The fact that the US is so large is one reason many people don't travel outside of it. Heck, most people in the US don't travel to every state. It takes at least 5 days to drive from Maine to Washington. You could drive across the whole of Europe in that time.

@luminiferous1960

No it is not! The U.S. fought the American Civil War, which had the largest number of American military fatalities in history, to decide, among several issues, the question of whether or not states had the right to be separate from and not under the jurisdiction of the United States of America, with the decision being that they cannot be separated from the United States and must remain under its jurisdiction since the Union forces won the American Civil War. Furthermore, Article VI, Paragraph 2 of the U.S. Constitution, commonly referred to as the Supremacy Clause, establishes that the federal constitution, and federal law generally, take precedence over state laws, and even state constitutions. This means that when state law and federal law conflict, federal law displaces, or preempts, state law. Federal laws apply throughout the United States. Federal laws apply in every state. Examples of Federal laws include Immigration law, Bankruptcy law, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) laws, Federal anti-discrimination and civil rights laws that protect against racial, age, gender and disability discrimination, Patent and copyright laws, and Federal criminal laws such as laws against tax fraud and the counterfeiting of money.

@@zacharyliles8657 I know you were speaking colloquially, but the idea that is expressed by your colloquial statement is not only literally wrong, but also dangerous, and therefore, is not the "best" way to think about each state. State and local governments considering themselves to be able to make laws and take actions opposed to Federal law has had dire consequences in the past. I cited the American Civil War as the most dangerous example of this, but there are others, for example, some Southern state governments defying the Supreme Court rulings against segregation during the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Today we have some states, counties, and local governments defying Federal immigration laws by establishing so-called sanctuary jurisdictions in violation of Article VI, Paragraph 2 of the U.S. Constitution.

The United States is so big that it's almost exactly 1 to 1, with Canada in size. In fact, when including the grand total area of water and land, Canada is just a mico fraction 1.5% bigger than the U.S. However, the U.S. still has a slightly larger land mass. The U.S. also has far more habitable land than any other country since it sits in the Goldilocks zone of the World in relation to sun and climate. And it has access to more climates than any other nation on Earth. 😎

I very much enjoyed your reaction ☺ I am a resident of San Bernardino Co., California, originally having grown up in Los Angeles Co. I love the fact that Laurence called out the Inland Empire. These places are huge and outside the city areas there are vast amounts of open land, still. As for traveling the US, I drove from Ontario, California to Ft. Knox, Ky when my son graduated from Boot Camp. I was on the road for that trip, 16 hours a day for 2 days with minimal food/fuel/restroom breaks and the most direct route I could take. There was no sightseeing along the way. If you would want to enjoy that trip, it would probably be at least a 4-5 day trip to take in some sights, get a full nights rest and eat somewhere you didn't have to drive through and eat on the go. I love your videos. Usually I am more of a lurker and hit the 'like' button, but couldn't resist a comment this time ❤

@@BritPopsReact I definitely had a portable CD player with me, lol! Even so, I still had long stretches where I was communing with my own thoughts. Although I did not stop to sight see, there were many sights to see along the way driving and I marveled at the changes in scenery, from the desert landscapes of California, Arizona and New Mexico to more of a plains type scenery going through the northern area of Texas and into Oklahoma. Heading into Missouri, those flat golden plains soon became green with trees everywhere off the side of the freeway and at the time, the dogwoods were blooming giving the illusion of lace in these forested areas as I zipped by and those wooded areas gave way to farmlands through Illinois and Indiana. It was amazing and someday, I would love to take the trip again but with time on my hands to actually take it all in and enjoy the trip to the fullest. Thanks for the response ❤

This really puts into perspective how small the UK really is from our side. Although small in land mass, you are very mighty from a world view. Not nearly as populated as the lower 48 but then again Wyoming is also not that populated.

You really do have to take any of the numbers from Alaska with a grain of salt. They just wouldn't make sense anywhere else. Take the Capital of Juneau for instance. Anywhere else, the city of Juneau would be counted as a city of about 24,000 people, with an area of 14 square miles - but Juneau counts over 3,200 square miles within its city limits (including over 500 square miles of water). Thus, it includes another 8,000 people... bringing the total population to just over 32,000. So, the "city of Juneau has an average population density of 10 persons per square mile. Hardly what most people would define as a "city." All of Alaska contains about 750,000 people.

To go off from your intro where you mentioned people telling you about their home states. I was born and raised in the state of Washington. Where we nearly have every climate type with our state, minus a swamp and frozen tundra. WA has a lower GDP than Cali but we have 4, global companies that rival the giants of the Golden state: Star bucks ☕️ Amazon 📦 Microsoft 💻 Boeing 🛩 Also, the Seattle/Puget sound area gets likened to Scotland/England because of all the rain. So were you both to visit I'd wager you'd enjoy it because it'd feel like home despite being far abroad. 13:11 When visiting Boston in '16 I met a guy who had no idea about the sheer size of the US, particularly the regions west of the Mississippi. To him it was inconceivable that you could drive for more 5 miles and see no human development. Because of the population density of New England and the generally smaller states east of the Mississippi. Georgia is the biggest state on the east side, but as you saw it's not on the list of 11 states bigger than the UK.

For example, from Portland (which is the city that I live in) to Salem you have to drive 46 miles/takes 50 minutes to get to. This is probably the shortest drive between major cities. Another thing is that Oregon has only 4 million residents and only 1/8 of that lives in Portland. I’m from Central part of Illinois! Our entire state mostly votes Republican but because Chicago also known as Cook County and it’s Collar Counties(surrounding counties) are all Democrat and more populous, they out vote the rest of the state which is absolutely awful plus Chicago/Cook County are notoriously corrupt. We have a motto here in Illinois: “Come to the State where our Governors make our license plates.” Prisoners make our license plates for our cars and we have quite a few Governor’s who have went to prison for their corrupt dealings while in office. Our current Governor was caught frauding the State of Illinois on his taxes out of 100,000’s of dollars before he ran for Governor. This guy was born a billionaire. He purposely had people take the toilets out of one of his Gold Coast mansions just so he could list it as uninhabitable during tax time so he wouldn’t have to pay $300,000 in taxes. He got caught but didn’t go to jail or even get arrested. He simply said, “I will just pay what I owe.” Yet no one knows if he ever paid it, then he runs for Governor like 3 months later and wins! Only in corrupt Chicago/Cook County. If anyone of us had defrauded the State on our income tax whether on purpose or not we would have been arrested and put in jail possibly prison and for a lot less money than $300,000. And yet he becomes Governor. The Democrats have ran our state into the ground. People are leaving in droves. Yet we can’t vote them out because Chicago pretty much outvotes the rest of the State and cheats to boot and make laws to keep themselves in power with no vote by the people on these laws. It’s so frustrating! I still believe we live in the best country but the corruption in our Federal and some States needs to be rooted out, it’s like a cancer that sabotages and erodes the workings of our excellent Constitution.

@gbulmer
@gbulmer Жыл бұрын
In general, UK Highways (Motorways) are comparable to US Highways ①. UK's are mostly 3 lanes, with especially busy sections widened to 4. The speed limits are uniformly 70mph, but some people regularly drive at 80-85mph. Traffic does slow down, often significantly around 'rush-hours' at junctions to larger town and cities. A big problem is diffusing high volumes of Motorway traffic into larger towns and cities with old, narrow road systems, laid out before large scale car ownership. That's why our rail system is so popular. Many towns and cities have main-line (connected to other large towns and cities) rail stations near their centre. Then local public transport (buses, trains, trams) to reach the final destinations. It'd take about 2 hours for me to drive the 100-ish miles between my local train station and the large London train station the train gets me to (part of that is spent in traffic towards the London end). It takes about an hour (58 minutes) for the fast train to do the same journey. There's a train roughly every 30 minutes, and we can book seats. There are slower trains which have many more stops in smaller towns. They take about 1¾hours. So comparable to driving. However, the train is preferable to me because I can sit back, and work or relax. These slower trains mean there's a train every 15 minutes or so. I often get one on the way home, when I'm not so bothered about journey time. I'm not driving, so it is reasonably relaxed. The main-line trains I use have power sockets at every table, so I can get work done on a laptop without worrying about its battery. Some trains have free WiFi. Some buses too. So I can chat to colleagues for free, getting updates on work or the client, even exchanging presentation material. Some old colleagues formed a company. They commonly negotiate with London-based clients that the 2 hour round-trip journey is productive, and counts as an hour, or even more, of the working day. So their staff get paid to take the train. Summary: The UK is so small, trains and other public transport can be much more effective than driving, especially for work. The scale of the UK is so small compared to the US, UK train journeys feel similar to flying in the US, except UK trains often deliver passengers into the centre of towns and cities, and their's no checkin. Best Wishes. ☮ ① I visited the USA several times each year throughout the 90s for work and visiting friends. I lived and worked in the USA for more than half the 2000s.

@@gbulmer Wow!! What a great overview and comparison. Thank you. I wish the U.S. would develop a comprehensive public transportation system, borrowing best practices from the U.K. and other nations who have pretty much perfected it. While in the military, I lived in Germany for 5 years and enjoyed using their public transportation too. I only visited London once during that time, but was impressed by the transportation there as well. Your background gives you a unique perspective and I really appreciate you sharing your comparison.

Kentucky here. I love out "in the country" as we say. We recently got a neighbor across the road, and one beside us, although about 10 acres separate us. I feel absolutely closed in! We're hoping to sell our home and move farther out. I couldn't imagine living where it is house after house, everyone piled on top of one another. Of course we've lived in the country for over 25 years now, so we're kind of a different, maybe dying breed.

I'm not sure why Alaskan cities are so large. Probably goes back before it was a state. Large areas for cities are also in smaller population states like Montana & Oklahoma. So it probably does have something to do with having a lot of land without many people. I'm in Texas & I never considered size of UK where I am. Taking a train from Darlington to Leice . . . Lieche . . . Leicte . . . How ever the hell you spell that city in the midlands. LOL!! That train trip is plenty long enough for me. But the UK does seem crowded.

The population of London is about 9.6 million in 2023, and it is the 36th most populous city in the world. The most populous city in the U.S. is New York City with a population of about 7.9 million in 2023, and it is the 48th most populous city in the world. Therefore, the UK has a more populous city than the most populous city in the U.S., which may be some consolation to the Brits. BTW, Tokyo, Japan is the most populous city in the world in 2023, with a population of about 32.2 million, much more than New York City and London combined. Also, since you mentioned Australia, with an area of 7,682,300 sq km, Australia is only slightly smaller than the United States. It is the smallest continent on our planet and the 6th largest country. The area of the United States is 9,372,610 sq km making it the fourth largest country in the world. The three countries larger in area than the USA are Russia (17,098,242 sq km), Canada (9,984,670 sq km), and China (9,706,961 sq km). Perhaps the Brits can also take consolation in the fact that the Commonwealth nation of Canada is larger in area than the USA.

I would like to see a video comparing the populations of cities comparing the UK and the US. Many cities on the east and west coasts are very heavily populated. New York City for example is 302 square miles(roughly 782 square km)and has a population of 8.4 million. It's the most densely populated city in the country. That's just the 5 Boros, not the greater metropolitan area.

Counting all of San Bernardino County as the metropolitan area for the city of San Bernardino is ridiculously misleading... see my previous comment. Multiple federally designated wildernesses, and military bombing ranges IMO hardly fit into the definition "Metropolitan Area". If you were to be realistic, the Riverside, Ontario, San Bernardino metropolitan area would be about 1/3 of that listed... which is still enormous... and it is also contiguous with the "greater Los Angeles metropolitan district".

@@lyngusrobb5323 He did, and this isn't his fault - the stats and maps show the metropolitan area extending to the state border, which IMO, is simply ridiculous... that would be saying that Amboy is within the "metropolitan area".

Ya 100 miles is no big deal here. I do it regularly. To cross country from Ike Seattle to Miami is like a week by car. From Seattle to NYC it's 5 hrs by plane. That's thousands of miles. And Alaska is by far the largest state, dwarfing every other state and I think making up nearly a third of America contiguous mass. There isn't much there but pristine wilderness as I think it's the most beautiful place on earth. They do not allow a lot of building and logging and development for vast areas as they don't want to happen to them that it has in urban America. And FYI guys learn to use the pause button. You talked over Lawrence most of the video.

@Brit Pops React I think it's more important to pause than to talk over the video and miss important parts of it as then you aren't reacting fully. Ppl can just get over thr pausing. They can watch the actual video then. But a reaction means a reaction to the whole video, not just parts you're quiet for. Btw another factoid. Parts of Alaska are dry, meaning no booze.this could be bc the native population get ravaged by alcoholism. Also super expensive. A gallon of milk can be upwards of $8! Thats 6 pounds Iooked up
