What if you want to dry fit before gluing? It's not always possible to press the pipe all the way into the fitting when dry fitting. So if you cut to the dry fit length, you'll come out with cuts that are too short when putting it all together. How do you handle these situations?
@pvctipsandtricks7682 жыл бұрын
I don’t think dry fitting all your connections is a good idea. It is too hard to know if you pushed the fitting in all the way and it’s hard to pull out. I think if you know the measurement of the fitting and the length of pipe you need between fittings it can all be figured out.
@brandanmichael69822 жыл бұрын
@@pvctipsandtricks768 Agree with you both. Dry fitting just doesn't work sometimes. You will never seat the pipe and fitting 100%. This becomes especially difficult once you start running through studs and joists.

@@brandanmichael6982 Yeah, now that I have the sprinkler valve replacement project mostly behind me, I will say that trying to pull apart dry-fitted pipes and couplings was a major pain and when cutting to the dry-fitted length, I ended up too short. Lesson learned.
@AquaTech225 Жыл бұрын
It’s a pain in the ass. More than usual I replumb pool equipment. Say if I’m connecting from a coupling to a 90 or whatever the hell else. I’ll end up just taking a short stick about the size. An lay it on the outside of each fitting. As if it were dry fitted. But holding it outside of the line itself knowing about the distance in wash it’s going to go an eyeball it. If I have to if it’s some elaborate crap. I’ll have a small bucket. Dip each pipe end an fitting. An dry fit it that way. An get the design I had in mind. Since sometimes the way that crap had to be ran from bad installs an crap. An pop it apart after. Anything stuck get a good grip on it an turn the pipe with a pipe wrench while holding onto the fitting. Or a short wooden broom stick shoved into the fitting while twisting the stick with a pipe wrench. Either way. Craps a pain n the ass. Can’t stand working with pvc. It’s definitely not copper. Need to make an adjustment sweat the fitting off an what not. There just isn’t any forgiveness

Sorry if this is a stupid question but, How do you put a 3/4 elbow on a 3/4 PVC? it's the same size, so it couldn't go over or in. Would you use a sleeve?
@pvctipsandtricks7685 жыл бұрын
3/4” pvc pipe will fit inside of 3/4” pvc fittings like the elbow you are referring to
@CitizenPerkins5 жыл бұрын
+Jason -- Think of it as *3/4" elbows* (or any 3/4" connectors) _are meant_ to work with 3/4" pipes. So, once you know what size of pipe you're dealing with -- you also know which size of _connectors_ you'll need.

Measure the stop depth inside your fitting with the end of a pencil. Transfer to your wide measuring tape. Now you don't have to spend money buying a narrower measuring tape.
@pcofranc5 жыл бұрын
Yes.... but transfering introduces errors - 1. transferring 2. opportunity to misread 3. math if a frac calc isn't used 11/32 + 21/64 + 3/8 = ?? -- Also, his method is universal and can be use with all pipes PVC, ABS, and so on. Also, for this common universal situation why not use a dedicated pipe transfter measuring device that works like a telescoping antenna & ideally has dig read out and performs frac math -- in this day in age with pocket computers (phones) why are we still using tools that the cave man used?
If you don’t have a small enough tape measure just remember this; a 3/4 inch pipe will go into a 3/4 inch fitting about 3/4 inches. A 1 inch pipe will go into a 1 inch fitting about 1 inch etc...ensure you cut the pipe ends as square as possible to make a great fit.

Hi. Thank you for the video. My problem with measuring is at 5:12 of the vid kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWariYZunbFkpLM. How did you determine a 2" gap between the fittings? This is where I'm not accurate. For example... you're measuring from a vertical pipe reference to a horizontal pipe reference to determine 2" difference. You're doing this measurement as if you KNOW both pipes are to meet there...How did you get THAT measurement? If both ends are a few feet/meters apart (horizon/vert) to connect, how did that joint location become accurate? Thanks. I'm trying to measure angles of pipe meeting at a common point from different pipe lengths/angles. Then I'm good with joining them - as you've shown. Thank you.
@pvctipsandtricks7683 жыл бұрын
I just chose that number so it would be easy to do the math. If the pipe had already been glued in the vertical position you would measure from whatever fitting was on the end of that pipe like the elbow in my example to determine how long to make that piece of pipe.
@AquaTech225 Жыл бұрын
Lil more of a pain say for above ground plumbing. That 90° isn’t just sitting there to take your measurement off of. Take that same set up but have feet apart each side of that 90° takes a couple shots to make sure ya don’t have that bind to have the right measurement

Or...just look at the specs of whatever you’re working with to get your measurements, not accurate but good enough. Or use another pipe and slip it onto the fitting and mark on pipe how deep it goes....
@rowdyradcliffe4 жыл бұрын
This is a bad idea b/c it is difficult to make the pipe bottom out in the socket of a fitting because the fittings taper a tiny bit, which makes it easy to make mistakes on the short side or, if you make sure to force the pipe to bottom out in the fitting, it can be real tough to separate them.
