Vercingetorix, one of Caesar's greatest foes.
Continuing on the theme of France, I thought I'd delve more into the ancient Gallic history, and no mention of Gaul can be made without mention of Vercingetorix. The son of a known rebel who happened to be Arverni chieftain and one-time rebel ruler, he rose up against the Roman invaders and united many disparate tribes to face off against arguably the greatest Roman - Julius Caesar.
After many bloody battles, some of which tested Caesar considerably, he eventually gave himself up in 52 BCE. It could be said that had things gone just a little differently, the history of Rome would have looked very different. Cassius Dio even speaks of one episode when he had the consul-general surrounded.
Vercingetorix gave himself up in order to save his fellow Gauls, and perhaps naively expected mercy, was eventually taken into custody. He was executed years later in 46 BCE during a Triumph in Rome.
His legacy is enduringly positive, and not only is he known as a hero in Auvergne, but was idolized by none other than Napoleon III himself. His statue can still be seen in Alesia, where he had surrendered.

Great video! You do have to admit it's pretty funny though that the foundational story of French national identity is about a guy who surrendered.

Could it be that his name was Vercingetto, and that when he became chieftain the title Rex/Rix was added to it? Vercingetto Rex?

His name is Cingeto, Ver was a Gallic word for king, and Caesar in his book added the suffix « Rix » to honour him.

I don't think Vercingetorix spoke in Latin.

I really wish we had more ancient Gallic perspective on it all, it’s a pain wading through Caesar’s propaganda! Have to say though, it’s still a powerful speech
