The last of the Magna Graecia miniseries - it's been an incredible journey into the Ancient Greek roots of Italy & Sicily, not to mention learning things I had no prior knowledge of around the indigenes: Sicels, Opici, Etruscans and more! This video looks at how the Phoenicians became Carthaginians to challenge Greek expansionists, and the fallout between the Greeks of Italy themselves. Ionians and Dorians, Syracusans and Rhegians - even the brother of Leonidas makes an appearance! Did you know that the leader of Eastern Greek Sicily wanted to lead the Greek forces at Marathon, and fought the Great Battle of Himera against Carthage in the same year as Leonidas fought Persian king Xerxes at Thermopylae?
The legacy of Magna Graecia is incredible and continued through Rome, Byzantium and the Middle Ages. One more little fact is that there is a small group of Italians today who speak 'Griko' a language some call 'Katoitaliótika': Southern Italian!

I knew they probably changed the name of Zancle to Messene because of Messene in Greece, but I didn't realize he was actually born there.
