Filling the gaps of the story by yourself is not an endeavor every player will undertake, and it's not like the imagination of each player will come up with worthwhile interpretations. Add to that the many lore speciasts on KZbin that players will watch to understand the story because it is far too cryptic and fragmented to interpret for a lot of if not most players. By the time you complete a dungeon most likely you will have forgotten about the item description you read a few hours prior. While I appreciate Miyazaki's approach to storytelling (among other things, it draws in players who are usually annoyed by long cutscenes and dialogues), it's not exactly unique to him and foregoing direct storytelling is not necessarily the better choice for a game designer / storyteller / director. I feel story-heavy games, as well as games with a straightforward story, have become sort of overlooked and underappreciated. We should not dismiss how challenging it can be to tell a story the 'normal' way.
