Hello, great video thank you! How would you treat a suspicious looking blackened area on a vanda stem (about half way up the length of my vanda). I have been spraying daily with 3% hydrogen peroxide and then drying it under a fan. But, would you recommend applying cinnamon powder to the area instead, or should I just continue doing what I'm doing? Thanks!

Hello, that sounds like southern blight..very contagious and I would highly recommend discarding the plant immediately. Pls look it up and compare your plant versus pictures. Thanks

Thank you so much for this video. I just received my first three vandas, so I am actively reading and watching as much as possible on their care. Your videos are the best, and what makes it better, I am also in Florida, so we can relate on climate and health care of the plant. Thanks again!

Can the lower removed part of the stem be saved or used to produce keikis?
@mainlyvandas214
@mainlyvandas214 4 жыл бұрын
It can be saved and will more.than likely produce keikis. However, if there is fusarium present, it needs to be thrown away immediately! Check for any signs of a deep purple color.

@@mainlyvandas214 Great, Thank you! Great content btw. Can this same approach/method be used on Aerides? (odorata if it matters)..also, what do you like to use to get rid of ants on vanda spikes/buds? Orthene? or is that just good for thrips, but not ants?

Thanks! Informative videos! New homeowner in Palm Beach County with a shady back yard and a whole lot of failed attempts at getting some colorful, fragrant plants growing back there. I'm planning on growing vandas in my palm trees. Any species recommendations/tips for a beginner vanda grower out here in South FL?
@mainlyvandas214
@mainlyvandas214 5 жыл бұрын
South Florida is a paradise to grow outdoors! If you dont mind watering every day, then vandas will attach themselves nicely on trees. Or for that matter any orchid to be honest. Except for paphs from what i hear. Encyclias, cattleyas, dendrobium and vandas and your go to plants! I suggest you join Florida Orchid Growing on facebook if you can.

Thiomyl is effective at killing any fusarium that is in a plant (it cannot correct damaged tissue but prevents it from spreading further), but the plant must have active roots for it to work. You can also use wood glue to seal cuts, I prefer it to cinnamon because it is way less messy.🙂 What do you do if you have a Vanda with a massive root system at the base, then a foot of bare stem, then a foot of leaves? In two years the plant has made no effort to grow new roots further up the stem but the older roots are still plump and actively growing (it is mounted to an oak tree). I keep hoping it will keiki but doesn't seem to want to do anything in the bare area.
@mainlyvandas214
@mainlyvandas214 5 жыл бұрын
Thyomil is a staple in our fungicide regiment for sure. And yes it will help.with prevention of fusarium. Never tried wood glue! Maybe next time. Unfortunately some vandas just dont keiki from what I have seen or they aren't getting a combo.of everything they desire..they can be picky little buggers. I have heard of people.using keiki paste, i never have however. Have you considered using a seaweed based fertilizer to promote root.growth? I prefer maxicrop. Inexpensive and have good results. Something extra to add to your selection of ferts possibly.

@@mainlyvandas214 I added seaweed about 4 months ago, everybody gets it every other week. I have to wonder if the Vanda being attached to the oak isn't why those old roots are still growing and if they are stopping new roots from growing further up the plant. The roots are over 10 feet long and literally encircle the entire branch.

hello i have only one question, on these massive root cuts is there any chance that a new keiki will come out ? cheers from Jochen Stuttgart Germany
@mainlyvandas214
@mainlyvandas214 5 жыл бұрын
Yes there is, as long as there is a place for a keiki to emerge. If the plant has not spiked from every axil, then there is a chance. I saved the cuttings and put them along my back fence on the ground just in case...hope that helps!
