Quick tip long lines are better and more efficient at making money in this game. The amount of money you get scales up with distance traveled and scales down with the time it takes goods to get there. But if you got a train blazing at top speed on a long line distances are really big and done in short times. So counterintuitively it would have been better to pick up coal at one side of the map and drop it off at the other side of the map because if you link up industries close to each other you get a shit distance and your train reaches no speed at all. This is also why the top players graphs are so wonky. The periods that their super profitable long distance trains arrive they make a lot of money but this doesn't happen every period. There are even more reasons long lines are op but it basically all boils down to optimising distance/time for as little capital as posible.

It's very easy to make enormous ammounts of money with large systems but you can't make them too large or trains will start getting lost.
