Letterman was a wrestling fan. He regularly went to pro wrestling shows in his hometown of Indianapolis. In fact his first house band was called the "world's most dangerous band". I always contend that Kaufman wasn't a standup comedian. Kaufman was a performance artist. A comedian tries to get their audience to laugh. A performance artist tries to get a specific reaction from the audience. Laughter, anger, disgust, or whatever, as long as the audience reacts in the way the artist wants. In wrestling, he found a venue where he could get 8,000-10,000 people to be absolutely incensed (to react the way he wanted them to react) at him on a weekly basis.

First, congrats on winning the giveaway. Secondly, that is a great point. I really think you hit it on the head. He always knew what kind of reaction he wanted, and if he got it, he was probably satisfied that he did his job. I think many wrestlers, by nature of their job, fall into this category.

@maxdecphoenix
@maxdecphoenix Жыл бұрын
@@chriskay1449 while that's true for Dave, many promoters in wrestling resented their appearance because the NBC executives, who even though they hated wrestling would still allow the occasional appearance to promote a fight or event, were mortified by the situation and essentially black-balled any appearances from anyone involved in wrestling pretty much until the mid 90s when it got so hot with the NWo finally caved because they wanted some of that action. Hence the involvement between Hulk/Leno trying to replicate Kaufman/Lawler magic. Cornette talks about it in the Andy Kaufman deep dive, that many promoters who had developed good relationships with NBC got shut-out and lost that promotion avenue. And they didn't let Lawler and memphis forget it.
@chriskay1449
@chriskay1449 Жыл бұрын
@@maxdecphoenix One NBC executive would view wrestling differently and that was Dick Ebersol. He would not only bring wrestling to NBC with "Saturday Nights Main Event" as a periodic replacement of SNL rereuns, he would also get WWF onto prime time, "The4 Main Event" which got massive ratings with the famous "Mega Powers Exploode" angle, and Hulk Hogan's contraversial title loss to Andre. Those NBC executives sure as hell weren't mortified about those ratings. As for Andy, he was already beginning to ruin his career before the wrestling stuff with all his antics that he was pulling on SNL and the set of Taxi. His career was dying even without wrestling.

Andy Kaufman was the best celebrity to put a mainstream spotlight on wrestling.

He definitely created Sports Entertainment, because if McMahon knows one thing, it's to steal others ideas and make them his own.

There are two celebrities that I think deserve to be in the wwe hall of fame celebrity wing. One is Cindy Lauper and the other is Andy Kaufman.

As a comedian, Andy Kaufman was in his own catagory. Jim Carrey did an absolute great job impersonating Kaufman in the biopic Man On The Moon. Kaufman's legendary appearance on Letterman with Jerry Lawler definitely blurred the line between reality & kayfabe.

I became friends with Anna Kaufman when I tried to be a stand up comedian. He was truly phenomenal as a talent and his time in wrestling gave me a very deep respect for pro wrestlers. I could give you road stories but I firmly believe he belongs in the HOF @

I don't have the artistic vision Andy did, but I still always related to him. Good or bad I just love making people react. So when I first heard of him(thank you man on the moon) I was mind blown somebody could be so bold. I've learned a lot from and being a lifelong wrestling fan, I was amazed when I learned about his connection to wrestling. I would have love to have seen the type of things he would have done as his career progressed. Thanks Andy! Thank you for the video WWW!

Fuck, Brian. Thank you so much for this. -- I love both Lawler and Kaufman so much, but the details of this fued are surprisingly hard to look into if you don't know where to start. I seriously appreciate you taking a whole episode to compress it all into something consumable. Now I can branch off into the sources and appreciate it even more. Great show, dude!

At one time, in the long ago on KZbin, somebody had put together a pretty good compilation piece. Kauffman started this in his act, and promoted the Inter Gender Champion bit on every interview on every outlet for about a year before ever getting on WWF for what was a basically a "feel out" mission. Kauffman promoted him and Lawler on all his interviews he did with regular media (to great frustration of the interviewers, that had no time for that nonsense). All the interviews and promos and angles and matches were on that video, in chronological order as for as I could tell. Not sure if it's still here, this was a long time ago.
