America", or moe accurately The USA doesn't have everything for travelling and travellers. When I travelled the USA for a month, it was frankly boring. Same road travelling hour after hour, same language, same culturemore or less the same scenery. Yes there are some great places like Yosemite etc,but in Europe in the same time you could visit over 40 Countries and cultures, and find over 200 languages.

Shame you seem to have missed out then. The USA has a variety of cultures that merged together but in certain areas you find a lot more of the original culture, such as the food, traditions and architecture. Southern food is different from the North (where they eat more German style food), being more focussed on spices due to the proximity to Mexico and the Caribbean, whereas if you head East you find more herbs and Mediterranean style foods because of the Italian influence. Cajun food and culture is another distinct highlight. Then obviously there is the native American culture which though it has been swamped by the rest of the world, it is still there.

Out of interest, in March 2024, I compared the news stories on a UK TV channel as compared to a US TV channel. For the UK I used the BBC evening bulletin and for the US I used the NBC one. The results were interesting. BBC Domestic stories: 7 (54%) Stories involving both the UK and a foreign country: 2 (15%) Purely foreign stories: 4 (31%) NBC Domestic stories: 9 (90%) Stories involving both the US and a foreign country: 1 (10%) Purely foreign stories: 0 (0%) I think that tells you all you need to know about the lack of knowledge that most Americans have about the world outside their borders.

America made money during and after WW2! The total cost of America's involvement in World War II was estimated at $330 billion in 1945 dollars. However, the war also had a significant impact on the American economy, resulting in unprecedented economic growth and prosperity: . Gross national product (GNP): The GNP grew from $88.6 billion in 1939 to $135 billion in 1944. . War-related production: War-related production increased from 2% of GNP in 1939 to 40% in 1943. . Employment: Unemployment fell by about 10 million between 1938 and 1944, while private and military employment each rose by 10 million. . Wages: The average earnings of the bottom 20% of workers grew by around 68%. . Tax revenue: Federal receipts as a share of GDP rose from 6.7% in 1941 to 19.8% in 1945. This increase in tax revenue has remained elevated since the end of the war. . Post-war prosperity: The US reached new heights of prosperity in the years after World War II, with the GNP skyrocketing to $300 billion by 1950 and topping $500 billion by 1960. AND war loans. The United Kingdom paid off its World War II debt to the United States on December 29, 2006, with a final payment of $83 million. This was six years late due to the British government suspending payments in 1956, 1957, 1964, 1965, 1968, and 1976. The British government cited impractical exchange rates as the reason for the suspensions. The debt was the result of a $3.75 billion loan from the US to the UK government, which was to be repaid over 50 years. The UK also took out a loan from Canada in 1946, which also had to be repaid. The US provided the UK with a significant amount of aid during World War II, including military aid, munitions, and supplies. Many Americans also volunteered to help defend the UK from enemy attacks.

@Cyn, I think you are misunderstanding what he meant when he said Americans only used American sites. There was nothing stopping them using other sites (same as now), but in the early days the internet was mostly used by nerds and people at work. These days we use it for playing games with friends and watching movies, social media etc. Most sites in the early days that were in English were American or British. The vast majority of sites were home made hobby sites, because in the early days it was common to get some free web space with your internet account so you could host a website.

I think maybe the British comedy shines a light on one of the reasons. In Britain we tend to expect comedy to be not to everyone's taste, also challenging and maybe even make you question your own morals, however in America the TV executives dare not risk showing anything challenging in case some people don't like it, because if the viewers dip the advertising revenue may not be maximised. Many American shows only exist for product placement and sponsors. In the UK TV series are often only 6 episodes, 8 if you are lucky. In the USA, at around episode 10 or 11 there is a half way break mid-season before carrying on for another 10 or 11. UK is about high quality stories, while USA is about high volume of stories so every demographic is included (mustn't miss a potential sale !) The economic reason Americans are treated like mushrooms (kept in the dark and fed on shit), is because clever people make wiser choices and don't waste money on things they don't need. The political reason Americans are being treated like children is because it makes them easier to manipulate (however they are not always so easy to control).
