Hey Jill, nice vid. Thought you might mention the importance of breaking the scapes varities before they flower and using them in the kitchen! Also garlic can push up thru a thick covering of hay like a sword, enough hay to eliminate weeds, help moisture retention, make harvest easy without digging, depending on soil.. love your place, I just installed and electric fence to keep critters out of my garden, orchard,,..gorchard

I just pulled the garlic I planted last November. According to your instructions, I places about 20 cloves about 5 inches into the soil of my 2x4 container. You said it was safe to grow through the winter. To say I am disappointed, would be correct. All I got for the six month wait are 2 foot stalks with only a root ball at the end. No garlic bulbs at all. Not even anything that looked like garlic. As this was an experiment, I never tried growing garlic before, I really can't complain too much. It would have been nice to get something. I think it may have been the planting soil. I used the soil I grew tomatoes in last year. The container had good drainage, so that wasn't a problem. What is it I failed to do?
@thebeginnersgarden3 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say, and I am sorry for your disappointment. What I have learned since I recorded this video is that when you harvest is variable based on where you live. I harvest in early June (in Arkansas), while some gardeners harvest in May (those more southern than me) and others not until later July. And, hardneck garlic takes longer to grow than softneck. My guess is that they weren't ready to harvest. I haven't found a soil garlic doesn't like, except heavy clay, but if your container had good drainage, I doubt it's that. Five inches does seem too deep, but I'm not sure that would affect the yield.

Hi Tracey, I start all of my peppers from seed indoors. They require a grow light and I also use a seedling heat mat to raise the soil temperature for germination.

Great info, Jill. Just wondering, where do you get your garlic bulbs? From a store or online?
@thebeginnersgarden7 жыл бұрын
Online. Our local garden centers don't carry seed garlic, and garlic from the grocery stores aren't certified disease-free. (I did plant it my first year in ignorance without problems, but I wouldn't chance it.) The last two years I've ordered mine from Baker Creek Heirloom seeds. Though I haven't ordered garlic directly from these places, I've ordered other plants/seeds with them: Seed Savers Exchange, Stark Bros. I'd recommend all three of these suppliers. But order soon; most of these suppliers run out quickly.

I planted 2 garlic cloves in a large pot and its been a month, but now it is dying. Is it because of over watering or bad soil?
@thebeginnersgarden3 жыл бұрын
I can't tell you for sure, but garlic doesn't like too saturation over the winter when it's not aggressively growing. I don't water mine at all in the winter; what rain we get takes care of them.

Can you explain the peppers & Garlic planting more? Is the planting the same time, location, or what?
@thebeginnersgarden3 жыл бұрын
Planting time is different because they grow in different seasons. It will also differ based on your location. In my zone 7b with average first and last frost dates of November 1 and April 1, I plant garlic in late October or early November. They grow through the winter, and I plant peppers in between the garlic rows in early May. I harvest garlic in early June, which opens up the space for the peppers to take over. For climates where you harvest garlic later than early June, this may not work as well, unless you have more space for the peppers. Early on the garlic will shade the peppers so they don't start really taking off until the garlic is harvested.

I do not have a Garden so I am going to plant them into a Giant Pot ( Bucket Type ) They should grow fine in there, Can it be left out all Winter,? Or will the Snow & freezing Weather kill the Garlic Plants, Thanks for sharing Jill.
@thebeginnersgarden6 жыл бұрын
In my area, zone 7b, I have grown them with no problem in a planter. It probably depends on your climate and zone. Freezing weather won't kill garlic, but I'm not sure how low is too low since we don't get below 0F in our area. Hardneck varieties are more suited to cold, but I'd check with your local cooperative extension service before planting, just in case.
@glitzandgratitude11704 жыл бұрын
How about in Canada? Our winter gets pretty cold can the garlic handle the winter snow and frost?
@thebeginnersgarden4 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, hardneck garlic can be grown in cold areas, as the snow provides insulation. A thick mulch is also recommended. Whether it will grow in your particular area of Canada, you may need to ask a local gardening expert to be sure.

What state are you in Jill? I'm in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Pretty sure that we are in different growing zones. This is my first year playing around with garlic, I just planted mine about 1 week ago but we aren't really supposed to start until June 1st as a rule of thumb. Is there a possibility of a harvest?
@thebeginnersgarden5 жыл бұрын
I'm in Arkansas. I can't speak from experience but from my understanding, if you just planted, you will probably have smaller heads. Garlic is typically planted in the fall for the largest heads, even in your area. But, you should still get a harvest. Whether you plant in spring or in fall, it's my understanding that in your area you wouldn't harvest until later in the summer either way. You might check out the MI Gardener youtube channel. He's from Michigan and I bet he'll have a video on growing garlic that would give you ideas for your area.

In Arkansas, I plant my cloves in late October. I recommend looking up your average first frost date in the fall and planting then. Spring planting will yield very small cloves, from what I've seen in others. The fall planting is key.

They do, yes, but since I harvest my garlic in early June, the timing is just right. If you're in an area where garlic doesn't harvest until much later, this companion planting combo may not be great for peppers.
