An ordinary American girl, Hope Cooke, became the wife of the king of the small Asian state of Sikkim in 1963. Their love story was like a fairy tale despite the significant difference in age, origin, and cultural background. However, the fairy tale soon turned into a nightmare. Why did they have to get a divorce? And where is Hope Cooke today, 60 years later?

I married a Chinese and moved to Malaysia with him. It didnt take long before he decided that other women were tasty. The marriage lasted 10 years and I moved back to my country with my daughter. Living in Malaysia was certainly an interesting part of my life, and I rarely regret this phase, however I realise that infidelity doesnt sit well with me.

I’m a Korean who married a British and moved to the UK following our wedding. That was 20 years ago. We had some bumps and hardships on the way, but we still love and respect each other deeply. Marriage, any marriage, isn’t easy for anyone. If you’re choosing someone from a very different background, some confusions are inevitable but if you love each other as if you cannot even imagine your life without this person, you can overcome any obstacles (apart from infidelity or abuse).

Exactly and people often think it is the cultural differences but not really. It is other issues too. People of the same backgrounds divorce all the time. If you love each other that much then you can overlook most things besides abuse and cheating or something very serious.

I remember when she married and thought it was very romantic, a fairy tale. I was vaguely aware many years later that there was a divorce. Marriage is not easy. I didn't read her book but I doubt the marriage broke up because of the culture, more likely his infidelity and their growing distance as he aged. Her second marriage didn't last long and he was American. She has certainly had an interesting life. So sad about the death of her mother and her father abandoning her.

What a fascinating story. I agree that when you enter into a marriage with someone of a different race, a different culture and different social status in all likelihood, there will be problems. About 50 years ago, in my late teens, I fell in love with a handsome, German soldier. He was an atheist and I a conservative Catholic but that did not matter to me because he was my knight in shinning armor. We got married a few years later and, afterwards, I left family, work and home to reside in his country. The next 10 years were pure hell as problems evolved over cultural differences, his womanizing, and verbal abuse. The marriage was irreparable and I came back home with my young child. Fast forward. History repeats itself. My son married a villager from an Asian country, a third world country, both thinking they would have a good marriage. Their cultural, social, and religious beliefs are overwhelming. The marriage is broken but they stay together for the sake of their child, my little granddaughter. My daughter-in-law is a kind, humble woman but my son resents that they can’t even communicate due to their different social status and her lack of education. They have both realized they made a huge mistake in getting married. Both want a divorce but neither wants to leave the child with the other. I just feel so sorry for the little one 😢. She loves them both. I pray to God for this situation to have a good outcome. Greetings from west Texas 🌞🌵🌻

I've spent time in Sikkim. To this day it is an elite place. It is called the Last Shangri-La. Although now a part of India, we needed to show our passports to enter so that photocopies could be made. We also had to have a passport sized photo and apply for a visa to enter. Pockets and purses were searched for cigarettes and smoking is illegal. Only organic meats, fruits and vegetables are allowed to be produced in Sikkim. There is a huge emphasis on nature and ecology in this state. Here there are several universities/colleges of law, agriculture, horticulture, medical, dental, veterinary, nursing and pharmaceutical. It is indeed a rather elite state and it is the cleanest place in India, as people are fined for littering.

That's absolute rubbish. Common grounds for a marriage are love, mutual respect, trust and a similar background & education. When love isn't there initially one MUSTN'T marry. It's a sin and a waste of one's life. (Life is giving to us by God so marrying someone we DO NOT LOVE is blasphemy as we are only allowed to come together in love. Marrying for procreation, money or wealth is extremely wrong, because these are worldly things which one should not involve oneself too much with. They are of no importance in our afterlife.)

While this story has been told from her perspective, you need to know she wasn't holier than thou. Absolute BS! Sonia Gandhi married Rajeev Gandhi...she's desperately clinging to power in India. Very nice channel. I didn' know about a lot of the people you featured. I myself was married to a man 17 years younger than me. It's not the age that separated us but his mental illness (He refused all help. Even when i had him hospitalized, he would always end up getting out. Today, he's homeless on the street, after he tried to kill me a couple times.) I've also been in relationships where my oartner was older, 17 and even 27 years. In some cases it can be a factor, others not. I think it's always on a case to case basis. I tried to find Hope Cook's memoir on the library website, it's not there but there is a novel by an author with that name. Wonder if it's her!

I think if you marry into royalty, you have to know it’s not for love. For centuries, the royalty only married to consolidate money and power, and these two things make them believe they don’t have to follow the vows of marriage. I’d have done my own thing as the king’s wife; I’d take care of my children and do lots of charity work and engagements. I’d try to make the country better for the people. Then I wouldn’t be worried about what he was doing.

Princess Diana was the perfect example of 'marry into royalty'. She did 'her own thing'. She was loved and respected by the world because of it. She was 'the people's princess'. But nothing could take away the heartaches and humiliation she felt knowing her husband was doing another woman. In the end, she chose to divorce him.

I think if you truly love someone and can't imagine life without your special person and get married there should be nothing you can't work out, except for infidelity. Cheating is most likely a deal breaker most people cannot get over because it destroys the trust you once had. Trust is needed in a marriage in order to be happy.

She already has wealth of her own even before she met King Sikkim In all of history, there's never been a king who was faithful to one woman only, no matter what race they came from, but in Chinese annals, they had one emperor who practiced monogamy and had only one wife, his empress till his death so I can't understand why the world is judging a king for adultery or polygamy, they were not even christians. Christianity decrees monogamy compared to non-christian religions

@BrokenButterfly100 You need to be careful, as the laws in Pakistan are not in support of women or wives, but believe me, not all cultures are like Pakistan. I am Jewish and my faith teaches women are created closer to the Divine than men are, and husbands should approach their wives with the same respect they show the Creator. You have bad people in any culture, but I know my brother was raised to cook, clean, and care for his children, not to assist his wife, but because it is his duty as a husband. My mother always said to him growing up that she never wanted his future to come to her and say what kind of man did you raise. He now has two small children and shares cleaning and child care with his wife, while doing all the cooking. This is not considered extraordinary but only what is appropriate. I promise you, but all cultures raise their men so poorly.

Somethings I want to add is that sikkim was an independent state but its security , foreign policy and everything was managed by India. Second thing the woman was not as good as depicted here it is well know fact here in India that she later became a CIA agent and was souring relations between India and Sikkim and at that time China wanted to invade sikkim and take it under its control to completely cut off India's Siliguri corridor , Indian government knew all this and finally took complete control over Sikkim and made it a Indian state with voting more than 97 percent voted in favor of India. Conclusion - She was a CIA agent .

Yes, once you learn to live within the constraints, you outgrow them and want more. But then you also grow more ambitious. That is what happened. She probably wanted Sikkim to be a sovereign country with her as Queen. I wish she had looked at the map at that time and she would have had a fulfilling life was as a quasi-sovereign when her husband passed on. India was a princely state of British India, but with a difference. Unlike most other princely states, the British-Sikkim treaty of 19th century. did not make clear whether the relationship was a suzerainty; just an overlooked British bureaucratic technical detail or one more of deliberate British tricks. When India became independent, Sikkim accepted protected status with India whereby India was responsible for stuff such as defense and foreign affairs. If Hope Cooke had looked at the map she would have found that India could possibly have been cut off from the ENTIRE territory east of Sikkim if China chose to do so. That would include the ENTIRE seven Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. And remember that Hope Cooke was doing her thing less than ten years after China had attacked India and occupied chunks of its territories, which it holds to this date. Now name a single country that would have tolerated such as thing. I do feel very sad for the travails in pain that she suffered in Sikkim as well as prior to Sikkim.

Other than their husbands cheating on them and them cheating on their husbands, the comparison doesn’t sit right.

King and his wife were happy with each other untill king was relatively young & was able to give here luxuries of queen. She came from humble background & it was dream life for her. As king started getting old, she cheated on him. There is absolutely no mention of king having affairs with any other women apart from queen's own book. Infact king never married or had second wife which was very normal that time. When kingdom was acceded to India & king had to relinquish his luxuries, she left the king for good. King died alone & soon after she married & lived a comfortable life with support she got from treasury of erstwhile kingdom. The book is very much her own version, which is not necessarily true. Go to Sikkim, they think otherwise of queen. I think key to successful marriage is standing by your partner in good & bad times. If youth & money is criteria for marriage, it is bound to break.
