It's difficult to make a shrub look beautiful after such a significant pruning, but you made it look easy! Just think of how dense and full of flowers it'll be next year, and at a more manageable height like this, you'll be able to see every bloom. Anyone who's a bit intimidated by pruning for size control should watch this. Your method of cutting a little, then stepping back to assess from all angles before pruning some more is so helpful to those who wouldn't know where to begin.

Ah, thank you Mary. I've been having a great time in the woodland area today, now that I can actually get in there. It's rained all day and I was soaking wet but I've had a lovely day. Hope you're having a lovely weekend. Diane x

You did a great job pruning that weigela Diane. I’m sure it will make a huge difference to your lovely woodland area. I’m sorry now that I let my husband talk me into digging ours out. He seems to prefer plants that don’t get any more than 2 feet high but as he doesn’t garden he doesn’t usually have a say in the matter! Enjoy your weekend xx

Hi Jennifer. Yes, my husband is the same in that he has no interest whatsoever in the garden. He can appreciate its beauty and likes to sit in it on an evening but, luckily, it's entirely my domain. Just the way I like it 😁. Hope you're having a lovely weekend. Diane x

Its really opened up the space makes you want to explore further into the garden now, good job. For me personally I think we are so set in our ways, routines and just the idea of this is how it is. Sometimes we don't see the opportunities and the adventures right under our nose. Thanks for sharing Diane, it has given the garden new depth. 🐞🌻🌱

I must get on and cut my Weigela back as it's grown too tall. You've done a good job on yours Diane and explained the process really well. I had a beautiful one called Wine and Roses but I lost it last year. I asked at the garden centre last week as I would like to have another one and the man pronounced it Why Ghee La which I'd never heard of before. I think I should've looked in the Spring as the garden centre only had one or two and they weren't what I wanted. Hope your daughter's move went smoothly. I vowed never to move again but I'm looking for a bungalow now. They're in short supply which amazes me as we have an ageing population and a lot of people will be thinking ahead like me in case stairs become a problem in the future. I'm sure that something will turn up when I'm least expecting it. Have a lovely weekend in the beautiful sunshine. xxx

Hi Wendy. That Weigela sounds lovely. I'll keep a look out for you and let you know if I find it online. Yes, Jess is all settled in her new home thank you. And it just happens to be a bungalow! Monty loves the fact that he can now just wander out into a garden and has some lovely grass to lie on. I do hope you have fun looking for a bungalow and find the perfect one. Diane x

Hi Diane 👋. So educational!! A great teacher. I have two Wygelia’s but they are itty-bitty things. I hope they grow fast. Another enjoyable video.

Hi Susie. Lovely to hear from you. My sister Shirley told me years ago that, in her experience, shrubs don't do much for two years after you plant them and then they start to grow. But then after five years something amazing happens and they just take off. It's not until I look back over the last fifteen years in this garden that I realise she was exactly right! So enjoy them for five years then watch them like a hawk 😁. Diane x

Very informative vid! You know, Wegelia (sp?) is such a lovely plant. We had one when I was young, and when I bought my house 17 yrs ago, first thing I did was go to the garden centre and buy one! Brilliant, educational, overall a really good vid. 😍🇬🇧😍

Hi Tracey. Thank you. You'll never guess what I have! A very tame little robin that follows me around the garden and lives in the hedge on our drive. When I pull up in the car he sits on the gate until I walk through and then follows me to the door. I can't believe how tame he is. I trimmed the hedge yesterday and he sat watching me for hours. I love him!

Weigela is one of those plants I can never seem to pronounce!
@thedown-to-earthgardener5 ай бұрын
I know! I'm always tempted to put the extra 'I' in. But I thought I had better pronounce it the way the RHS spell it. We are not alone 😀.

@@thedown-to-earthgardener I find horticultural latin really interesting as I love languages, but some of them names are real tongue twisters!
